Whatbetterwaytobewelcomedtotheinnovationdistrictthananinnovativebridge?MyplantoreplacetheNorthernAvenuebridgeisaboutmuchmorethanabridge.Icameupwithanallinclusivevisionforthearea.TheMassachusettsfallenIraqandAfghanistanVeteransMemorialParkisbeingbuiltnearbyintheseaportandwillbecompletedverysoon.ThebridgeIhaveproposedwillbethecapstonepieceofthememorialandofthedistrictitself.ThisbridgeisinspiredbytheQuanticoNationalMarineCorpsMuseum,theIrishHarp,TheZakimBridge,andtheSamuelBeckettBridgeinDublinIreland.ItselegantlinescreateafocalpointhalfwayovertheFortPointchannelthatcommandsitspositiononthewaterfront.ThisbridgewasdesignedwithIrishinspirationbecauseofthelonghistoryofIrishheritagelocatedinSouthBoston.ItalsotakescuesfromtheZakimBridgetogiveitasenseofplacewithinBostonwhilestillbeingfresh,newandinnovative.Finally,thisbridgetakescuesfromtheQuanticoNationalMarineCorpsMuseumtopayhomagetothefallenveteransofMassachusetts.AsaMarineveteranmyselfthiswasveryimportanttomeasIdrewinspirationforthisbridge.ThisistheperfectbridgetoaddtotheFortPointChanneltocomplimentthememorial.ThebridgewillalsobelitatnighttorepresenttheneverfalteringdedicationoftheServicemenandwomenofthiscountry.

MyideaistocreateaniconfortheRoseKennedyGreenway,InnovationDistrict,FortPointchannel,andsouthernpartofdowntownBostonthatisartistic,thoughtprovoking,purposeful,andalsoseamlesslyintegratesintothefabricofBoston.ThebridgewillreconnectAtlanticAvenuetotheSeaportthroughabeautifulCablestaybridgethatwillbeinvitingtovisitors.ThiswillbecomeatouristdestinationforthemillionsoftouriststhatvisitBoston.Peoplethatwouldnothaveknownaboutthememorialintheseaportorhadareasontocrossoverthechannelwillbedrawntothisiconicbridgewhichwillthenwelcomethemintotheinnovationdistrict.AlsowaterfrontpropertyintheSeaportismostlysoldorunderconstructionandthisbridgewillgivebuildingslocatedfurtherinlandfromthewaterfront,alongtheFortPointdistrict,aswellasdowntownaniconicviewaswell.Thisbridge,liketheZakim,resemblesasailfromashipandwillseamlesslyintegrateintotheareaimprovingonallviewswhichitisincludedwithin.Visitorstothiscitywillbeinvitedtotheareabythisbeautifulbridgeandbythenameofthebridgewhichispurposefulaswell.TheywillcrosstheFortPointChannelonthisiconicbridgeandenterBoston’snewestupandcomingneighborhood.ThisbridgewillendonNorthernAvenueatSeaportSquareandvisitorswillhaveastraightlinetowardstheMassachusettsfallenIraqAfghanistanmemorialparklocatedwithintheseaportaswellastheharborwalkandSeaportSquare.Thisisaspecialareaofthecityanditdeservesabridgewithapurpose.Thisbridgeisthatpurpose.

TheSamuelBeckettBridgeinDublinwhichdrewinspirationforthebridgebeingpresented.

Thisbridgewillbeasinglelaneineitherdirectionwithguardedpedestrian/bikepathslocatedonbothsides.Theendpointofthisbridgeintheseaportwouldleaddirectlytooneseaportsquareandtheentranceoftheinnovationdistrict.Ichoseforthisbridgetobefixedinplacewithoutaswingingactionsothatitisaccessibletoboaters,pedestrians,bikers,anddriversatalltimes.Thisbridgewouldhaveanelevationof16feetatthecenter.Thisbridgewouldinviteboaterstoexploretheareathustravelingthefortpointchannel.Eventuallytheareawithinthefortpointchannelwillgrowandeventuallymayhavewaterfrontbarsandrestaurantsalongthechannel.Thiswouldbeagreatupandcomingareaofthecityfordiningonthewater.Thefortpointchannelusedtobeawasteland.WhatbetterwaytoshowBoston’sprogressionintothefuturethantobuildaniconicbridgeattheverygatewayofitsnewestwaterfrontneighborhood?ThisbridgewouldalsobeveryvisiblefromAtlanticAvenueandtheRoseKennedyGreenway.Thegreenwayalreadyisahugesuccessandthisbridgewillbeoneofthefinalpiecesofthatsuccess.VisitorswalkingalongthegreenwaywillpassFanuelHall,theCustomHousetower,theBlackstoneMarket/BostonPublicMarket,andastheyroundinternationalplacewouldbegreetedbythismagnificentbridge.ThisbridgebringsaddedvaluenotonlytotheInnovationDistrictandFortpointarea,butalsothegreenway/downtownaswell.

Asdetailedabovetheharborwalkwillbeseamlesslyintegratedintothisbridgewithroomforexpansionontheopposingsideofthechannelinthefuture.Thepilingswouldbeclearedoutbelowthebridgetoallowunobstructedaccesstotheareaforboaters.Pedestriansandbicyclistswouldhavededicatedprotectedlanesonbothsidesofthebridgetoprotectthemfromtheflowoftraffic.ThegradeofthebridgewouldfollowthepathoftheMoakleyBridgetoallowunobstructedaccesstothevariousformsoftransportation.NorthernAvenuewillagainbeconnectedtodowntown.
