3 BLUES NEWS July 2011
The Bisig Impact Group recently announced the line-up for this year's Louisville Blues-n-Barbecue Festival at the water tower on River Road and it's a good one. On Friday, July 8, the evening gets started at 5:30 pm with the blues, soul and r&b band The Jaywalkers. The band now features Sylvia Walters on vocals. The Nick Stump Blues All Stars follow at 7:45 pm. Most people know Stump from his time with the Metropolitan Blues All Stars. The closer for Friday night is Tee Dee Young and the Scandalous Band from Lexington, KY. To my knowledge this will be the first time for Young to play in Louisville. He has his own club in Lexington and at this year's International Blues Challenge in Memphis he was voted the King of Beale Street by the Beale Street merchants. His show starts at 9:30 pm. The music starts at 4:00 pm on Saturday, July 9 with the Noah Wotherspoon Band from Cincinnati. They will be followed by The Predators at 5:30 pm and the Joe DeBow Band at 7:45 pm. The closer Saturday night is Blind Pig recording artist Hamilton Loomis from Katy, TX. Loomis was mentored at an early age by Bo Diddley and contin-
ues to play an autographed Gretsch guitar given to him by Diddley. I saw Loomis in March at Stevie Ray's. About halfway through his second set he unplugged his electric guitar, walked off stage and proceeded to climb a ladder positioned along the north wall. He then plugged into a Budweiser guitar beer sign on the wall. He takes a few min-utes to tune in and then proceeds to play a song. Backwards. He had to because he didn't take the sign off the wall. Who knew those were working guitars? His show starts at 9:30 pm. After the success of last year's festival, a third day has been added for 2011. Music starts on Sunday, July 10 with Johnny Roy and Rubtones from Lexing-ton, KY at 1:00 pm. The Stray Cat Blues Band takes the stage at 3:00 pm. Greg Martin gets a break from touring with the Kentucky Headhunters and will be playing guitar with the Stray Cats. The festival closes with local favor-ites Hellfish at 5:00 pm. The festival costs $7 before 6:00 pm and $10 after but as in years past thanks to the Bisig Impact Group KBS members will receive free passes to the event. You can find more info online at http://www.bisig.com/ or check out the ad in this issue of Blues News. Chad Nordoff was born and raised in Bloomington, IN and made the rounds as a solo blues performer for many years when he moved to Memphis. He teamed up with Jason Vawter in 2009 and they now perform as a full time “roots rock and blues duo.” Nordoff and Vawter bring their act called Whirled Boogie to Gerstle's Place on Thursday, July 21. The show is free and starts at 8:00 pm. The deadline for applying to this year's KBS solo/duo con-test is Saturday, July 23. You can email me at [email protected] if you have any questions about the competition. The contest will be held Sunday, August 14 at Zeppelin Cafe. You can also catch Jimi V and Screamin' John, the winners of last year's solo/duo contest, every Thursday night at Wick's Pizza on Baxter Ave. There is a new open mike at Harley's Main Street Tavern near Second and Main in downtown Louisville. The event is hosted by the band Flood Water. Flood Water is Jody Wright on drums, Chris Rourke on bass and Sean Ewing on guitar and vocals. I stopped in recently on a warm and windy Wednesday night and heard a good mix of blues, Rolling Stones and rock music. It's great to see that music still spills out onto the street from the old Zena's Cafe loca-tion. I'm sure the residing ghosts were pleased.

