Abstract:TheAcademicSharingCommunity:ASUNYCatalogofEducationalProjectsandInnovativeInitiatives(ASCSUNY)servesasarepositoryforcampusinitiatives,whileprovidingguidanceforprojectdevelopmentandassessmentandwaystonetworkandpartneracrossSUNYtohelpinstitutionsmeetdemandsofthe21stcentury.ThroughapartnershipwithSUNYEmpireStateCollege,SUNYOswego,SUNYGeneseeCommunityCollege,SUNYRocklandCommunityCollege,andSUNY’sCenterforProfessionalDevelopment,thisprojectwillcreate:1)aweb-basedportaltohouseASCSUNYwithsinglesign-onaccessacrossallcampusconstituents;2)strategicpromptsthatassistcampusestoconnectinitiatives,resourcesandtoolswhendevelopingprojects;3)asearchablerepositoryofSUNY-wideteachingandlearninginitiatives,resourcesandtoolsforcampusestoresearchsimilarprojects,outcomesandlessonslearned;and4)acultureandnetworktoshareideas,processes,andresourcesandtools,andpartnershipsforprojectsacrossSUNYcampuses.

ProjectNarrative

Highereducationisunderextremepressuretobemoreresponsivetoanevolvingeconomiclandscapebypreparingstudentstobemorereadilyemployable,whileprovidingeducationatlowercostsandinlesstime.Inaddition,institutionsarefacedwithtighterbudgetsandlowerenrollmentsandincreasedneedformoreprogramming,studentsupportsandintegratedtechnologies.Access,retention,andcompletionarekeyprioritiesatanyinstitution,andarecornerstonesoftheSUNYEXCELperformanceframeworkforitscampuses.Inresponse,highereducationisrepletewithpresumedsolutions,eachclaimingtobethenextbestdirection,innovation,tool,technologyorresourcethatwillhelpaddresschallengesfacedbylearners,faculty,andemployers.Thelandscapeisbecomingconfusedwithsomanypossibilitiesandunclearoutcomesofhowthesepracticestrulyimpactthequalityofpost-secondaryeducationandsupportstudentsuccess.

AcrossSUNY,therearecountlesspocketsofinnovation.ManyprojectsevolvedthroughIITGandothergrants.Somearegeneratedfromstudentsuccessprograms.Othersprogressedthroughindustryandprofessionalpartnershipsandlocaleconomicneeds.Theseaccomplishmentsandlessonslearnedarehiddengemsacrossthesystemandarerarelyorganizedandsharedinwaysthatcanplanfullyanddeliberatelyimpactothercampuses’processesandofferings.Thechallengesforcampusesinclude:howtolearnabouteachother’swork;howtodecipherwhen,how,andwhyasingleorcombinationofapproachescanbeeffective;howtoimplementsuchanapproach;andhowtoreflecton,demonstrate,andmeasureitseffectiveness.

Solution:DevelopaSUNY-wide,web-basedinteractiveacademicsharingcommunitywithacatalogofeducationalprojectsandinnovativeinitiatives.Theweb-basedportalwill:1)promoteacultureofstrategicdesignofcurriculum,assessment,academicandstudentsupportservices,andappliedlearningthroughstrategicpromptsthathelpshapethedesignandimplementationofinitiatives;2)providearepositoryofdifferentteachingandlearninginitiatives,resourcesandtools;and3)encouragepeer-to-peernetworkingandpartnershipsacrossSUNYcampuses.Inaddition,thesitewilllinktoSUNYpoliciesandprocedures,internalandexternalgrants,andotheropportunitiesforprogramdevelopmentandexpansion.TheAcademicSharingCommunity:ASUNYCatalogofEducationalProjectsandInnovativeInitiatives(ASCSUNY)wouldbeakeysolutiontosupportanddemonstratethereachoftheSUNYEXCELperformanceframework.

