Speaker Last MeetingSubmitted by Clint DeRonda Last week our guest speaker was Leesa Froelich, the daughter of fellow NPR Rotarian Lau-rie Froelich. Leesa was here to discuss and share pictures related to her experi-ence in Brazil where she served as an exchange student the past year. With the experience lasting her entire senior year of high school, Leesa spent time with three different families while in Brazil. She said that the education system was comparable to that in United States. The only major difference was that they had 3 subjects a day, each lasting 1.5 hours in duration, and that the teachers rotated classrooms instead of the students. Leesa said that as the only fair skinned, blonde haired student in the school she stood out
like a “sore thumb”. She made a number of relationships with fellow students that would last a lifetime.
While holidays in the US are often cen-tered on the family, it is even more stressed in Brazil. On New Years Eve, Leesa got to experience a local tradition where the family gathers at midnight and jumps over seven waves as a sign of good luck. As is the case with most countries outside the US, public transportation is very accommodating and was used by Leesa to explore the cities she resided in. While in Brazil she took two major trips to South Brazil/Argentina and the Amazon. While in the Amazon, Leesa made the mistake of falling into a tree with poisonous spikes protruding from it. After a short stint to the ER that evening she was able to join the remainder of the exchange students and finish their tour of the Amazon.
A highlight for Leesa was being able to experience the Brazilian Carnival. In fact, she described it as “the time of her life” and urged the audience to experience it themselves. Being open minded, Leesa experienced a lot of the food and drinks that are customary to this region. Most families in Brazil have a maid that prepares fresh meals and fruit based drinks throughout the day. Overall, it was obvious that Leesa found the variety of experiences over the past year as extremely rewarding. In fact, with plans to attend Florida State University in the Fall of 2008, she has decided to minor in Portuguese while majoring in Meteorology. We would like to thank Leesa for coming to share her pictures and experiences with the New Port Richey Rotary Club.

Just a reminder to mark on your calen-dars that two weeks from now, our meeting will be held at Covanta, the solid waste disposal plant.
We had a great team for the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce Ambassador’s Spelling Bee again this year. The words were tough, but they managed to hang in there until the bitter end. It was down to just two teams, New Port Richey Rotary Club and PHCC. Ken Misemer, Frank Grey,
Paul Harris FellowCongratulations to Missy Nurrenbrock

Healthy Thinking• Walking can add minutes to your life. This
enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.
• My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he’s 97 years old and we don’t know where the hell he is.
• I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
• The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
• I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I’m doing.
• I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.
• Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.
• I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.
• The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they’ll say, ‘Well, she looks
good doesn’t she.’ • If you are going to try cross-country skiing,
start with a small country.• I know I got a lot of exercise the last few
years, just getting over the hill. • We all get heavier as we get older, because
there’s a lot more information in our heads. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
• Every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a Happy Hour and by the time I leave, I look just fine.
The FallenThere was an old priest who got sick
of all the people in his parish confessing to adultery. One Sunday, in the pulpit, he said, “If I hear one more person confess to adultery, I’ll quit!”
Well, everyone liked him, so they came up with a code word. Someone who had committed adultery would say instead that they had fallen.
This seemed to satisfy the old priest and things went well until the priest passed away
at a ripe old age. A few days after the new priest arrived,
he visited the mayor of the town and seemed very concerned. “Mayor, you have to do something about the sidewalks in town. When people come into the confessional, they keep telling me they’ve fallen.”
The mayor started to laugh, realizing that no one had told the new priest about the code word. But, before he could explain, the priest shook an accusing finger at him and shouted, “I don’t know what you’re laughing about, because your wife has fallen three times this week!”

Carlos Zubillaga and Cami Austin managed to get through words such as perspicacious, deciduous, dirigible, sarsaparilla, and con-noisseur, but were knocked out of first place with the word lachrymose.
Scott McPherson, a Honey Bee sponsor, had a team in as well. The men, including Scott, Lawrence Hochman and Bruce Mills were all wearing kilts. It was quite impressive, except that Bruce said everyone was trying to look up his kilt to see what he had (or had not) on underneath it! They got knocked out of the competition, with about 15 remaining teams, with the word funambulist.
The evening was a lot of fun, and if you weren’t able to make it, you should try to get there next year. It’s for adults only. There’s lots of partying going on, most of the teams dress in the theme of their choice, and everyone has a great time. Many people have already said that they can’t wait for next year’s event!
Because of last week’s cancelled meet-ing, some of the dates below have already passed. Hope you had a great day!