New Music Reviews!
Hold On To Me Grand Marquis Grand Marquis Music 2010
This release by this Kansas City group includes 13 songs based on the blues/jazz/swing of the city’s heritage. The music is reminiscent of Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, and some other more recent stars such as Harry Connick Jr. The music is filled with horns-soprano, alto, tenor and bari-tone saxophones, trumpet, and sousaphone.
The music harks of another era to me. The jazz of the 1920’s is what this music is about. It’s “swing extraordinaire”. It is not blues but rather more of what I call the Scat Man Carothers style of music. You can check out samples of the music at www.cdbaby.com . .
Bob Brown
Watermelon Tea Retro Deluxe Rinkled Rooster 2010
This is the second release by this group. The term “Retro” in their name is meaningful not just in the music itself, but in the recording of it. For example, some of the songs sound like they may have been a jam recorded in someone’s garage. That does not take away from the music but makes one wonder if the artists of yesteryear, recording today, would have wanted it that way. The music harks back to rock of the 1950’s (a measured use of reverb, no other effects, bass that
can only be heard, not felt).
Some of these songs I found very entertaining with good guitar work and vocals. Others I found I could take or leave. There are 16 songs on the CD, all of which were written by Robert J. Thompson. Jimbo Mathus plays on and produced the CD which is a plus.
This CD is good music and is as advertised. The title does not say “Blues” in it anywhere. Retro refers to 1950’s and possible early 1960’s rock. There is a large group of people who love this music-Woody Chancey’s followers and King Sonic fans and me. This CD will excite you. It is available on CD Baby. .

Live In England Hamilton Loomis Rinkled Rooster 2010
This live CD us the best of both worlds. From its tout as a live performance, the production is so crisp and solid that it sounds meticulously clean, as if recorded in a studio. This should be credited to the band’s tight performance of their songs. Having seen them perform in person, I can attest that they have a groove that links them together and it draws you closer to the stage just so you can join them. And when Hamilton moved off the stage to play his guitar and walk around the club,
you got up and moved with him. Standouts on the CD for me would be the songs “Workin’ Real Hard”, “Best Worst Day”, and “Bow Wow”. Also, if you are a fan of Bo Diddley, you get a rousing rendition of “Who Do You Love”; this tribute going out to Diddley as he was a personal mentor to Loomis. That statement right there lets you know that you are onto some-thing golden.
Hamilton is a more-than-capable guitar player and singer as well as a standard blues harmonica player. His band con-sisted of horns, keyboard and drums each getting a chance to show out and off, especially noted is the bass guitar play-ing of Kent Beatty who lays it down so thick and groovy that it will have you playing “air bass”. Tracks 3. “Workin’ Real Hard” and 13, “Get My Blues On”, had me doing just so.
Lucky for Kentucky, Mr. Hamilton Loomis is Saturday’s closer at the Louisville Blues and Barbecue Festival at the Water Tower . Be sure to not only get the “Live in England” CD, but also check him out to see the “Live in Louisville” version. You won’t be disappointed.

Medicine Tab Benoit Telarc Records TEL-32823-02
This is Tab Benoit’s seventh solo release on Telarc and contains 11 tracks with seven new origi-nal tunes co-written with Anders Osborne, who also plays on the album. According to Telarc, Medicine is “… 100% pure magical snake-oil. A melodic potion that provides immediate and satis-fying relief for all aches and pain. Benoit’s Medicine is a guaranteed cure for heartache. It’s the genuine article – this Medicine is for whatever ails you.” And, I agree, this musical snake-oil is
good for you and your soul.
As offBEAT.com says “Almost nobody can beat Tab Benoit for playing raw, dirty-sounding roadhouse blues. … It’s got some great rockers and shuffles and all-out, shake-what-your-mama-gave-you boogie tunes.”
One review on amazon.com sums it up like this: “Guitar licks that can cut diamonds, stories that can break your heart and rhythms that can heal your soul … what else can you ask of a true Blues-man??”. There ya go, that’s it in a nutshell. In addition to Anders Osborne, this album also features Ivan Neville on keyboards, Brady Blade on drums, and Corey Duplechin on bass, along with Michael Doucet (fiddle/vocals) on three tracks.
I have heard most of Tab’s CD’s and they are awesome, but Medicine is even better (some say it’s his best CD yet) – making it a ‘you gotta get this one, now’ CD. You can get it online or at the store, but get it and boogie down.
I had the pleasure of seeing Tab and Anders at this year’s Jazz Fest in New Orleans, and hope you got a chance to see Tab, right here in the ‘Ville, at Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar on June 13th. Just can’t get enough of Tab Benoit – not only is he a Louisiana treasure, he’s a blues lover’s treasure.

