The Raider Times
We currently have 2 vending machines that have drinks in them, they are
located by the gym. The vending machines now have a variety of beverages in them:
Vita Ice, Gatorade, Mini Gatorade, water, Propel, and Lipton Iced Tea. The prices vary
from $1.00 to $1.25. A survey was sent out to the KMS students asking whether they thought the
vending machines should have food in them. 90.8% of the students that answered said
that they think there should be food located in the vending machines. The other 9.2%
disagrees. When asked why she thought the vending machines should have food
in them, Addison Kautzer responded with “I think the vending machines should have
food in them for kids at nutrition break that forgot to bring a snack to have an
opportunity to get a snack.” She thought that some good snacking ideas included: chips, cookies, granola bars, and
pretzels. Miles Detroye didn’t like the idea of food in vending machines. When asked
why, he said “All of the food would just be junk food anyways, or food that isn’t
healthy. Besides, kids are already spending too much time at the vending machines;
time that should be spent in the classroom!” If you think about it, it would make much more sense to have a vending
machine with food in it. If you’re thirsty you could really just go to the nearest
bubbler to get a drink. But if you didn’t bring any food to school you’re just going to be
hungry and there’s nothing you could do about it. So what do you think? Do you think
that kids should be able to get food from the vending machines or do you think it
wouldn’t be necessary?

Super Bowl Sunday
By: Nate Stephany
On February 3rd, Super Bowl LIII took place at
Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Maroon 5, Travis Scott, and
Big Boi performed at the halftime show. While the game
moved along slowly many records were set. Including
fewest points scored combined (16), longest punt(65
yards) and fewest touchdowns combined(1).
This wasn’t the first time the Rams and
Patriots faced off in the Super Bowl. In 2002 the
Patriots won 20-17 against the Rams.
The game itself was a shocker. The first points
were scored by the Patriots five minutes into the second
quarter. The next points scored were late in the third
quarter, a 53-yard field goal by the Rams. The first
touchdown was scored nine minutes into the fourth
quarter. It was the only touchdown scored in the Super
Bowl. The game was sealed after a 41-yard field goal by
Stephen Gostkowski. Overall there were only 16 points
scored in the game which was the lowest scoring game in
Super Bowl history.
The 2019 NASCAR Season is here
By: Braeden Senkbeil and Mason Fintelmann
Boogity, Boogity, Boogity, let the racing
season come. On February 17, 2019 the new season
will begin. In 2018 Joey Logano won Homestead
Miami race and took home the cup from their race.
Logano’s score was 5040. In the endings it was
between Joey Logano and Martin Truex Jr. for the
win. There are 35 other tracks to race on, they
start in Daytona, Beach and end in Homestead,
Miami. These tracks are both in Florida. Nascar has
to get the 36 races done in 10 months. The flag will
approximately drop at 2-2:30 pm in Florida, but in
Wisconsin it will drop at 1-1:30 because of the time
zone difference
Many famous racers like Joey Logano, Kevin
Harvick, Jeffery Earnhardt, Martin Truex Jr, will
meet at Daytona Beach on February 17th, for the
season-opener. In 2018, the Daytona 500 took three
hours, twenty-six minutes, and twenty-nine seconds.

Battle of The Books
By: Josh Schwarz
As you probably already know Mrs. Sabel runs the battle of the books, and
she does a good job. All the information below came from Mrs. Sabel. Mrs. Sabel has ran the battle of the books for eight years and has
run a competition each year. This year 78 KMS students signed up to
compete in Battle of the Books. It all start off with grade level battles in
a double elimination tournament. This year there were 33 different grade
level battles, and then of course the grand finale battle where the winning
team from each grade level competes at the school wide assembly. We kick
off the battle in October and start battles the first week of December. Teams need to read 16 books to compete and have all the
knowledge of these books. Mrs. Sabel belongs to a professional
organization, Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association, and
recommendations are made by media specialist from all over the State and
a committee from the organization selects the books. There are actually
20 books, but we only use 16 for our school wide battle. The team that
advances to state will need to read an additional four books to be
competitive in the state competition. I asked Mrs. Sabel some of her opinions on the battle of the books. 1. What was your favorite book in this year’s Battle?
“Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz is one of my favorite books. I love
that it is action packed.” 2. Do you like doing Battle of the Books? “I LOVE doing Battle of the Books. It is great way to be able to
introduce kids to books they may not have selected on their own and have
them get excited about reading! The school-wide event brings everyone
together. You can really feel the excitement as each grade level cheers on
their team!” 3. Do you plan to keep doing Battle of the Books?
“Yes of course! I tell our elementary kids about Battle of the
Books and they always ask me ‘when is Battle of the Books going to start’
the first time they see me at KMS! It really helps keep me connected to
the middle school students.” 4. “If you could change anything about Battle of the Books, what
would it be? “Maybe that we would do it twice a year!”