2017IITGPlanningGrant:Thispastyear,a$10KIITGplanninggrantwasusedtodeveloptheconceptsofASCSUNY(pronounced“askSUNY”).Aspartoftheplanningprocess,datawerecollectedfrompastIITGprojects,FACT2projectwebsite,aliteraturereviewconductedbytheTransformingHigherEducationFACT2team,andotherexternalsourcesfocusedonchangeandinnovationinhighereducation.Fromthesesources,over125innovationsandpracticeswithin16themeswereidentified.Inaddition,acampussurveywasdevelopedtocollectmoreinformationaboutcurrentandpastinitiatives.Thethemesandinnovationtopicswillbeusedtocreateataxonomyfortaggingprojectsintheportal,andtheIITGprojectdataandthecampussurveyresultswillbeusedtopopulatetheASCSUNYcatalog.AdditionaldataisplannedtobecollectedonthePerformanceImprovementFund(PIF)projectsacrossSUNY.

The2017IITGplanningteam,consistingofNanTravers(EmpireStateCollege),MicheleForte(EmpireStateCollege),KathleenSchiefen(GeneseeCommunityCollege),JillPippin(SUNYOswego),SusanDeer(RocklandCommunityCollege),LisaRaposo(CenterforProfessionalDevelopment),andChrisPrice(CenterforProfessionalDevelopment),metthroughoutthe2017fundingperiodandhasdevelopedapreliminaryplanforfeaturesofASCSUNY.Thereport(forthcoming)addressesareasof:projectdescriptionandpurpose,audience,featuresandcontent,landingpageandnavigation,developmentandmaintenance,andassessment.

AlthoughASCSUNYwillcontainacatalogofSUNY-wideprojects,itismorethanjustarepository.Itwillalsoprovidestrategicprogramdesignpromptsusingestablishedstandardsfromthefield(e.g.,QualityMatters,TenSharedDesignElementsofaCompetency-BasedProgram,andConnectingCredentialsFramework)thatwillhelpindividualsandinstitutionsgleanpertinentinformationfromthecatalogandformulatetheiruniqueapplication.Thenetworkingsidewillprovidehighlightsofrelatedprojects,withcontactinformationtolearnmoreaboutand/orformpartnershipsacrossSUNYcampuses.ASCSUNYwillalsoprovideguidanceoninformedstrategiesforsuccessfulprogramassessmentandimprovement.In

addition,PatriceTorciviaissubmittingaproposaltouseSenseMaker®toreviewandanalyzetheIITGprojects.Theresultswillbesharedonthesitetohelpotherslearnmoreaboutprojectoutcomesandhowtoincorporategoodresultsintotheirownprojects.

2019-Tier3–ImplementationandEvaluationofMicro-CredentialsonthePharmacists'PatientCareProcessinPharmacyandPharmacyTechnicianPrograms:PromotingPatient-CenteredCareCampus:Buffalo(UB) PI:RobertWahler

Abstract:AccreditationstandardsforbothDoctorofPharmacy(PharmD)andPharmacyTechnician(PharmTech)educationincludeincorporatingthePharmacists’PatientCareProcess(PPCP).A2018IITGprojectdevelopedcontentformicro-credentialsonthePPCPthroughacollaborationoftheUniversityatBuffaloandBinghamtonUniversityPharmDprogramsandtheSUNYEriePharmTechprogram.Theobjectiveofthe2018IITGprojectofdevelopingflexible,stackablemodulestoenhanceteachingandlearningwithcontentrelevantfordiverseinstitutionswasachieved.ThisproposalwillimplementthePPCPmicro-credentials,includingdevelopmentofaneffort-reducingelectronicsubmissionframeworktosustaintheuseofmicro-credentials.Theinnovation’sabilitytolarger-scalePPCPeducationwillbeevaluatedthroughoutthisproject(contentknowledge,valueandappropriatenessofassessments,time/easeofcompletion,andusabilityoftheelectronicsubmissionframework,facultyloadreduction).Assessmentresultswillbeusedtofurtherdevelopcontentwithcontinuedcollaborationbytheprogramsinvolved.

Toimplementmicro-credentialsonthePharmacists’PatientCareProcessthatweredevelopedwithpreviousIITGfunding.Themicro-credentialswillbeimplementedwithfaculty,staff,andhealthcareprovidersaspartofthecontinuingprofessionaldevelopmentmicro-credential;intheDoctorofPharmacyprogramsattheUniversityatBuffaloandBinghamtonUniversity;andinthePharmacyTechnicianprogramatSUNYErie.

Toeffectivelyimplementthemicro-credentials,asustainableinfrastructurewillbeestablishedateachcampus,whichwillincludesoftwaretoissuebadgesandmicro-credentials(notcurrentlyavailableatallcampuses),anddevelopmentofanelectronicsubmissionframeworktoreducethestaffeffortneededinthefuture.

