Kindergarten
Our Kindergarten students have learned so much this year They have developed into
great readers and writers This past quarter we read and wrote about the life cycles of
many animals including the butterfly chicken frog and many sea animals We are now
able to write complete sentences using capitals punctuation and amazing words such
as adjectives In math we practiced addition and subtraction and figured out which
operation to use when reading word problems The kindergarten students are very
prepared for first grade next year Wishing them all an exciting summer
We loved seeing your childrsquos academic growth and development over the course of this school year and we will truly miss each and every child As summer break approaches students and families are looking forward to many wonderful events Summer activities provide valuable experiences in which children learn about themselves and the world around them Your childrsquos life can be enriched through reading and journal writing Please make sure that your childrsquos day includes time that is set aside for independent reading and also some fun and relaxation
A special wish to our fifth graders who are moving on to middle school Take the wonderful things you have learned in your time with us and make a difference in all that you do

First Grade
Wow What an amazing adventure the first grade had at the Naples Botanical Gardens
thanks to support from our PTO and our Chipotle fundraiser Students viewed marsh
plants on a walking tour and even got to touch some algae as they learned about how it
helps keep our water clean The butterfly garden was another highlight of our trip We
were able to see a variety of kinds of chrysalis and different types of butterflies to follow
up the learning we did in science about the lifecycle of butterflies One of our favorite
parts was seeing the waterfall and cool art work around the gardens First grade would
like to thank the PTO parents who supported our fall fundraiser and the wonderful chap-
erones who all made this trip possible
Second Grade
Amazing second graders continue to rock it out From getting our ldquorhythmrdquo and ldquorhymerdquo
down in stories to learning about the various types of weather patterns and how
important our Earthrsquos resources are to our existence Planting seeds and watching them
grow into beautiful healthy plants learning how the earth soil and sun all contribute to
the life cycle has been an amazing and fulfilling learning experience for second grade In

symbols of our government the Native American Indians our American heritage and
exchanging some shared family traditions We have had such an exciting and rewarding
year in second grade

Fifth Grade Fifth Grade has been feverishly at work during the 4
th quarter The students have
thoroughly enjoyed having Junior Achievement lessons with Mr Kozel His lessons about our economy business and entrepreneurship have kept the classes eager for his return every week We are very lucky and appreciative that he worked with the teachers around the testing schedules to let each class participate in this wonderful program Fifth Grade was also able to complete part 2 of the FGCU Panther Posse program and spend a day out at CREW in Lee County and learn all about the importance of the watershed and how animals and humans interact with the environment A very special thank you to Mrs Ricky director of FGCU ldquoWings of Hoperdquo program for inviting our 5
th
graders to take part in this amazing experience We made it through our FSA ELA and Math tests as well as the FCAT Science test Our students did an amazing job being respectful of all those testing while moving through the hallways and worked incredibly hard while taking these tests We are very proud of each and every one of our students After the big tests we were able to preview and buy our favorite new books at the Book Fair Many of us found some special new books to read that sparked our interest Thank you to Mrs Bolen Mrs Fornberg and all the PTO moms that helped make the Book Fair happen Next the 5
th graders got a sneak peek into life as a middle school student by taking a
field trip to either North Naples Middle School or Oak Ridge Middle School Students took a tour of the schools and had presentations on classes and expectations for next year The countdown is on We were also able to take a field trip to the Baker Museum at Naples-Artis thanks to Mrs Powell She helped coordinate all the classes going to the museum to see all the beautiful artwork and sculptures held at the museum Our docents at the museum were incredibly knowledgeable and helped guide us through the exhibits Thank you Mrs Powell As we prepare for the final push to the end of the school year we will be having our 5
th
Grade Recognition Ceremony our pool party and BBQ It will be a special time to say our good-byes as we prepare for summer and moving up to 6

