The photo above represents the my idea of what an ideal working/learning community looks like. It represents an informal environment, with little distractions, where individuals can speak openly, and freely without fear of judgment being passed. (This is the space that my partner and I previously used for brainstorming sessions… lots of creative ideas prospered from this room!)

These were 3 of the apprentices whose training I was responsible for on my 2009 deployment off the coast of Somalia. We trained together, worked together, ate together and sailed half way around the world together.

My Vision of Community Learning
By : Carleigh Robb
I chose this image taken by my mother in Mexico. These children were putting on a dance they had been taught for their community. This photo represents the importance of community learning, and children in our communities.
My Learning Community consists of diverse people, everybody has a story. When
we collaborate with our own ideas and experiences we all contribute to the creation
of a promise or solution.
Every person is a piece of the puzzle.

My first day as a Best Boy Grip on a feature film. I was overworked and underqualified.
A film set is a constantly changing, evolving, and fluid environment that calls for massive adaptability in its technicians. An old Key Grip (whom I worked for)used to tell me, “If you go home at the end of the day without having learned something, you weren’t doing your job right.”

Learning Community
• A Learning Community, like the example above, is a small group of like minded individuals, supportive of each others efforts and ideas, while working together to develop their knowledge, experience and confidence in a classroom setting.
• The classroom environment is small, collaborative and supportive with enthusiastic, engaged, friendly and contributive students and professors.

This is a photo of my husband and I with our friends in Bali. We had to work together for a month travelling from place to place. I learnt so much from this experience, my
friends and working together – I use these skills in day-to-day life.

Learning Community Reflection
To me a “Learning Community” actively reflects the dynamics and symbiotic nature of a group of individuals
working towards a common goal in an educational setting. No one person has unlimited strengths on which to draw
and for this reason I find the idea of a “Learning Community” very appealing because it allows for the
shortcomings of individuals to be compensated for, and subsequently improved upon, with the groups help. To me this is the best setting in which to work towards goals of a
wide and varied nature.

LEARNING COMMUNITY – My Home I see a learning community as a place where people who support each other help others grow in many different ways.
I have been blessed to be part of a family that resembles a learning community. It is a warm environment where I continue to learn to be a better person.

Each and every one of us is unique and possess individual characteristics. When we come together and learn as a
community, rather than as an individuals, we become infinitely stronger.

Learning Community
The first picture I get in my head when I think about a learning community is a school. School is a place where educators and students from various communities and backgrounds can come together in a comfortable learning environment.

A learning community is much like an all-star band. Many years of study in different
disciplines, many years of playing and creating with others, the orchestration of
strengths, the sharing of values, beliefs, and emotions, and the active engagement
towards constantly setting new goals and producing greater challenges, all come
together organically on one stage.

This is a picture of my family. I chose this particular picture because we are all doing something different. My mom and sister are discussing, my dad and I are listening and my brother is asking a question. Learning to me means everyone brings something different and together we create an open trusting and supportive environment i.e.) a family.
Learning community is the driving force behind reaching the common goal of being
educated. No matter how tough the obstacle is, as a community we are fearless.

We are a team that have come together and grown into a family. We have grown to understand each other strengths and weaknesses to perform and succeed!

This photo was during a press conference of the Canadian Ski Team before the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. This photo represents what a ‘learning community’ is to me. Four individuals gathered by the same goal, who have worked hard together to get where they are. In my career, I learned more from the people around me then I could have ever imagined. Working closely with teammates, colleagues, coaches or teachers really creates a positive learning environment. I truly feel that success in anything, is hardly attainable without the influence of others.

I chose this photo because it reminds me of a field trip that I went with RRU in Earth & ecology class. The importance was the discussion between my classmates and the learning objectives outcomes.

The native culture has an ability to express learning through many different pathways.
Song, dance, herbs, stories and other tools are used to communicate ancestry, heritage and
beliefs. This picture is a good example of their learning community.

A learning community should be a place were individual should come together regardless of their age or gender. I choosed this picture because it shows the group spirit of working together as a team and that’s how a learning enviroment should be because we all learn from each other.
