The Skeletal System

Page 2: The Skeletal System

Axial Skeleton

The axial skeleton forms the central axis of the body. It consists of the skull, the vertebral column, the ribs and the sternum.

Page 3: The Skeletal System

Bone Marrow

Bone marrow is the tissue comprising the center of large bones. It is the place where new blood cells are produced.

Page 4: The Skeletal System

Carpal Bones

The 8 short bones that make up your wrists

Page 5: The Skeletal System

Cartilage

Cartilage is a type of dense connective tissue.

Cartilage is found in the joints, the rib cage, the ear, the nose, in the throat and between intervertebral disks

Page 6: The Skeletal System

Clavicle

The clavicle is the collar bone

Page 7: The Skeletal System

Coccyx

The coccyx is the bottom tip of the sacrum

Page 8: The Skeletal System

Cranium•The brain and surrounding skull

Page 9: The Skeletal System

Diaphragm

•a shelf of muscle extending across the bottom of the ribcage.

Page 10: The Skeletal System

FemurThis is the

longest bone in your body. It is located on

your upper leg.

Page 11: The Skeletal System

FibulaThis is the

smaller bone on your lower leg.

It lays on the outside.

Page 12: The Skeletal System

Floating Ribs

The last two sets of ribs on your ribcage. They are not connected to the sternum.

Page 13: The Skeletal System

Hard Palate

This bone makes up the roof of your mouth

Page 14: The Skeletal System

Hinge Joint

The hinge joint allows bones to move back and forth, and is found in your elbow and knee. It allows bones to move like a hinge in a door

Page 15: The Skeletal System

Humerus

This is the bone that makes up

your upper arm.

Page 16: The Skeletal System

Joints

The place where two or more bones come together is called a joint

Page 17: The Skeletal System

Ligaments

The bones at a joint are held together by strong bands of tissue called ligaments which allow the bones to move

Page 18: The Skeletal System

Mandible

The lower part of your

jaw

Page 19: The Skeletal System

MetatarsalsThe long bones in your foot.

Page 20: The Skeletal System

Ossification

Ossification is the process of bone formation, in which connective tissues, such as cartilage are turned to bone or bone-like tissue

Page 21: The Skeletal System

Patella

Your Kneecap

OUCH!!!

That’s a nail

Page 22: The Skeletal System

Pelvis

Your Hips

Page 23: The Skeletal System

Phalanges

Includes your

fingers and toes

Page 24: The Skeletal System

Radius

One of the two bones in your lower arm. This bone is

always found on the thumb side of the arm.

Page 25: The Skeletal System

Ribs

Ribs form a protective barrier around your heart

and lungs.

Page 26: The Skeletal System

Sacrum

Sits at the bottom of your spinal cord in between the sides of the pelvis.

Page 27: The Skeletal System

Scapula

Your Shoulder Blades

Page 28: The Skeletal System

SternumThe Sternum connects your ribs together

in the front of the chest.

The bottom tip of the

sternum is called the xyphoid process.

Page 29: The Skeletal System

Stirrup BoneThis is the smallest bone in the human body

Page 30: The Skeletal System

Tibia

Your Shin bone

Page 31: The Skeletal System

Ulna

The other bone in your lower arm.

Opposite the radius.

Page 32: The Skeletal System

Vertebrae

Each one of the disks in the spinal column.