They Came To Nashville Author: Marshall Chapman Where: Ear X-Tacy Who?
That’s what I wanted to know. We walked in late, and there was this really tall lady standing on the stage – bending over towards the audience, to adjust a pedal or cord or something, and she was barefoot. My first thought was that this was the warm up act and that the lady on stage was David Allen Coe’s old bus driver Betty who must have started a career of her own. But – it was Marshall. She still had time for a half-hour’s worth of performing and she put on a good show. Her identity banter with the audience immediately won her over and into the hearts of any doubters. Why Louisville? Marshall’s connection with Louisville’s own, Tim Krekel, the two of them performed, wrote and recorded to-gether. Why be there at all: Promotion of Ms. Chapman’s new book, They Came To Nashville, in which she asks fifteen of today’s stars, what happened to them in Nashville that couldn’t have happened any other place. Kris Kristofferson, Mary Gauthier, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Bobby Bare, Miranda Lambert, Bobby Braddock, Terri Clark, Eddie Angle, Don Henry, John Hiatt, Ashley Cleveland, Gary Nicholson, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Willie Nelson all had stories to share. To tell their early Nashville stories without your reading the book would be unfair to you and to Marshall. But, I’ll share this one about Marshall: Her hair caught on fire from a sunken mantle candle where she was leaning while meeting Billie Joe Shaver for the first time.
What about the CD? Marshall Chapman M E L L O W I C I O U S ! TALLGIRL RECORDS tallgirl.com All songs are written by Marshall except: #7 – I Fell In Love Again This Morning – co-written with Danny Flowers, and #9 – I Love Everybody (I Love Everything) co-written with Tim Krekel who also sings, plays guitar and Harmonica. This has become something of an Anthem song for Marshall and in memory of Tim. The book and the CD are worth discovering.

Book Review - Marshall Chapman They Came To Nashville
Performance Review - Eric Lindell at Stevie Ray’s May 23rd, 2011
Eric and his 3-pc band showed up at the venue for a little announced show on his tour just as strong storms were receding from our river city. And I’m sure glad he did! Eric has been around a while showing off his phenomenal voice, jammin' guitar licks, and trademark English beanie cap. His presence is usually on the fringe of blues festivals, although his musical style is really a combination of roots music, funk, soul, blues, along with Cajun and country nuances. Really in a category of its own.
His latest work, a CD entitled Cazadero, is an interesting mix of exotic island sounds intertwined with a couple of country twang songs, roots and a N’awlins jazzy-sounding solo. He told me that he became interested in the clarinet and found player Nick Ellman and wanted to expose the warm sounds of the instrument on this CD. I mentioned to him that I can play clarinet and would be available for a touring position at which he shyly grinned and grabbed a marker to autograph my poster. Guess I'll have to stick with my day job ha ha!
Anyway, the show was very entertaining. He started out with a tune from his Gulf Coast High-way album, “Willin’ and Able” . He did some songs from his Low on Cash, Rich in Love album while he rocked the title song, of that CD that did very well including, "Lady Day", among others. I especially liked "Country Living" from his Gulf Coast Highway album, and enjoyed how he stepped up the tempo of the song "All Alone" from an earlier CD entitled "Change in the Weather" (the CD that put him on the radar); he also did a rambunctious version of "Casanova" that had the crowd rocking.
Eric has a laid-back, down to earth style, but when he gets to jamming on the guitar he can burn those strings up! I really like how Eric creates a different atmosphere on each CD, each CD puts one in a different time/place, sorta the way Bob Dylan does in my mind.
Eric joked with the audience, displaying his infectious grin often, and seemed to be quite at ease after starting out sorta nervously; after all, it was his first show at Stevie Ray's. He quickly introduced his 2 member bandmates, two youngsters on the stand up bass and drums both from Louisiana, and joked that he would "bring the other half of the band next time"...I hope he comes back soon, too!
