The Lookouts in the Grove
Welcome
Imagine if you will, a beautiful sunnymorning in the center of the town of AtlanticBeach, along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast...you step outside and gaze over the oceanwaves gently rolling across the shoreline...
Summer places may appear to be fantasies, but they connect us to realthings. More than just places to spend vacations, they allow us to putourselves back together. A house becomes a cottage when it provides relief from a weary world.
Summer houses are places where the demands and routines of normal life drift from memory as swiftly as summer clouds transform from simple wisps into dolphins. Simply enough, a cottage is a place to visit, rest our working souls and thoroughly absorb the amenities - and even contemplations - of a oceanside environment built just for that purpose.
Whether it is visited once a year or once a week, a summer cottage exists for the sole pleasure of the occupant, not to fullfill any real need or specificfunction - other than restoring the soul.
Because we distance ourselves from the very earth that supports us, because we dance to the merciless beat of everyday life, because families aredisjointed or ill-acquainted with each other, because modern life is socomplicated, we need cottages. We need them in order to reconnect withnature, with ourselves, with family and with the simplest aspects of life.
Cross, Amy Willard. The Summer House,Harper Collins Publishing, LTD., 1992