Theevaluationwillincludeprocess(numberofcompletions,timetocompletion),quantitative(survey,assessmentperformance),andqualitative(open-endedfeedbackresponses)datafromusersaffiliatedwithallthreeprograms.

Goal3:

Tocontinuedevelopmentofthemicro-credentialsonthePharmacists’PatientCareProcess.Theinitialroundoffundingwasusedtodevelopthecorelearningcontent(video,readings,basicassessment);however,theresourcesdidnotallowforallcontentdesired.

Thecontentandassessmentwillbeimprovedbasedonadditionalcontentdesiredbydevelopersandresultsfromtheevaluationsthatwillbeconductedthroughouttheimplementationphase(seesecondprojectobjective).Thiswillincludeproducingadditionalvideocontenttobeusedinthelearningmodulesandforassessmentofcontentknowledge.

CommunicationPlanismostlyCITandPharmcircles(annualmeetingandjournals).Again,therearesomevaluableframeworksproposedherethatarenotdisciplinespecific(electronicmicro-credentials,badging,submissionandtrackingacrosscampuseswithstudentsandfacultyalike;alsowhetherthisdoesimproveincreasedcompetence,andaccesstolearning).;Good,butIwouldliketoseemoreeffortsatcommunicationacrossSUNY.PresentingatCITseemsliketheminimumforthesesortofprojects.Thereareplentyofopportunitiestotalkaboutmicrocredentialsatotherevents.

BackgroundPublicperceptionofapharmacistisoftenlimitedtoanexperienceinabusycommunitypharmacywherecontactwithapharmacistisinadequate.ThisdatedpracticemodelhasundergonechangeduetoTheJointCommissionofPharmacyPractitioners(JCPP),aworkinggroupof11nationalpharmacyorganizations,releaseofthePharmacists’PatientCareProcess(PPCP)in2014.ThePPCPoutlinesastandardized,evidence-basedprocessemphasizingapatient-centeredapproachtocareincollaborationwithotherprofessionalsonthehealthcareteam.TheAmericanCouncilofPharmaceuticalEducation(ACPE)accreditsDoctorofPharmacy(PharmD)programsandPharmacyTechnician(PharmTech)Programs.TheACPE2016StandardsrequirethatthePPCPbeembeddedintoPharmDcoursesandexperiencesandthatPharmTechstudentsexplainthePPCP,thetechnician’sroleinit,andbeabletoassistinitsimplementation.A2018Tier2IITGtitled“DevelopmentofaMicro-CredentialontheNewlyDevelopedPharmacists’PatientCareProcessforUseinPharmacyandHealthProfessionPrograms:PromotingPatient-CenteredCare”wasfundedtocreatethestackablecontentformicro-credentialsonthePPCPthroughacollaborationofthePharmDprogramsoftheUniversityatBuffalo(UB)andBinghamtonUniversity(BU),andthePharmTechprogramofSUNYErieCommunityCollege(SUNY-Erie).Wehaveadheredtothescheduleandbudgetoftheinitialgrant.Thecontentforthemoduleswasdevelopedwithinputfromthethreeprogramsinvolved,PharmDstudentsfromtheUBScholarsprogram,theUBCenterforEducationalInnovation,andtheUBOfficeofMicro-Credentials.Videoproductionandeditinghasbeenscheduledandassessmentsforeachmodulehavebeenestablished.Usingthestackablemodules,twoproposalsweresubmittedtotheUBOfficeofMicro-Credentials;oneforaprofessionaldevelopment(PD)micro-credentialforprogramstaff/faculty/affiliates,andtheotherforaPharmDstudentmicro-credentialwhichincludesthreerequiredbadgesandtwoelectivebadgesbasedonthestudent’sspecialization(FirstProjectObjective).Apresentationproposalwasacceptedforthe2019SUNYConferenceonInstructionandTechnologyandwesubmittedaproposaltothe2019AmericanAssociationofCollegesofPharmacy(AACP)Annualmeetingtopresentdataontheprocessusedtocreatethemodules,includingthelearningachievedbyScholarsstudentswhoparticipated(SecondProjectObjective).Duringthesummerof2019,weplantoexaminedatafromapilotgroupofstakeholdersthatcompletethebadges(ThirdProjectObjective).ProjectInnovationSignificanteffortshaveachievedthe2018projectgoalsofdevelopingstackablemodulesthatenhanceteachingandlearningwithenoughflexibilitythatthecontentisrelevantfordiverseinstitutions.OurproposedprojectseekstoscaletheinnovationofthePPCPmicro-credentialsatSUNYbeyondcampusboundaries.AtcapacitythePharmDprogramatUBenrolls500andatBU390(BUreceivedPharmDaccreditationstatusin2017andenrolledthefirstcohortofstudents),andthePharmTechprogramatSUNY-Erieisatrainingprogram