Greetings from the Art Room
It has been a fabulous year for both Ms Pancamo and myself While the school year is winding
down we are still finishing up some projects to send home A few classes are putting the final
touches on their clay sculptures Those pieces will need to be fired in the kiln before being re-
turned
Mrs Powellrsquos fourth grade classes have been working on their own version of Grant Woodrsquos
American Gothic I am so impressed with their creativity and sense of humor as well as their
craftsmanship with this project Please talk to them about it once they are completed
Finally I want to recognize our fifth grade students and teachers for their successful trip to
Artis-Naples (the Naples Museum of Art) Vineyards Elementary has not visited the museum in a
few years and I have heard nothing but raves about this field trip I am pleased to say that our
students were poised engaged and inquisitive and had a very positive experience Way to
represent Vineyards and Collier County Schools
Best wishes to our fifth grade students as they move on to their next step in Education Have a
wonderful summer break
Artfully yours
Mrs Powell and Ms Pancamo
A Note From Mr Ziegler Congratulations to the VES fifth grade for completing their music video for the song Happy by Pharrell
Williams Also thank you to the PTO for providing each student with a copy of their video The fourth
grade has had a successful unit on guitars The students have learned to play and read music for the
1st three open strings on the guitar as well as the notes on the 1
st and 3
rd frets of the first string In third
grade we have had the following Recorder Karate belts awarded 114 white 112 yellow 109 orange
101 green 91 purple 77 blue 62 red 46 brown and 33 black Second grade worded on musicals and
learned the songs from Seussical the Musical First grade and Kindergarten continued learning basic
music concepts and instruments of the orchestra
During the summer try to add something musical to your familyrsquos activities You could begin private
lessons on an instrumentvoice Go see a live performance Have a music night at home where all
members of the family sing karaoke You could even enroll your kids in a summer musical theater
production at one of our local theaters Most importantly have fun
When Kids Argue
It came from the backseat It crept up while we were on the phone It wasnt a monster but
something much more menacing - kids arguing
Have you noticed that kids pick the worst times to start bickering Few things can be as
annoying or draining for parents What options do we have when kids argue with each other
How about
What statements can we make in these situations to help keep the problem of arguing on the kids shoulders where that problem belongs Some parents try this one It sounds like you guys are having a problem - and it will be interesting to see how you solve it And if they dont solve it Parents can solve the problem - perhaps by charging the kids something to put back the energy it took to listen to that fighting Some parents charge $1 per minute to listen to arguing in the car (or other situations in which the parent cant escape) Other parents charge by offering some of their own chores for the children to accomplish to put back the drained energy Many parents using Love and Logic techniques have success empowering their kids to solve problems and resolve conflicts (on their own) rather than reacting with anger and frustration in the moment And when the kids dont resolve things wisely it costs them something You can hear more great ideas for sibling arguing and bickering in Dr Charles Fays fun CD Sibling Rivalry

Literacy experts and educators agree that children of all ages need to be read to read
by themselves and talk about the books they have read during the summer Your
studentrsquos summer reading and book discussions will help maintain reading skills
improve reading fluency and provide the opportunity to learn new vocabulary and
concepts Most importantly when parents and children enjoy summer reading
together children develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime
In an attempt to help curb the ldquosummer sliderdquo and maintain literacy skills a calendar of
quick and easy literacy activities follows this newsletter Each day holds and activity
that you could do with your child or have them complete it individually You are also
encouraged to have your child read over the summer Log how many minutes a day is
read together andor independently You will be amazed how quickly five minutes here
and eight minutes there can add up over the summer
Happy Reading

Reading Tips from the Reading Coach
A Message from our
Intervention Support Specialist
As we go into summer and you view your childrsquos report card please review if your child
may need additional support or enrichment going into the next school year As parents
you are a integral factor in your childrsquos education so please always reach out to the school
when you have questions or concerns about your childrsquos education and progress We
always differentiate to meet your childrsquos specific needs whether it is remediating
accommodating or enriching within the curriculum There are different resources and
strategies to support the student depending on their needs Often times parents are not
aware until it is too late When discussing with your child how their day or school year
went please discuss with your teacher any questions or concerns you may have so as a
team we can put in place interventions early on to better support each individual student

