TOUCHMARK AT MT. BACHELOR VILLAGE

THE{FULL}LIFE

November 2015

Veteran, business owner, neighborOn Nov. 11 of every year, Americans celebrate the men and women who served our country and showed incredible bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty. Paul Sobel was just 20 years old when he joined the Air Force. “I enlisted right after Pearl Harbor,” he says. “I felt it was my duty. I felt the job had to be done.”

Paul served with the Eighth Air Force from Feb. 1943 until Oct. 1945. “I became a navigator and flew 35 combat missions over Germany in a B-17. All I can say is I’m lucky to be alive.”

For the past decade, Paul has honored those who lost their lives in the war by speaking about his wartime experience on Veterans Day and other occasions. “Most people are not cognizant of what the Eighth Air Force did,” he says. “We did strategic bombing so the Germans didn’t have the capacity to wage war. The casualties were unbelievable, with 32,000 men killed in the Eighth Air Force, and 33,000 injured. That’s something that’s not known.” Their sacrifice is what inspires Paul to continue to share his story. “People should remember those flyers who lost their lives.”

Life after the war After the war, Paul obtained his degree in industrial engineering and met and married his wife of 66 years, Edee. “She has always supported me in the different things I did.” He wore many hats as the owner of several Manpower Inc. franchises, a data-processing company, and a solar-energy company. The two have three daughters, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

After living in Wisconsin for over four decades, Paul and Edee started spending their summers in their solar home in Sunriver and winters in Arizona. “One of our daughters lives in Vancouver, Washington. There’s a Touchmark there, and she mentioned what a nice community it was. We met a few people who lived in Sunriver and moved to Touchmark and liked it.” Over a year ago, the Sobels decided to sell their home in Arizona and move to Touchmark full time.

“The biggest problem with people my age, we wait too long to make a move like this,” he says. “It’s better to do it earlier rather than later.”

Since becoming Touchmark residents, Paul and Edee have immersed themselves into the Touchmark lifestyle. They can often be found engaging in lively discussions at Socrates Circle, or discussing the universe at a new astronomy club Paul recently started. “We meet every week and have a (cont.)

October is BOUNTI{FULL} Whether you donate money or time, giving is beneficial—and not just for the recipients. Research has shown that the old adage, “It’s better to give than to receive” is true.

Being involved with other living things—humans, plants, animals, the environment—brings meaning and purpose to our lives. It also improves our well-being.

A comprehensive research study in 2007 discovered many health benefits of volunteering, such as lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression, and these could be realized from as little as two hours a week. Older volunteers received greater benefits, as volunteering provided them with physical and social activity and a sense of purpose at a time when their social roles were changing. Those whose happiness was based on a sense of purpose and service had lower levels of anti-inflammatory markers (linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes) while those whose happiness came from consuming things had more unhealthy profiles.

Giving to others offers other benefits, too. When you volunteer, you can: • Increase self-esteem • Stimulate the release of endorphins, a reported “high,” similar to the feelings that come from exercise • Improve your immune system • Gain a new perspective: Taking your mind off your problems helps them seem more manageable • Reduce social isolation by increasing social connections • Develop new skills, knowledge, expertise • Grow as a person, exposed to different or new challenges

Perhaps the most pronounced benefit of volunteering is a boost to our sense of purpose. Individuals with a strong sense of purpose in life make better health decisions, have more willpower, and enjoy more energy. To enhance your sense of purpose, spend time thinking about your core values, also known as transcending values. A sense of purpose is a strong indicator to how motivated we are to change unhealthy behavior and increase longevity. The true characteristic of purpose is that it has meaning for you. Giving is expressing who we are. It is an opportunity to be authentic. Purpose is not stagnant; keep discovering it!

As part of Active Aging Week, residents tested their physical abilities in a range of fitness tests and then were able to compare their results to others in their age group.

“It’s clear the Touchmark culture is one of growth and development, and I love that each day is unique,” says Touchmark’s new Life Enrichment/Wellness Director Anne Wilson about her position. “I love people—their life stories, relationships, families, and shared experiences—and I’m fortunate to work with an amazing team of passionate professionals dedicated to making an impact on residents’ lives.”

Anne brings a rich background in social work, education, wellness programs, and health promotion to her position. Before joining Touchmark, she worked with the Bend Parks & Recreation and Senior Center teaching brain exercises, yoga, and fitness. Prior to

that, she served as wellness director for Bayview Retirement Community in Seattle, Washington, and before that developed wellness programs for individuals, groups, small businesses, and corporations as an independent wellness education consultant, also in Seattle. Earlier in her career, she was a mental health counselor and preschool teacher.

“I find great pleasure in encouraging others to shift perspectives, see things differently, or see something new within themselves,” a common focus throughout her schooling and jobs.

Anne received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from East Carolina

speaker or watch tapes from The Great Courses®.” The Sobels also take advantage of the community’s exercise services.

Paul and Edee are thrilled with their decision to call Touchmark home. “I think the people are the biggest thing,” he says. “They are nice people and very congenial, and that’s important. The facilities are very nice, and you have the opportunity to do many things for physical fitness or mental development.”