thatenrollsapproximately80studentsperyear.Inaddition,therearehealthscienceprogramsandhealthcaremembersthatseekprofessionaldevelopmentthroughSUNY.Theprojectwillcreatepublicitytoencouragestudentsandindividualsassociatedwiththeseprogramstoenrollinthemicro-credential.Withinthegrantperiod,UBwillimplementboththePDandPharmDstudentmicro-credentials;BUwillimplementthePDmicro-credentialandpilotcontentfromforthePharmDstudentmoduleswithfullmicro-credentialinginsubsequentyears(duetotheyoungschool’sdevelopingcurriculum);andSUNYEriewillimplementamicro-credentialwithatleastonecohortofstudents.ThecontentwillbeavailablethroughOpenSUNYtoextendtootherlearningenvironments.

principalalsoappliestothesocialsciences(McCarthyandAnderson,2000).Thecreationofanactivelearningenvironment,combinedwithinteractivecontent,increasesengagementinbothteachingandlearning.Itencouragesstudentstoutilizehigher-ordercriticalthinkingandincreasestheirinterestinthematerial.Anactivelearningenvironmentalsocanimprovestudentgradesandpostsecondaryinstitutionretentionrates.Ourproposalrequestsresourcestopurchasea911Simulatortointegrateintoanactivelearningenvironmentthatalsofeatures360andgoprocamerastosimulatecrimescenarios.LocalcriminaljusticeagenciesandtheNYSDepartmentofHomelandSecurityandEmergencyServiceshaveexpressedtheneedfortrainingopportunitiesforprospectiveandcurrentemergencytelecommunicators(seeLettersofSupport).Allemergencytelecommunicationpersonnelarerequiredtocompleteabasictelecommunicatorcoursewithintwelvemonthsofbeinghired,coveringtopicswhichmayincludelegalaspects,technologies,callclassification,stressmanagement,andtheincidentcommandsystem.OurJusticeTechnologyCenterwillofferamicro-credentialingframeworkviaastate-of-the-art911simulatorwhichwillbecombinedwithaNewYorkStateandanationallyapprovedemergencycommunicatorcurriculum.ThiscombinationwillenablestudentstoreceivenumeroustransferrablecertificationsbeneficialtoanyonepursuingemergencytelecommunicationscareerswithinNewYorkandthroughoutthenation.Studentswhomastervarioustechnologieswithintheclassroomwillearnastackablemicro-credentialingcertification.Studentspresentingthiscertificationasevidenceofemployabilityskillswillhaveadistinctadvantageoveruncertificatedapplicants.Themicro-credentialingprocesswillprovidemultipleoptionstothestudents.ThebasicemergencycommunicationscoursewillprovidestudentswithNYScertificationforthebasictelecommunicatorcourserequiredbycurrent9-1-1standards.StudentsalsocanreceiveIncidentCommandSystems(ICS)certificationsinexistingHomelandSecuritycourses.Anadvancedemergencycommunicationscoursewillprovideadditionalcertifications,includingsuicideintervention,crisisinterventionand/oractiveshootingtraining.ThelearningenvironmentintheJusticeTechnologyCenterwillofferstudentswithmultiplecertificationoptions:completingoneormoreofthebasiccertificationcoursesearning“badges;”combiningearned“badges”withadditionalcriminaljusticecoursestopursueaCriminalJusticeCertificate;orcontinuingwithadditionalgeneraleducationcoursestoreceiveanA.A.S.degreeinCriminalJustice.Stackablemicro-credentialingalsowillprovideanopportunityforcurrentlyemployedemergencytelecommunicatorswhoworkinregionallawenforcementdepartments.Employeeswhoalreadypossesstheirbasiccertificationsinemergencytelecommunicationscan