Bingo
By: Xander Blanke
Have you heard that KMS students
have the chance to help residents at the local
nursing homes play BINGO? Well, KMS
students have already attended their first
BINGO game! It was on Thursday, November
15. The nursing homes that the KMS students
visited were WillowDale and Atrium, both
located in New Holstein. They let you take
turns helping with calling numbers, playing
BINGO, and handing out the prizes. The
prizes were various fruits including apples,
bananas, oranges, and pears.
The KMS students were split into two
groups. One of the groups went to WillowDale
and the other to Atrium. They were pulled out
of class in the beginning of 9th hour and
didn't come back until the end of 10th hour.
Mrs. Andre our school counselor, was our
leader for this trip.
We encourage that KMS students help
out with this if they can. Mrs. Andre said,
“The students do a fantastic job of
interacting with the residents. The residents
and the students always leave with smiles and
stories. Assisting with bingo is a great way
for students to give back to the community
and it's truly heartwarming to watch how
caring and thoughtful the students are when
they are a part of this opportunity!” For

Movie review: 47 Meters Down
By: Sarah Dawe
Do you like the idea of exploring underwater? The
thrill of knowing that there might be creatures down there
that you’ve never seen before? If you do, then I strongly
recommend this movie.
47 Meters down is about two sisters that take a trip
to Mexico as a vacation, just to get away for a while. They
decide to go with some friends to watch sharks from a diving
cage. It’s all fun until the worst happens - the chain holding up
the cage breaks and the cage holding Kate and her sister Lisa
sinks all the way down to the bottom of the ocean. But that’s
not the worst part. How will they breathe once their air tanks
start to run out? But they can’t just leave the cage, what
about the sharks. What options do they have?
47 Meters Down is full of mystery and adventure, and
it’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what
will happen next. Will they survive alone at the bottom of the
ocean? Will they cross paths with any sharks? Watch to find
out!
Movie Review: Black Panther
By: Laney Woods
Black Panther. A movie with a plot that is both
paper thin and boring, it makes you wonder how it had
such amazing ratings. Well, I have an answer for you,
it’s the end moral. That end moral being as bland and
basic as “racism is bad” without any other commentary.
Of course I agree with this message, it would be hard
to find a person who doesn’t, but it’s bland, and it makes
for a bland movie. Even Zootopia, a movie meant for
children, handled its message in a more mature way. Even though the message is bland and
uninspired, there was much more to hate about the
movie. Such as the story and the characters were both
overplayed and stupid. The main character has the most
predictable plot line in any movie I’d ever seen and
literally every other character is either boring or
unnecessary. The story itself was boring and uninspired,
and most of the humor ranged from bland to groan-
worthy. Of course in any movie there is always
something to like about it, specifically the
cinematography-which means everything technical with
the movie, editing, lighting, etc- was fine, though most
of that is expected of a movie from Marvel. Of course
the actors were fine, some were worse than others, of
course. In the end, most of Black Panther was just
shlock that I wouldn’t watch again. Most movies I can
take, there is usually something that stands out with
every movie ever, some are so terrible it becomes
hilarious and some have beautiful action scenes that
look amazing, but Black Panther was just a movie that
had no merits and just left me looking at the clock
through the whole viewing.

Should we Have the Check System?
By; Xander Blanke, Josh Schwarz, Lexus Koeser, and
Porsche Burrell
We have checks for behavior problems and as
a punishment if you have not been good. Most grades
have an incentive but you have to make the cut by
having a certain amount of checks or lower. Checks
aren't too harsh on students, but it tells them to stop
and fix what you did or are doing. It tends to become
crueler when a teacher gives more than two in a day.
When you earn too many checks, you get out of the
incentive and have to sit out and do not fun stuff (it
depends). As the check system lives on other people
wish it wouldn't. The check system is supposed to keep
students on their best behavior. In the fourth grade,
some of the teachers had their classes do checks to
prepare the students for fifth grade. They had the
same rules as all the teachers have now for their
students for checks. We took some of the student’s responses on if
they think we should keep the check system. Coryn
Fromm said, “Yes we should have the check system so
that the misbehaving students aren’t ruining the
incentive experiences for others.” Josh Thiry said,
“No we should not have the check system because
whoever gets checks always get so many so quickly
that they don't care about the incentive afterward
because they already have the limit, therefore they
go right back to being disruptive.”
Overall, 54% of the students we surveyed
were in favor of the incentive system, while 46% were
opposed to it.
Should Kiel add another restaurant? Just an
opinion
By: Owen Korb
I recently asked the school what
restaurant they would like to be added to Kiel.
The results were all over the board with two
really standing out. Those two were the most
requested restaurants. The restaurant in first is
Culver with fourteen people. The second most
requested restaurant is Taco Bell with an
astoundingly close number of twelve people.
Although there was one person who came up with
a new restaurant. That person is Josh Thiry who
said he would like to have El Camino 2: Electric
Boogaloo added to Kiel.
As much as I love Culvers I personally
would have liked have like to see Taco Bell win. I
really like their food and I think it would be a
nice addition to Kiel. My favorite thing on the
menu though is their cinnamon twist. If you
haven’t had those you are missing out. Either way,
a little change wouldn’t be bad.

Kindness is key
By: Mallory Jenkins
On January 15th, Mike McGowan came to Kiel
Middle School to talk to each grade about kindness. In
case some of you don’t really know much about Mike
McGowan, he is a well-known public speaker that goes to
schools to talk about our generation. Mike teaches
subjects like bullying, kindness, and working hard in
school. This year’s topic was about kindness, for the up
and coming kindness month (Which is in February).
Though he mainly covered kindness, he also
covered many other topics. During his presentation to the
eighth graders, he stressed how important it was to work
hard in school, and how far a little bit of effort can go. If
you work hard and don’t give up, you can’t fail. Mike talked
to every grade at KMS about things like bullying,
kindness, and to never give up on your dreams. I surveyed
KMS, the coolest thing I found was that 100% of the 50
people I surveyed said they want him to come back.
Which hints that he might be coming back next year!
Only 2 people did not like the presentation, but
the funny thing is they weren’t there. The things I saw
the most on the results of the surveys was he was funny,
he touched on important topics, and was encouraging.
Mike McGowan definitely left a good message for KMS to
follow. But the real question is, how will you use kindness
in your daily life?
If you are having any other issues at school
or home, don’t hesitate to talk with Mrs. Andre in
room 203c!
