CATE & JOE’S WEDDINGDETAILS
W E L C O M E
Welcome to Charlottesville! We are so glad to have you with us for this wonderful celebration. It’s been a long time since we lived here (we left within weeks of Cate’s birth!), but we know it’s a great place to visit. We hope you will find this booklet helpful and fun.
As a reminder, the wedding itself is at 5pm on Saturday at Christ Church, with the reception following at the McGuffey Art Center. If you would like to drive, there is ample parking at McGuffey, which is a short walk down 2nd Street from the church. There will also be a six-person shuttle from the Hilton Garden Inn beginning at 4:30pm, and following the reception until 11:30pm. If at any point the shuttle is not waiting, please call the hotel and it will be sent.
We hope you enjoy your time here, and we look forward to seeing all of you soon.

“If you want to understand this country and its people and what it means to be optimistic and complex and tragic and wrong and courageous, you need to go to his home in Virginia - Monticello.” - Maira Kalman, New York Times
As an inventor, architect, scholar, President, and the writer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson is easily the most celebrated figure of Charlottesville. He was born and raised on a local estate named Shadwell, he dedicated his personal life to building a famous plantation home nearby, and he designed and founded one of the top universities in the country just down the hill. Monticello is a living memory of Jefferson’s endless curiosity towards life and his endearing interest in invention.
D I R E C T I O N S : Take I-64 to Route 20 South or come south from town on Monticello Avenue. Turn left on Thomas Jefferson Parkway, follow it past Michie Tavern. Follow the signs to pass over the bridge into the Visitors Center parking lot. A shuttle takes you to the house. www.monticello.org
THOMAS JEFFERSON’S PLANTATION

Meticulously designed by Uni-versity Founder Jefferson him-self, the Lawn is the area imme-diately surrounding the Rotunda building. Its long porticos con-nect individual “Pavilions” that originally served as classrooms on the first floor, and faculty or student housing on the second. Behind each is a formal garden.
These days only UVA’s bright-est students are picked to live on the Lawn and the peripheral Range. Famous former tenants include Edgar Allan Poe (in number 13, of course.)
James and Dolley Madison were good friends with Thomas and Martha Jefferson. They even had their own guest room at Mon-ticello. James was the fourth President of the United States, is considered the Father of the Constitution, and authored the Bill of Rights. It must have been quite the cloud of ideas when the Jeffersons and Madisons dined together.
Montpelier is technically in Or-ange, VA, but having just under-gone a massive restoration, it is certainly worth the trip.

Want to go where the students go (or would go if they were in town)? The Corner has been the epicenter of university social life for over a century. It boasts shops, restaurants, bars and UVA-centric bookstores. If you dare to try a Gus Burger at White Spot, congratulations - you’re a honorary UVA student.

Mincer’s has been a Virginia institution since 1948. Every old tradition, anti-Hokie statement and new sports championship has been memorialized on a piece of Mincer’s merchandise. Stop by to pick up a souvenir or to add some Wahoo spirit to your wardrobe.

A “can’t miss” on the Downtown Mall, Caspari is fun for the window shopping alone. With only two retail locations in the world (the other is in Paris) this store boasts beautiful home goods and almost collectable paper products.
The Downtown Mall is the heart of downtown Charlottesville. Parking is available in garages and lots on the periphery, but the mall itself is car-free. There are dozens of stores, restaurants and galleries to explore. Every Friday during the summer, a free concert is held around 5pm at the Pavilion on the East end.