earncollegecreditforpriorlearning.StudentscanapplythesepriorlearningcreditsinpursuitofaCertificateoranA.A.S.inCriminalJustice.Providingcurrentlyemployedindividualswithaneducationalpathway,withoutcommittingtoafull-timeprogram,willincreaseenrollmentandretentioninGCCCriminalJusticecourses.ThevisionfortheJusticeTechnologyCenteristoprovideacollaborativelearningenvironmentwherestudentsarefullyengagedinactivelearning.Toachievethisvision,theprojectwillbecompletedinmultiplephases(reflectedintheaccompanyingtimeline).TheinitialphasewillbeginovertheSummerof2019.Duringthistimeperiod,remodelingofanexistingclassroomwillbecompletedtoprovideadequateinfrastructureforfuturetechnology.IntheFallof2019,collaborativelearningtableswithpreviouslypurchasedtechnology,includinga360OSCRCamera,twoGoProCamerasandeditingsoftware,willbeintegratedintotheroom.Studentswillusethisinteractivetechnologyincollaborativeandinteractiveassignmentsasawaytoaccomplishspecificcourselearningobjectives.Toenhanceinteractivelearning,fundingfromthisgrantwillbeusedtopurchaseadditionalinteractivetechnology,specificallya911simulator,featuringrealisticengagementscenarios.OurinitialfundingwillbeutilizedtobeginpurchasingtechnologyfortheJusticeTechnologyCenter.Asneedsemergeinthecriminaljusticefield,similarmicro-credentialingwillbedevelopedwithadditionalpurchasesoftechnology.TheJusticeTechnologyCenterwillfosterinternalpartnershipswiththeCollege’sRuralPoliceAcademyandPublicSafetyOffice.GCCalsoenvisionsscalinguptheprojectwithincreasedpartnershipsbetweenGCC,lawenforcementagenciesandeducationprovidersintheFingerLakesRegionaswellascollaboratingwithadditionalSUNYinstitutionsaroundthestate.Thelong-termgoalfortheJusticeTechnologyCenterisforittobecomeaprototypeforcriminaljusticeprogramsthroughoutthestateandpossiblythenation.Thismodelalsocouldbeintegratedintoothersocialscienceprogramsthathaveinteractivelearningpedagogies.GCC’sFACT2representativewilldisseminateallmaterialsthroughtheSUNYWorkplace,includingthevisionanddevelopmentprocess,allinteractivecurriculum,materialsandprojectoutcomes,modelingourinnovativeconcepttootherSUNYinstitutions.Moreover,theGCCfacultyandlawenforcementpartnerswillshareallimplementationandplanningprocesses,interactivecurriculum,materialsandprojectoutcomesatnumerousconferencesacrossthestate.AsrequiredbytheIITGrant,theprojectwillbesharedattheCITConferenceatSUNYPurchase.TheCriminalJusticeprofessorswillsubmitaproposaltopresentattheannualCriminalJusticeEducators’AssociationofNewYorkStateconferenceandourpartneringSheriff’sDepartmentwillpresentattheNewYorkState911Coordinators’AssociationBiannualConference.

ParttwoofthisprojectistodesignandimplementtheresearchmeasuringtheimpactofCBEonSTEMlearningforallstudents,aswellasasubsetofstudentswhoself-identifyashavinga

cognitiveimpairment.Theresearchwouldincludekeyfactorsthatfacilitatelearningamongthispopulationofstudents,suchasbestpractices.Theinvestigativeteamsuggeststhatstudentswithcognitive-basedlearningdisabilitiesareabletolearnprocess-orientedskillsthroughaprocessofinstructionthatinvolves(Jones,Wilson&Bhojwani,1997):

Abstract:Thehistoricalconnectionbetweenmusicandtechnologyrepresentsacrossroadsofcreativity,innovationandentrepreneurship.Recently,collaborativespacessuchasMakerspacesandFablabshavegainedpopularitybyprovidingthetoolsandspacesthatfacilitatethisconnection.Thisprojectaimstocreatealearningspaceinwhichstudentscancollaborativelydesignandconstructnovelelectronicinstruments,effectsandsoundprocessors.ThroughapartnershipbetweentheMusicandPhysicsDepartments,studentsfrombothdisciplineswillbenefitfromcomplementaryskillsetsandgainvaluableexperiencethatishighlysoughtafterinthejobmarket.Theprojectwillallowstudentstobringaninnovativeideafromconcepttoaworkableproductthatcanbetested,analyzed,improvedandpotentiallymarketed.Itwillencouragefurtherresearchinthisgrowingfieldandpromotecollaborationbetweenthehumanitiesandsciences,introducingnewpedagogicalpracticesandprovidingstudentswithvaluableexperienceintheirliberalartseducation.

