SANDBACH residents will have the chance to attend a probe into the ‘soundness’ of Cheshire East Council’s Local Plan. The document sets out the council’s case for sustainable economic growth up to 2030. The Plan was submitted to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in May. It will now be subject to an independent examination by the Planning Inspectorate at Macclesfield Town Hall starting at 10am on Tuesday September 16. Deputy leader of the council David Brown, pictued, said: “What we have now is a highly-consulted-upon strategic

document that will map housing, jobs and infrastructure for the next 15 years. “This has been a huge

undertaking and an incredible journey – but a vital one for the people of Cheshire East. “This plan, coupled

with our five-year housing land supply, is also about protecting the residents of Cheshire East from unwanted, unsustainable and unplanned development.” But doubts have already been expressed about the viability of the plan.

Sandbach councillor Sam Corcoran said: “Sadly, even after all the years of waiting, it looks as though the Local Plan is in trouble. “The Plan has already been savaged by neighbouring Stockport Council and serious concerns have been raised in a professional planning magazine. “Even Cheshire East Council’s own planning officers are denigrating their own plan. “At a recent planning application hearing senior

planning officers said that 250 houses were needed to finance five hectares of business park, despite the Local Plan saying that only 200 houses were needed to finance 20 hectares of business park on the Capricorn site by J17. “Serious questions have to be asked about why Cheshire East Council planning officers contradict their own Local Plan. “If the Local Plan financial viability assessment is as fundamentally flawed as the recommendation for approving housing on the Capricorn business park site would suggest, then the whole Local Plan is called into serious doubt.”

LOCAL MP Fiona Bruce recently joined Sandbach pupils Amber Sparks and Owen MacCuish to press the Government to introduce standardised packaging for cigarettes. Mrs Bruce said “I was delighted to meet with Amber and Owen

to hear of their support for this campaign, particularly since they are both members of the National Youth Parliament and therefore advocates for their generation – the one which standardised packaging could most make a difference to.”

AN enquiry has been launched after a piece of concrete fell from the bridge of the M6 at Sandbach hitting two cars. At 5.20am on July 24 police received a report that pieces of the junction 17 bridge had fallen onto the carriageway. Two vehicles were struck by pieces of concrete, one shattering a windscreen. One of the drivers suffered cuts and grazes to his face. He was examined at the scene and taken to hospital for a precautionary check up. The other driver was uninjured. The M6 southbound was closed between Junctions 16 and 17 but cleared as safe to reopen later that morning.

Inspector Liz Cunningham said: “It is not an easy decision to close a significantly busy section of a key motorway network during peak rush hour, but our prime concern is always the safety of the public. “Two vehicles had already been hit by pieces of concrete falling from the bridge, fortunately with no serious injuries, but it was necessary to close the motorway and take expert advice on the bridge′s ongoing safety before the motorway could be re-opened.” An enquiry will now take place, led by the Highways Agency, to determine what caused pieces of concrete from the bridge to come loose.

THE Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has been relaunched at Sandbach School following a 15-year absence. Teacher Emma Austin said: “We have had an amazing response from the boys and we look forward to a bright future.” Recently the first group undertook their Bronze Training Expedition and proved a great success with the 21 pupils who attended. The group travelled from Kelsall to Brassy Green Campsite which was a distance of 12Km, then back to Kelsall on another route,

another 12Km. The students gained good experiences of navigation skills, tent pitching, cooking from trangias, developing teamwork, communication and leadership skills. Despite the heat and warm weather the boys soldiered on completing their training expedition within the set time. Good morale was apparent throughout and although the boys tired towards the end, their determination contributed to a successful completion of the expedition.

by STEWART GREENA PLAY Day event in Sandbach Park proved a hit with youngsters and adults alike earlier this month. Activities included face-painting and henna tattoos along with a collection of animals including snakes and a white hedgehog which everyone could handle. Sandbach Striders also held an egg and spoon race while the Sandbach Clean Team organised a chance for youngsters to find out what it was like to be in a wheelchair

as they were guided round a course. The event was organised by the town’s Leisure Development team as part of National Play Day, along with help from the Sandbach Partnership and Sandbach Town Council. The sun shone briefly on the day as scores of youngsters got to grips with the fun activities. The day continued until 3pm as Town Mayor Elsie Alcock got into the spirit of things by taking part in games and having various animals placed on her including a giant snake.

