PurposeThepurposeoftheBoneDiseaseProgramofTexasRolanetteandBerdonLawrenceResearchAwardistoprovideinitialfundingforpromisinglaboratory,pre-clinical,translationalor clinical studies in metabolic or metastatic bone disease. Projects will promote research development in the areas ofbonemetastases,bonehealthincancerpatients,boneformationandskeletalbiology.Theawardprogramemphasizeshypothesis-driven research with high potential for future externalfunding.Researchproposalsshouldadvancethegoalof reducing the incidence and morbidity of bone disease.

eligibilityResearchawardsareopentoBaylorCollegeofMedicine,TheUniversityofTexasMDAndersonCancerCenter,TheUniversityofTexasHealthScienceCenter,andRicefacultymembers.Preference will be given to proposals from junior faculty (instructororassistantprofessorwithinthefirstfiveyearsoftheirinitialappointment).Seniorfacultywhoworkoutsideboneresearch areas but have made observations relevant to bone research,mayalsoapply.Proposalsshouldbefocusedonthemajorareasofprogrammaticdevelopment:bonemetastases,bonehealthincancerpatients,boneformation,orthebiologyof bone.

TermsAwardee(s)willreceiveamaximumof$45,000peryear(directcostsonly).Fundingwillbeforone(1)year.Investigators(M.D.orPh.D.)mustallocateaminimumof15percenteffortfortheproject. Annual progress reports will be required. The Program Advisory Committee may withdraw awards for non-compliance or non-performance during the funding period.

The award recipients will be announced at the conclusionoftheScientificRetreat.

Award managementFunds will be awarded following written acceptance by the awardeeandnotificationofIRB/IACUCapproval.AnnualprogressreportswillbereviewedbytheBoneDiseaseProgramDirector and Co-Director. Funds that are not used in a twelve-month period may be approved for a one-year extension if requestedinwriting,withstrongjustification,atleast30daysprior to the end of the award.