ProjectNarrative

Musiciansarealwaysseekingnewandinnovativewaystoperformandrecordtheirmusic.InstrumentssuchastheAnalogSynthesizerandothermusicaleffectshavecreateduniquesoundsfordecadesthroughtheuseofspeciallydesignedelectroniccircuits.GenressuchasRock,Rap/Hip-HopandElectronicDanceMusic(EDM),amongothers,consistentlyrelyonsynthesizersandmusicaleffectssuchasdelays,distortionandothermodulatedsoundstocreateuniquesoundscapes.Thishasledtoarecentresurgenceofsmallcompaniescreatingmusicaldevicesforarapidlygrowingmarket.Infact,accordingtoarecentNationalAssociationofMusicMerchants(NAMM)report,therehasbeennearlya20%growthinanalogsynthesizersalesoverthepastseveralyears(1).Therecent2019NAMMConvention,whichbroughttogetherover115,000industryprofessionalsandover2,000musicmerchandisecompanies,indicatesthecontinuedstrengthoftheindustry.The2019conferenceofferedoptionssuchasA3E(AdvancedAudio+ApplicationsExchange),andtalkssuchas“InnovationsinModularSynthesis”(2,3)and“AdvancementsinRapidPrototyping”whichdiscussedcuttingedgepracticesonquicklyturningideasintoworkableproducts(4).

Infall2018,PIFauxandCo-PIVitale,fromthePhysics&AstronomyandMusicDepartments,respectively,co-taughtaclassthatcombinedaMusiccourse(IntroductiontoMusicalCircuits)andaPhysicsCourse(Electronics/CircuitsI).Theconceptwastoteachstudentsthefundamentalsofelectronicsandelectricalcircuits,withafocusonmusicalapplications.Thecoursefeaturedaprojectwherestudentsbrainstormedideasanddesignedandbuiltdevicessuchassynthesizersandguitareffectsprocessors,culminatinginapresentationtotheclass.Althoughtheprojectswerefunctional,theywerenotpermanentlyconstructed,astheywerebuiltonsolderless‘breadboards’.

Theuniquefall2018experimentofteachingacombinedPhysics/Musicclasstoanintegratedpopulationofstudentsfromseeminglydistinctdisciplinesprovedtobeagreatsuccess.Bothphysicsandmusicstudentsdemonstrablygainedskillsandknowledgethatwillinevitablycontributetotheiremployabilityandeventualsuccess,whetherinengineering,soundengineering,musicstudiowork,orothercreativeendeavors.Studentsintheclassdesignedandbuiltworkingbreadboardprototypesofsynthesizers,equalizers,effectpedals,andlightdisplaysthatwereimpressive.However,attheendofthesemester,thesedeviceshadtobedismantledbecausetheywerenotsolderedorhard-wiredontopermanentprintedcircuit

boards,norweretheseengineeredintomarketablepackages.Clearly,ifstudentsmayrealizethecrucialfinalstepstorealizingtheirvisionsaspermanentdevices,greatvaluewillaccruetotheeducationweprovide.Thisproposalaimstoallowstudentstoturnideasintopermanentdevicesthatcanbeshowcasedandused;theskillsandknowledgeattainedintheclasswilltranscendtheabstract,therebypowerfullyreinforcingthetangibleutilityoftheireducation.

SUNYChancellorDr.KristinaJohnsonincludedInnovationandEntrepreneurshipasthefirstoffourcentralthemesinhervisonfortheSUNYsystem.Thisprojectintegratesbothinnovationandentrepreneurshipascentralaspectsbyfacilitatingstudents’enhancedabilitytobeinnovative.Allowingstudentstocreatedevicesthatcanbeusedandmarketedprovidestheopportunityforthemtousetheircreativitytofosterinnovation.AlongertermgoalistousetheinfrastructureacquiredthroughtheIITGprogramtocollaboratewithourSchoolofBusiness&Economics(expandingthecollaborationtothreeofourfourschools),towardsatrulyinnovativeentrepreneurialprogramonourcampus.