SANDBACH will stage its increasingly popular Day of Morris Dancing on Saturday September 13. Teams from around the region have been invited to perform at the Town’s Farmers Market, from 10.30am to 3pm. Performances will take place on The Cobbled Square, outside the Old Hall and inside St Mary’s Church Hall. There will also be opportunities for children of all ages to have a go. No experience is needed to join in as the Morris dancers will explain what to do. There will also be food on offer at the Farmers Market, a barbecue at the Old Hall or light refreshments in The Church Hall.

THE Lower Chequer Inn in Sandbach has been re-opened by Joule’s Brewery. The Market Drayton based brewery bought the pub at the end of last year and it has since undergone a restoration and refurbishment. A brewey spokeman said: “The Lower Chequer is claimed to be the oldest building in Sandbach. “It will be the first in a series of Joule’s Craft Beer Bars, a concept being driven by the passion and dedication to the craft beer revolution. “We plan to offer over 30 crafted beers from the core range through to crafted and bottled ciders. “There is immense history to the pub dating as far back as 1570. “It is said that the ‘chequered board’ was used to help educate customers to count their money, and the old landlords of the pub were the money lenders to the locals. “The Chequers was first called the Church Inn after worshipers and clerks from the Parish Church, just 50 yards from the inn used to quench their thirsts after services.”

ECO-friendly youngsters from St John’s CE Primary School in Sandbach Heath have beaten off competition to be crowned Ansa Junior Recycling Officers of the Year. The event took place at a fun, interactive event at Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre. Ansa, a company owned by Cheshire East Council, aims to reduce the long term environmental impact of council services. The judges – Ansa chairman Councillor John Hammond, board director Councillor Roger West and general manager Jane Thomason – chose Shannon Levitt and Aimee Trembath from St John’s as this year’s winners. The judges felt the pair had

been the most innovative, creative and proactive in their approach. At the event, Shannon and Aimee talked about the work they had been doing over the last year in school to raise awareness about recycling, which included making animals from old boxes. They also performed a play at school where the reception children made trees, made planters from unusual items such as trainers, skirts and bin bags and also held an eco bake-off. Cllr Hammond said: “I would like to congratulate Shannon and Aimee for winning – but must also congratulate all the children for being shortlisted as it’s a great achievement.”

SANDBACH Town Council is currently booking a programme of events and entertainment for the newly re-opened town hall. And the team is keen to incorporate the ideas of local residents. As a result they are asking to hear what people would like to see at the venue this autumn and in spring next year. Mike Wellings, the council’s development officer, said: “This is about having as much community input into what we do as possible. “We are committed to letting the people who the Town Hall serves have their say, so that we

can organise events that are of interest to as many people in Sandbach as possible. “Events staged so far have produced a real buzz in the town and we are keen for as many local people as possible to enjoy an event in the heart of Sandbach. “If your suggestion makes it onto our calendar of events, you will be entered into a draw with the chance to see your event on the big stage for free.” People can email their suggestions to [email protected] or tweet them @sandbachhall.

SANDBACH RUFC first team have been back in training ahead of the start to their third season in National League 3. The new campaign kicks off on September 6 when they host Dudley Kingswinford at Bradwall Road. Before then the team faces friendly games against New

Brighton and Caldy. The team then visits Chester on August 30 in the quarter final of the Cheshire Cup. The squad, now coached by the new team of Scott Barrow and Pete Allen, have been training every Tuesday and Thursday, and some Saturdays since the start of July.

The early high intensity fitness work has now widened to include more tactical work, allowing the players more time to adopt to a new style of play. Allen said: “We’ve got some incredibly skilful players in the squad, with plenty of cover in most positions. “I’d be happier with a bit more

depth in the front-row though. “We are certainly on the lookout for props and if anyone reading this wants to give it a go at this level, they’d be welcomed with open arms at Bradwall Road.” Anyone interested should contact Pad Davenport on 07729 783554.
