Exploring the Value of Developing CommunityA discourse for better understanding and success
Online Learning is More than Sitting in Front of a Computer
Screen
To be a successful online student, one must fully engage as a contributing member of the community of learners.
Date
In order to have an online educational experience we need a...Community of Inquiry which involves a cognitive, social and teaching presence.
The Social Presence
✤ Members of the online community need to interact and connect with the group
✤ They need a trusting environment in which to collaborate comfortably
✤ Relationships are built through the expression of their individuality.
Social Presence Methods✤ Begin with introductions/icebreaker
✤ Utilize tools for synchronous discussion
✤ Teach proper "netiquette"
✤ Discussion forums (Coffee House Chat)
✤ Video chats
✤ Continuous conversations
✤ Group activities
✤ Share personal experiences
Supporting Discourse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqTviFK09Uk
✤ How do we move through the learning process?✤ How do we approach problems?✤ Begin seeking out new knowledge.✤ Gain new levels of knowledge.✤ Share what you have learned.
The Cognitive Presence
✤ Members must "be there"
✤ They need to demonstrate their understanding of the content:
Connect ideas through concept mapping
Apply new concepts in meaningful ways
Utilize various resources to clarify understanding
Regulating Learning3 important characteristics of self-regulated learning:
1. self-observation (monitoring one's activities)2. self-judgment (self-evaluation of one's performance) and3. self-reactions (reactions to performance outcomes).
Teaching Presence
✤ Send out welcome letters
✤ Post announcements highlighting connections between course content, activities, and assignments
✤ Facilitate in-depth thinking through online discussions
✤ Provide detailed specific feedback
✤ Reach out to struggling students
✤ Make connections to real world applications and providing clarification when needed.
Setting the Climate
There are 4 elements used to set the climate of the learning environment:1. Create a user-friendly learning environment (physical environment)2. Build a positive rapport (social presence)3. Engender a sense of belonging (emotional expression)4. Promote a sense of purpose (instructional management)
1. Creating the Physical Environment
✤ Develop an easy to follow navigation menu✤ Employ an uncluttered design style✤ Organize flow of information and materials in a logical manner
2. Build a Positive Rapport✤ Decrease psychological distance (isolation): Use open
friendly communication (verbal & non- verbal)✤ Encourage connectedness: Be an active , and offer
opportunities for interaction (student/facilitator & student/student)
✤ Express your personality: Self-disclose some personal information (e.g., hobbies, favourite travel destinations)
✤ Be approachable: Articulate your availability, advise how students can contact you and respond promptly
✤ Develop mutual trust: Show respect, courtesy, and patience
3. Engender a sense of belonging ✤ Address students by name
✤ Encourage students to participate
✤ Recognize and praise progress and achievement
4. Promote a sense of purpose✤ Articulate goals
✤ Monitor performance
✤ Give helpful advice
✤ Provide constructive feedback
Credits✤ This was a truly collaborative effort. Catherine
set up the keynote presentation and sent access to Maureen.
✤ Together they pulled materials from various sources.
✤ We both created the slides and then tweaked and added to them.
✤ Images and materials were provided by both classmates.
The End!
