ThecountryisfumingafterarepealofNetNeutralityoccurredonDecember14,2017.NetNeutralityistheprinciplethatbansinternetserviceprovidersfromslowingdown,speedingup,andblockingcontentfromcertainwebsites.Itissaidto“preserveourrighttocommunicatefreelyonline,”accordingtosavetheinternet.com.WithoutNetNeutrality,companiessuchasVerizoncandecidewhichwebsitestheywanttosucceed.Theynowhavetherighttoslowdownandblockcontenttheydon’tlike,andcanchargeextrafeestothefewcontentcompaniesthatcanaffordit.

TheNetNeutralityrulesalsoprotectedthemarginalizedonlinecommunities,suchaspeopleofcolor,LGBTQcommunities,andreligiousminorities.Activistswillnotbeabletoopenlyprotestwhattheybelieveinwithouttherulessetthatallowedpeopletoseeandcomprehendtheirviews.AlthoughChairmanAjitPai’sproposaltorepealNetNeutralitypassed,thereisstillwaystogainthisfreedomofspeechback.ManyarecallingonCongresstousea“resolutionofdisapproval”andoverturnFCC’svote.However,thisbenefitsthebigprovidersthatcannowfreelyblockcompetition.