Media Center News
Our Spring Book Fair was a terrific success Twenty-seven dedicated 3rd 4th and 5th graders read the SSYRA books this year and participated in the Sunshine State Celebration They all did an amazing job and had lots of fun
Beware the ldquoSummer Sliderdquo Thatrsquos what happens when children do not continue reading over the summer Their reading levels slide down over the break and then they have to try to catch up when we come back to school in the fall Be sure to visit your local public library You and your child can get library cards for free
Keep on reading

graders to take part in this amazing experience We made it through our FSA ELA and Math tests as well as the FCAT Science test Our students did an amazing job being respectful of all those testing while moving through the hallways and worked incredibly hard while taking these tests We are very proud of each and every one of our students After the big tests we were able to preview and buy our favorite new books at the Book Fair Many of us found some special new books to read that sparked our interest Thank you to Mrs Bolen Mrs Fornberg and all the PTO moms that helped make the Book Fair happen Next the 5
th graders got a sneak peek into life as a middle school student by taking a
field trip to either North Naples Middle School or Oak Ridge Middle School Students took a tour of the schools and had presentations on classes and expectations for next year The countdown is on We were also able to take a field trip to the Baker Museum at Naples-Artis thanks to Mrs Powell She helped coordinate all the classes going to the museum to see all the beautiful artwork and sculptures held at the museum Our docents at the museum were incredibly knowledgeable and helped guide us through the exhibits Thank you Mrs Powell As we prepare for the final push to the end of the school year we will be having our 5

Literacy experts and educators agree that children of all ages need to be read to read
by themselves and talk about the books they have read during the summer Your
studentrsquos summer reading and book discussions will help maintain reading skills
improve reading fluency and provide the opportunity to learn new vocabulary and
concepts Most importantly when parents and children enjoy summer reading
together children develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime
In an attempt to help curb the ldquosummer sliderdquo and maintain literacy skills a calendar of
quick and easy literacy activities follows this newsletter Each day holds and activity
that you could do with your child or have them complete it individually You are also
encouraged to have your child read over the summer Log how many minutes a day is
read together andor independently You will be amazed how quickly five minutes here
and eight minutes there can add up over the summer

gymnastics Students in K-2 did aerobic dance and 3-5 graders participated in ball room dance
All students completed our tennis unit learning the forehand stroke and how important it is to
keep your eyes on the ball
We want to give a special send off to Mrs Purdy as she will
be retiring this year We have enjoyed all our years together
and want to wish her many more years of relaxation as she
endeavors on a new part of her life Thank you for all your
guidance We especially love you taking the time and effort
to lead our school for many years in the Jump Rope For
Heart Thanks again and enjoy your new free time We
love you Mrs Purdy
Last but not least please have an enjoyable summer and remember to keep moving always
wear sunscreen and especially reapply use safety when near water and when walking or riding
your bike Have a restful Summer and cant wait to see you in the Fall
Donrsquot forget to check our website for school
supply lists dress code and other important
back to school information

Have you noticed that kids pick the worst times to start bickering Few things can be as
annoying or draining for parents What options do we have when kids argue with each other
How about
What statements can we make in these situations to help keep the problem of arguing on the kids shoulders where that problem belongs Some parents try this one It sounds like you guys are having a problem - and it will be interesting to see how you solve it And if they dont solve it Parents can solve the problem - perhaps by charging the kids something to put back the energy it took to listen to that fighting Some parents charge $1 per minute to listen to arguing in the car (or other situations in which the parent cant escape) Other parents charge by offering some of their own chores for the children to accomplish to put back the drained energy Many parents using Love and Logic techniques have success empowering their kids to solve problems and resolve conflicts (on their own) rather than reacting with anger and frustration in the moment And when the kids dont resolve things wisely it costs them something You can hear more great ideas for sibling arguing and bickering in Dr Charles Fays fun CD Sibling Rivalry
bull Whether we are physically present to hear it or not
bull How much we charge to listen to it

Noetic Mathletes at their best
Julie Kelly
Marlene Dimas
Media Center News
Our Spring Book Fair was a terrific success Twenty-seven dedicated 3rd 4th and 5th graders read the SSYRA books this year and participated in the Sunshine State Celebration They all did an amazing job and had lots of fun
Beware the ldquoSummer Sliderdquo Thatrsquos what happens when children do not continue reading over the summer Their reading levels slide down over the break and then they have to try to catch up when we come back to school in the fall Be sure to visit your local public library You and your child can get library cards for free
Keep on reading

Our Spring Book Fair was a terrific success Twenty-seven dedicated 3rd 4th and 5th graders read the SSYRA books this year and participated in the Sunshine State Celebration They all did an amazing job and had lots of fun
