Focus on Volunteer
Dear ISC families,
We have the iRace #5 on Sunday May 7th, which is fast approaching.
If you are interested to volunteer, please ,make sure that you are registering on the ISC website.
We have a busy month of May that coming up!
Our next hosted meet will be the Medley Challenge on May 19th-21st. ISC is looking for Host families.
Island Swimming Club needs approximately 8 to 12 host families to each host a pair of billets from May 18th - 21st during the Medley Challenge meet. The swimmers are from the Tualatin Hills Swim Club (the Thunderbolts) in Oregon, aged from 13-17. They've billeted with us in the past dur-ing the Bennett Cup, and are looking forward to returning. They will arrive in the evening of Thursday May 18 and leave after the meet on Sunday, May 21.
Host families will fulfill their volunteer obligation for this meet. Host families will need to have submitted a criminal record check for every adult (18 years and older) in the household, as well as driver abstracts for those driving the billets between your home and the pool (see details below).
Please contact our Billet Coordinator, Marc Wensauer, at [email protected], if you have any questions.
If you have any questions about volunteering for this meet or questions about a certain role, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you again for your generosity of time and support.

Hello parents and swimmers. I hope you are all having a great start to the week.
This weekend we had a meet in Nanaimo. The meet went very well and the Blue group at SCP swam very well with
many swimmers qualifying for upcoming meets such as VIR's and AA's. I would like to congratu-late all the athletes on their great performances and amazing attitudes and excitement they had this weekend, and I look forward to carrying that same attitude into upcoming competitions.
This week we have a slightly altered practice schedule for Friday and Saturday due to a swim meet taking place at SCP. Friday practice will run from4:00-5:00 pm in the pool then we will be doing a quick dryland session from 5:00-5:30 so please make sure athletes bring proper attire and footwear for an outdoor drylands session.
On Saturday our practice will run from 6:00-7:30am in the pool and will be followed by dry-land from 7:45-8:15am Please note that this is the same length of session as most Saturdays but will start and finish 30 minutes earlier than usual. Thanks and I look forward seeing you all at the pool!

Hello swimmers,
The NRST spring meet went
very well. We saw some great
racing and finished with a few
good times as well. Standout
swims were Nathan in his free-
style events, Mady's 200 breaststroke and Ali-
son in her 200 IM. The swim of the meet was
Nicola with a PB in the 200 fly she was the only
one brave enough from our group to challenge
it. Keep up the great work. We are now entering
our final phase of our training cycle, we will shift
from a technique/ awareness leg focused ap-
proach to more demanding fitness/ arm focused
work. Your swimmer may be tired and sore at
times over the next few weeks. This is normal
and a key part of our plan to swim faster as the
year winds up. Try not to miss too many
workouts as every opportunity to practice in
this important phase will help you achieve your
season goals.

Hello Provincial
First, a little word on our first long course swim meet. I was very happy with the results and how the swimmers raced this weekend since we had few
weeks of disturbed schedule and we raced un-der fatigue. Lots of best times and we now have a good idea of what we need to do for the next few weeks getting ready for the Medley Chal-lenge (May 19-21) and VIR (June 2-4) which will be the meet to get some qualifying times for AA/AAA and far Westerns. Make sure you have great attendance and come to swim practice with a purpose and goal in mind, the next few weeks will determine how well you finish your season. This Saturday we will have swim prac-tice from 5:30-7:30 AM. We will have a fun Parent/Swimmer Yoga session with Kate from 7:45-8:45 AM. This change is due to the Wave-maker swim meet happening this week end at our pool.
Have a good week.

Hello Seniors!
The first long course meet of the season is always a great starting point for where you are in train-ing, skills and endurance. We saw lots of great swims from Matt, Tia, Tayah and Aglae on
the weekend. Remind yourself that even if you didn't go a best time or a swim you had hoped for, reflect on the skills that you can improve on now until the next meet in May! There is always room for change, it's never too late.
Reminder: This week we are swimming Friday morning from 5:15-7:00AM, instead of Friday PM due to the Wavemaker swim meet hap-pening at our pool.

Hello Swimmers, Big weekend of racing for every-one! Well done to those who attended NRST and lead the team to some strong earlier LC season perfor-mances. Kudos to those who raced in Cal-
gary and stepped up for their April championship meet. Special recognition to Zoe for her podium per-formance in the 100m Backstroke! Everyone in our group made finals at the meet and were able to swim faster and move up the rankings at night. The danger following any competition is falling prey to illness. Racing takes a toil that we often don’t real-ize until it’s too late. Step up your recovery routines this week. Can’t stop now! Take a few minutes to reflect on your meets from last week and let’s dive back into your training. “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” (George Bernard Shaw). What most needs your attend today? Relentlessly pursuit that thing - today, tomorrow, for the whole month. As we look ahead to the weeks remaining in the LC season, take each practice one by one and aim for more consistency of effort and skill. This week we’re back to full schedule. Please refer to the schedule change I sent out. I’m away this week and you have the privilege of learning from an incredible group of ISC coaches. Ask questions, listen carefully, and be coachable - they know a lot and they are here to help you! Please note that this Friday morning everybody prac-tices, Friday afternoon is off, and Saturday morning practice starts 30 min earlier, with yoga also 30 min earlier. See you at the pool, Coach Ben

Nanaimo Spring Sprint (April 22-23)
Recap This past weekend ISC went to Nanaimo for some long course races. ISC had over 80 swimmers at the swim meet. For the younger swimmers, this swim meet was one of their first long course experience, which is really exciting. For other swim-mers, it was another great opportunity to put in action what they have been working on during practices, during some goal setting sessions and more. Many swimmers crushed their swims and got some awesome best times that qualified them for AA/AAA and VIR.
It was a long 2 sessions meet, and all the swimmers stayed focused and gave their best in the pool during their races.
We did a big group activation led by all the ISC coaches, in order to get the team spirit going!! That was really fun.
Thank you to all the parents for their patience this past weekend and a big Bravo to all swimmers who raced their heart out and left this swim meet more accom-plished. Next stop, is the Comox 10 and under meet and the Medley Challenge.

2017 Westerns Canadian Championships Recap
Last week ISC swimmers traveled to beautiful Calgary for West-ern Canadian Championships.
ISC had 51 individual finals, 5 individual medalists, and 1 relay medal! Every ISC swimmer made a final - that is phenomenal! 6 boys and girls relay teams, including 1 mixed relay, finished in the top 8 with our boys 4x100 Free squad posting the 6th fast-est time in Canada so far this year. Matthew Clavelle picked up his Canadian Junior Championship qualification in the 100m Breaststroke, allowing him to compete at CJC's this summer in Toronto. Brian Ni and Zoe Hunt-St.Louis picked up their Canadi-an Swimming Championship qualification in the 50m Free and 100m Backstroke respectively, punching their tickets to CSC in Montreal this August. Island Swimming Club finished 5th overall and 2nd amongst the BC teams at the meet!
Our swimmers built their energy throughout the meet to finish in spectacular fashion. It was great seeing this young team come together, move together, and support one another on the National stage.
Congratulations to all our swimmers who competed at Western Championships!
Special thanks to Jackie Hellard for chaperoning our team trav-el!
