CHRISTMAS - THE CHRIST CHILD IS A GIFT OF JOY FROM GOD FOR THE LOVE HE HAS FOR ALL OF MANKIND. LET US PRAISE HIM, SINGING “ALLELULIA, EMMANUEL” AND GIVE THE GIFT OF LOVE AND KINDNESS TO OUR NEIGHBOR AND ESPECIALLY GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR HIS ABUNDANT BLESSINGS.
The St. Joseph BEACON
“There’s Christmas in the
home, church and School,
there’s Christmas in the mart;
but you’ll not know what Christmas is, unless it’s in
your heart.
The bells may call across the
snow, and carols search the air;
But, oh, the heart will miss the thrill;
Unless it’s Christmas there.”
Dear Friends,
We are entering into the glo-
rious time of the year, simple in origin, deep in
meaning, beautiful in tradition and custom, rich in
memories, and charitable in spirit. It has an at-
traction to which our hearts are readily drawn.
This joyful season brings to each of us a measure
of happiness that corresponds to the degree in
which we have turned our mind, feelings, and
actions to the spirit of Christmas. The shepherds with haste went to the
manger to pay honor to Christ the Lord. Later,
wise men journeyed from the East to Jerusalem,
saying, “Where is he that is born King of the
Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and
are come to worship him. When they saw the star,
they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when
they came into the house, they saw the young
child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and
worshipped him: and when they had opened their
treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and
frankincense, and myrrh.
Since that time, the spirit of giving gifts
has been present in the mind of each Christian as
we commemorate the Christmas season and re-
member the gift our Heavenly Father gave to us
His Son, Jesus Christ who in turn gave to us His
life, the Atonement, and victory over the grave.
What will you and I give for Christmas
this year? Let us, in our lives, give to our Lord
and Savior the gift of gratitude by living His
teachings and following in His footsteps.
The Christmas season brings to us that
measure of happiness that fits the degree to which

The youth program aims to help the youth
strengthen their faith through social, service, and
spiritual activities. Our goal is to have the youth be-
come more active in the church and in the commu-
nity, all the while having fun learning more about
their faith and building upon their relationship with
God.

There is no better way to participate during this Christmas season
and for the Year of Faith than to make a generous donation or to
volunteer for the poor in our community than through the St. Joseph
Catholic Charities.
Also, it is easy and convenient to stop by the Church and make a
food or money donation for the Food Pantry at the Church office.
As a reminder, the Food Pantry is extremely low on canned vege-
tables, meats, soups, and peanut butter.

The Visit of the Magi
The visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus pro-
vides us with an opportunity to contemplate
what this story might mean to us today as we
continue through Advent and into the Christ-
mas season.
The visit of the Magi fulfilled several Old Tes-
tament prophecies. Balaam prophesied about
the coming Messiah being marked by a star
(Nm 24:17), and Psalm 72 speaks about how
the Gentiles will come to worship the Messiah.
Isaiah also prophesied about the gifts that
would be brought, “Caravans of camels shall
fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah;
all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and
frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the
Lord” (Is 60:6).
Each of the gifts recorded by the gospel of St
Matthew had a prophetic meaning attached.
First, gold was the gift for a king, frankincense
a gift for a priest, and myrrh, a gift for someone
who would die. St. Irenaeus (d.202) interpreted
the meaning of the gifts of gold, frankincense,
and myrrh respectively as King, God, and Suf-
fering as well as virtue, prayer and suffering.
Like the Magi and their gifts, this time
of year is an appropriate time for us to
examine the gifts we bring to our Lord
Jesus Christ and to each other. Gold is
the most precious of metals and is a gift
reserved for a king. What gold do we
bring to the Lord? Depending on the
circumstances of our life, do we de-
vote our time, treasure, and talents to the best of our abilities? Or, do we,
metaphorically speaking, drop off some
bronze and consider that to be good
enough?
Frankincense, as a gift for a priest, serves
as a symbol empowering us to examine our
prayer and spiritual life and our personal
relationship with Jesus Christ. Do we de-
vote time to read the scriptures, to mediate
on the Word of God, and to spend time in
personal prayer with the Lord? Like the
smoke of burning incense, the rising of our
prayers to God deepens the personal rela-
tionship we have with Him.
Finally, the gift of myrrh reminds us about
the finality of our existence on earth. There
is more than just the earthly life we have
and we are reminded by this gift to always
be preparing for eternal life. Our life on
earth will someday end. This gift asks us to
remember that our ultimate goal is to spend
eternity with God in heaven.
As we embrace this most joyous time of
the year, may we always reflect on the gifts
of the Magi and how we might seek to
implement them in our own way.
A light shall shine upon us this day: for the Lord is born to us: and He shall be called Won-derful, God, the Prince of Peace, the Father of the world to come: of whose reign there shall be no end.

Comunidad Hispana-Parroquia de San Jose, Marshall, Texas
Rev. Carlos O. Rangel, Parroco Asistente
Garcia, y asesores adultos Juan y Maria Gonzalez.