IITGProjectGoalsandImplementation

ThegoalofthisTier1IITGprojectisto,first,establishaformalcollaborationbetweentheSUNYOneontaPhysics&AstronomyDepartment(includingthe3/2Engineeringprogram)andtheMusicDepartmentthroughthecreationofasmall,butcompleterapidprototypinganddesignlaboratory.Thiswouldallowstudentsfrommultipledisciplines(including~100audioartsminors,~75physicsmajors,and~503/2engineeringstudents)todigitallycreateacircuitboarddesignandquicklyfabricateit,leadingtofurthertesting,developmentandmarketing,andtopotentialindependentstudentresearchprojects.TheheartofthisprototypinglabisthePrintedCircuitBoard(PCB)MillingMachine.AComputerNumericalControl(CNC)millingmachineconvertsasetofprogrammedinstructionsintomovementsonathree-dimensionalaxis.Thisissimilartothewaya3Dprinterworks,althoughthemillingprocessissubtractiveratherthanadditive.BlankcopperboardscanbeloadedintothemachineandaPCBthatisdesignedinsoftwarecanbeetchedoutoftheboard.Thisleavesacircuitboardthatcanbepopulatedwithelectroniccomponentsandusedindefinitely.Thismachineprovidesavitalelementtotheproject,inthatitallowstheoncefragilebreadboardedcircuittoleavethelabandenterthestudiowheretheycanbeusedasapermanent,useabledevice.

OncethePCBiscreated,thecircuitisnowrobustanddurable,butstillrequiressometypeofenclosuretomakeitafinalproduct.Enclosuresprovideprotectionforthecircuitandanaestheticallypleasinginterfacefortheuser.Theycanbefabricatedusingsimplemetalworkingtools.Ideasforprojectswillbegeneratedcollaboratively,witheachstudentgivinginputfromtheirrespectivediscipline.UseofthelabwillbeincorporatedintothecurriculumoftheexistingElectronicCircuitscourse(CircuitsI&II),aswellastheMusicalCircuitscurriculum.OpportunitiesforfurthercollaborationexistinMUSC227and327:StudioAssistantcourses.ThesecoursesfocusontopicsrelatedtotheoperationoftherecordingstudioslocatedwithintheSUNYOneontaMusicDepartment.StudentsfromboththePhysicsandMusicDepartmentscancollaboratetodesigninstrumentsandprovidehighqualityrecordingsoftheir

compositions,providingvaluableexperienceforthestudentsandusefulmarketingmaterialforpromotionoftheirdevices.

TheIITGprototyping/designlabwillbenefitstudentsinmanyways.Conceptualizingaproject,creatingaworkabledesign,fabricatingthatdesignandrefiningthefinalproductisavaluableskillset.Studentswhohaveworkedonsuchprojectswouldbemoremarketabletoemployerspost-graduationinthattheycandirectlypointtohands-onexperiencetheygainedwhilecreatingtheirdevices.Thisisacriticalassetforstudentsenteringanyengineeringormusictechnology-basedfield.Thelabsupportsmodesofinquiryintheformofcollaborative,problemfocusedcurriculumandbuildscompetenciesnotcurrentlyofferedatSUNYOneonta(andpossiblywithintheSUNYsystem).

FutureDirections/Plans

Thiscollaborationcanbescaledinvariousways,bothonaninter-andintra-campuslevel.DepartmentssuchasArtorFashion,intheformofmixedmediapiecesorwearableelectronicfashions,couldbenefitfromcollaborationandrapiddesign/prototyping.Biology,Chemistryorotherfieldandlab-basedsciencescouldalsobenefitfromdesignandconstructionofcustomsensorsorotherdatarecordinghardware.Likewise,allofthedepartmentsmentionedcouldcollaborateamongstcounterpartsatotherSUNYcampuses,designingandbuildingcustomhardwareforvariousneeds.Thedigitalnatureofthecircuitdesignsmeansthatothercooperatingschoolscouldquicklysendcircuitsviaemailtostudentsorfacultyattheprototypinglabforfabrication,makingthisauniquevirtuallab.
