Un chopper est une source d’alimentation DC à courant continu qui régule le courant en “hachant” le courant AC en entrée. Ceci se fait en contrôlant la fréquence à laquelle un IGBT(Transistor bipolaire à porte isolée) s’ouvre et se ferme. Ceci ressemble beaucoup à la manière dont le débit d’un liquide est régulé à l’aide d’une vanne qui s’ouvre et se ferme seulement, sans papillon. Inverter- 2Un inverter est une source d’alimentation à courant continu qui commence par redresser le courant alternatif en courant continu, puis convertit le courant continu en courant alternatif haute fréquence. La conversion en courant alternatif est assurée par un IGBT, qui agit comme un hacheur. La tension AC est ensuite transformée en tension appropriée par le biais d’un transformateur. La fréquence est contrôlée pour maintenir le niveau de courant voulu. Après le transformateur, le courant alternatif est de nouveau redressé en courant continu et délivré à la torche. Le transformateur reste peu volumineux grâce à la fréquence élevée du courant alternatif, les inverseurs sont par conséquent d’un faible encombrement et légers.

Thyristor SCR- 2Une alimentation à partir de thyristors est une source d’alimentation à courant continu qui est essentiellement un redresseur en pont à deux alternances. La tension alternative est convertie en courant continu par des SCR ou Thyristors. La “cadence” des SCR détermine le courant de sortie.
