MORTON FEAST WEEK-ENDThe Morton Feast week-end was a great success despite the weather trying to do it’s best tospoil it!Starting with the Fun Run on Friday evening, the rain held off while 60 runners set off alongthe riverbank, ranging in age from 5 years to 73, and including a pantomime cow! Allcompleted the 5k course in under an hour, so well done everyone! The results are listedseparately, so congratulations to all the winners, especially the first three home, one aged 8and two 10 year olds! The organisers would like to say a huge thank you to all the helperswho made the evening go smoothly, the members of the Village Hall Committee who helpedwith the admin, the drinks, the marshalling, the tail runner, the Morton Striders who helpedwith the time keeping and also the marshalling. Also thanks to the Park Run who lent thesignage and finish funnel. And especial thanks to the Morton residents who clear the pathsand gates of nettles and undergrowth without being asked, it makes the course so much moreenjoyable. The heavens opened on Saturday morning but the footballers were determined not to give up,and with the Tug o’War carrying on during the morning too, all got thoroughly wet through.Big thanks to the valiant crew who kept everything going, especially Tim Ronis whoorganises the football on the day and the referees, and Caroline Loates, not now a Mortonresident but cajoled into helping yet again, and her band of helpers for the Tug o’War.Congratulations to all the winners, see separate listing. Commiserations to all those who haveto wash the muddy kit …… Many thanks to Stan at the Ship Inn and John Lord of GW Lordfor sponsoring the football medals again.A wise decision was made first thing on Saturday morning to hold the Summer (!) Fairindoors after an anxious look at the weather forecast. The school was packed with stalls andgames, and those that attended enjoyed spending their money in a variety of ways. Manythanks to all those who manned stalls, sold refreshments, ran games and generally helped tomake it a fun time for all. The Summer Fair was a collaboration between the Village Hall, theSchool and St Paul’s Church, and with the addition of stalls from various local charities andorganisations, including LIVES and Trinity Football Club, there was much on offer to keepeveryone amused, including an excellent performance by the Trinity Performing Arts groupwho managed well despite being rather squashed into the main school hall. The evening saw many of us enjoy an indoor barbeque at the Ship Inn, not unusual for thispart of the world! The 50/50 squares game was drawn at the BBQ, the winning number was 6and it was won by Pat Stewart. A donation was made to the Village Hall from the Name theScarecrow competition held in the pub, thanks to Pam and Stan, coincidentally the names ofthe scarecrows!Sunday morning started with a well attended Family Community Service at St Paul’sChurch, led by Mary Cooney, which was a lovely friendly family service with a number ofchildren there. The reading was by the Morton Guide leader Rosi Fieldson, and the MortonTrentside School choir entertained with two lively songs. Everyone was given a stone to addto a cairn, with an explanation that a cairn is to show the way.Afterwards several people stayed on for refreshments before heading home in the rain.
This would have been followed by cricket if the weather had been kinder. However theafternoon cleared up enough for cricket to continue into the evening, and Cooper’s Clubberswon the day by winning 3 out of 4 matches.Altogether a busy and successful week-end, despite the dismal weather trying to thwart allour efforts! We hope everyone had chance to see the scarecrows which were to be in placeuntil July 17th, well worth a walk round Morton.
Morton Feast FootballThe boys under 11 football final was between Gaffs Greats (Charles Baines)and Saxilby. The game was won by Gaffs Greats after a penalty shoot out.The boys under 9 was won by Morton Monkeys playing against ParishPlaymakers. The girls football was won by the Simmond’s Stars playing against ParishPitches.
Morton Feast Tug o’WarThe under 11 boys Tug o’War was between two teams from Parish School,Parish Penalties beating Parish Possessions. The boys under 9 team Parish Playmakers got their own back after the footballby beating Morton Monkeys. The girls Parish Pitches also got their own back by beating Simmond’s Stars.
The Football and the Tug o’ War are games put on for the primary schoolchildren of Gainsborough and District, thanks to the generous time and effortof the volunteers, for which Morton Feast Committee and the children are verygrateful. The children thoroughly enjoy it and this year persevered with thegames despite the downpour.
