Judge- John LomasJohn is a Queensland accrediated judge with PSQ. He is an active entrant in Internationals, Organiser and performsworkshops, He’s a very experienced portrait worker, Highly respected by all Queensland Camera Clubs and activelyinvolved in camera clubs for over 40 years.
I would like to start by saying to you all, I hope thatyou all have a Merry and Safe Christmas and Happy andProsperous New Year.
The other evening I went down to watch the lightingof the local Christmas Tree.
It is a 40m high Norfolk Pine and has been used forthis purpose since 1953, or 66 years. It is such a dominantlight, it is visible for 30 nautical miles and located near theHeads of Port Philip Bay, and is noted in navigationalcharts so that shipping is aware of it.
It is a local event, with the festivities starting aroundan hour earlier and one of the local schools providing achoir to sing many festive songs. My guess is 3-400persons were present. It will remain alight until AustraliaDay.
But my thoughts are with the many people affectedby the fires in NSW and Queensland.
Most of the Eastern coast appears to be alight fromnear Canberra up to Cairns, with no end in sight. Nowsome bad fires are also moving into the Eastern area inVictoria.
With Summer only a week old this is a bad portentfor the next 3-4 months throughout the country. I knowsome of our members have been affected by fires in thepast, I hope that you are now all well away from theaffected areas.
There have been a few circle changes in the past fewmonths.
Circles 6 and 7 have combined and Craig Homberghas taken on the role as Secretary. Also the Secretary ofthe B&W circle, Rhonda Herbert, has had to resignbecause of too many other matters after her moving toShoalhaven Heads and starting some new employmentduties and Martin Finzel has taken that role.
It has always been a concern that, as members dropout it has been hard to find replacements, so I am pleasedthat members have stepped in to fill the need. Thank youCraig and Martin.
It has been good to hear that Rita is back in actionagain. A few months ago she managed to fracture an ankleand after many weeks in hospital and the local NursingHome she is now back home and getting into folios. I amsure all members will be glad to know that she is makinga good recovery.
As I complete this letter the bad fires aroundAustralia continue in at least 4 states. Also the Volcano
eruption in N.Z. has created a lot of sadness. More so being at this time of the year when we
should all be enjoying the festive season. Until next year, keep taking those pictures and
circulating them. From what we have seen via The Lensover the past year you are taking some magnificent pictures.

General Secretary’s ReportHi Everyone,
We are nearly into a new year but at the momentthings look grim in our state NSW, we have fires burningall up the east coast and some in the mountains.
At our place we have a constant smoke haze if thewind is coming from the east and a dust cloud if the windcomes from the west.
The drought has hit our region hard - we go onto level6 water restrictions before Christmas and there is no sign ofrain.
Our Camera Club and our Creatives Group that Ibelong to decided this year that instead of the usual secretSanta we would donate the money to the drought and fireappeals, the drought doesn’t just effect the farmers the smalltowns are feeling the pinch with no money, no purchases; itis a very difficult time.
A friend asked me the other day whether I was gettingsome ‘great shots’ with the smoke haze and the orange glow.
I can’t raise any enthusiasm to photograph what is
someone else’s distress - I know people do and the imagesbecome part of our history but every day we see great colourin our sunsets through the smoke haze but it indicates thatour forests trees and grass and unfortunately some peopleshomes are going up in smoke.
I recently spent a week on Norfolk Island and it isvery green but even there on a couple of days the smokefrom Queensland blew over the island.
It is an interesting place, not sure I would like to livethere although the people are great but there is not a lot todo.
After wandering around the convict settlement ruinsthen travelling from one end of the island to the other a fewtimes we did run out of subjects to photograph.
Maybe with the opportunity to travel to othercountries being quite affordable, we expect excitement onall our trips, or maybe it is hard to compare a week onNorfolk to fifteen days in the Antarctic.
We were there for the inaugural photographyfestival, which was organised by Ted’s Cameras,
Queensland branch, attendees were from Vic, Act, Tas,NSW and Qld, fifty of us in total and it was an interestingtime.
One of our participants dropped her camera and wasleft with nothing to use, fortunately one of the organiserswas able to lend her a camera but it does make you thinkabout having something for a back up when you spendmoney on a photographic trip and something happens toyour gear.
I will finish up with an image from my trip andwishing you all a great Christmas and Healthy Safe NewYear.
Jenny - Secretary