NEWS/ISSUES FROM THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH
CHRISTMAS IS MORE THAN A PARTY
Pope Benedict XVI asked Catholics to prepare for Christmas amid a consumerist society by
listening to the voice of John the Baptist, who teaches us to celebrate Christmas as more than
a party and to prepare to see with the eyes of faith the humble stable of Bethlehem, God's sal-
vation, in this time of Advent. "Our aim today is listening to that voice to give space and wel-
come to the heart of Jesus, the word that saves us," said Pope Benedict XVI from his apart-
ment window to pilgrims gathered below in St. Peter's Square.
"In the consumer society, in which we seek joy in things, John the Baptist teaches us to live in
an essential way, so Christmas is experienced not only as an outward party outside, but as the
feast of the Son of God who came to bring peace, life and true joy to people." "John plays a
great role, but always in relation to Christ," said the Pope on Dec. 9, following the feast of
Mary's Immaculate Conception.
He explained that the four Gospels place the figure of John the Baptist at the beginning of
Jesus' ministry, presenting him as his precursor. Quoting from his new book on Jesus' infancy,
Pope Benedict pointed out that "St. Luke has further moved the connection between the two
figures and their respective missions ... Already in their conception and birth, Jesus and John
are brought into relation with each other." He noted that this helps understand that John "not
only is the last of the prophets, but also represents the whole priesthood of the Old Covenant
and therefore prepares men for the worship of the spiritual New Covenant inaugurated by
Jesus."
Perhaps building off the theme of John the Baptist in the wilderness, the Pope also spoke of
migrants, saying they often encounter little understanding among those they meet in foreign
lands. "In preparation for Christmas," he urged people to have "a joyous and fraternal solidari-
ty to come to the aid of their needs and support their hope."
He called on Catholics to "not forget that every Christian is 'en route' to his true home, which
is heaven. He then finished his reflections by entrusting everyone to the "maternal interces-
sion of Mary, Virgin of Advent, so we may be ready to welcome, into our hearts and life, Em-
manuel, God-with-us."

Why Veil?
Would You Veil if More Women Did?
Part I—Introduction to a Series on this Topic
For many women, veiling is an act of humility before Our Lord, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. To veil in church is to make visible
what we believe in our hearts--that Jesus, true God and true Man, is present in the Blessed Sacrament in Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity... and that we
desire to humble ourselves before Him. Because we are human, our faith is edified by things we perceive through our senses: sacred music, sacred art,
incense, beautiful vestments, pious gestures toward the tabernacle, etc. The greatest gift we receive is given to us by mouth: the Eucharist.
Sadly, the wearing of chapel veils is a neglected tradition forgotten by many. By covering our hair when we enter into the presence of
God, we are saying that all glory is God's, not ours, and we desire to please Him. He will know that you are not doing it because you consider yourself
better than anyone else, or because you want to pass judgment on others who do not veil. So many women seem to be afraid of what people would
think if they wore a mantilla, but wish they had the courage to do what they know is right. By enduring the possibility of others thinking those things
about you could become a cross you will be happy to offer to Our Lord. In fact, you might probably give other women the courage to do what they've
been longing to do.
Part II of the series discusses the historical tradition of veiling and thoughts from women who veil in the next issue of the Beacon.

Dear Families and Friends,
A s we prepare for the coming of Christ, we would like to reflect
on the many blessings that we received this semester. Our
year began with the healing and rapid recovery of our Princi-
pal Mrs. Robinson. Our school has been blessed with a won-
derful Pastor and staff. Each of these individuals believes in our school
and works diligently to make St. Joseph School successful. To further our
blessings, our “Saints Under Construction” participated in a marvelous
Living Saints Museum which reminded us to love God in spite of all the
struggles we face in our daily lives.
In beginning preparations for our Annual Christmas Pageant, we are once
again reminded of the blessing that was given us in the form of a young
family struggling to find a warm place to stay. What a blessing it is to
freely celebrate this holy occasion without any worries or fears. Let us be
thankful for this joyous gift given without expecting anything but love in
return.
While reflecting on this message, we discovered that we too have been
blessed by your confidence and faith in our school’s ability to provide
your children with strong academic teachings grounded in Christian faith,
morals and love. We thank God for all our families and pray that you
experience the presence of CHRIST in your CHRIST-mas celebration.
Christ’s Blessings to you and Merry Christmas,

FAITH FORMATION NEWS
P eople often ask the question about the Catholic
program referred to as faith formation: “Is it
“Sunday School,” or “CCD,” or “RE?” It once
was referred to by all these terms.
So, then, why do we now call it “Faith Formation?” The
focus is on forming faith, not just teaching religion. Also,
it encompasses Adult Christian Initiation (RCIA), Sacra-
mental Preparation, Adult Faith Formation (meets on
Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall), and
Faith Formation for children and youth (meeting at the
school on Sundays at 9:00) a.m.). The Bishop makes this
change to “terms” at the Chancery and hopes that parish-
es will follow the same path. Therefore, at St. Joseph’s
we provide “Faith Formation” for our children, youth,
and adults!
While 345 registered this year in the Faith Formation
program, attendance in the program was great until Octo-
ber when many received their 1st Communion and Con-
firmation and many left afterward. Faith Formation does
not end with receiving the Sacraments and continued
attendance is encouraged to deepen their knowledge and
understanding of their faith. While some do still return,
most do not. Unfortunately they feel that since they have
received their sacraments, then they are finished with
learning about their faith and what it means to be Catho-
lic.
This reasoning causes apathy, neglect, and loss of inter-
est in the Mass and threatens their spiritual well being.
Of course, our Church Universal is suffering from this
trend of young people leaving the Church, because their
Catechesis has been interrupted. Pray for our young peo-
ple and their parents that together they will continue this
vital training for the soul with is necessary to continue on
the path to Christ and the Kingdom of God. One never
gets “too old” or “too smart” to not want to continue
their Catholic studies. The Bible and The Catechism are
the two most important documents to continue to read
with prayer and new discovery!
We will begin a new Sacramental Preparation session in
January 2013 for those who expect to receive their Sac-
raments in October 2013.
Merry Christmas and God’s
Blessings to you all,
