Mastering in speaking is one of the important aspects of learning English.
Learning speaking needs more chance to practice the target language. SMA Banua
Bilingual Boarding School applies the rewards and punishments in the English
teaching process. It is interesting to find out the kind and the influence on language
teaching to the improvement of students‟ speaking skill.
The formulation of the research problems were: 1) What kind of rewards and
punishments do teachers used on language teaching to the improvement of students‟
speaking skill ?, 2) How is the influence of rewards and punishments that teachers
used on language teaching to the improvement of students‟ speaking skill?. The
objectives of this research were to find out: 1) the kind of rewards and punishments
that teachers used on language teaching to the improvement of students‟ speaking
skill, 2) the influence of rewards and punishments that teachers used on language
teaching to the improvement of students‟ speaking skill.
The population of this research is 72 students of tenth grade of SMA Banua
Bilingual Boarding School. The samples of this research are 39 students from class C
and D of tenth grade female at SMA Banua Bilingual Boarding School. The object of
this research is the kind of rewards and punishments on speaking skill and the
influence of rewards and punishments to the improvement of students‟ speaking skill.
To collect the data, the researcher uses some techniques such as observation,
questionnaire, interview and documentary. The data are processed through: editing,
coding, tabulating and interpreting. Then, the collected data are analyzed by using
statistical analysis and concluded inductively.
The result of this research shows that the kind of rewards and punishments of
tenth grade female students at SMA Banua Bilingual Boarding School on the
academic year 2015/2016, is divided into two categories namely, verbal (motivation,
compliment and recognition) and Non-verbal (gesture, touch (contact), prize and
scoring). While, the kind of punishments that teachers used on language teaching to
the improvement of student‟s speaking skill are divided into two categories, namely,
preventive (warning), and repressive (giving questions, make a sentence,
assignments, fine and memorizing vocabulary). Then, the influence of rewards and
punishments that the teachers used on language teaching to the improvement of
students‟ speaking skill in 5% is significant, with the level of significance is on 4.32.

Menguasai speaking merupakan salah satu aspek yang penting dalam belajar
Bahasa Inggris. Belajar speaking dalam bahasa inggris membutuhkan banyak kesempatan
pada praktek bahasa. SMA Banua Bilingual Boarding School menerapkan pemberian
penghargaan dan hukuman didalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini menarik untuk
mengetahui macam-macann penghargaan dan hukuman dan pengaruhnya dalam
pembelajaran bahasa untuk meningkatkan speaking siswa.
Rumusan masalah penelitian ini adalah: 1) Apa saja macam-macam penghargaan
dan hukuman yang digunakan oleh guru pada pembelajaran bahasa untuk meningkatkan
speaking siswa? 2) Bagaimana pengaruh penghargaan dan hukuman yang digunakan oleh
guru pada pembelajaran bahasa untuk meningkatkan speaking siswa?
Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui: 1) Macam-macam penghargaan
dan hukuman yang digunakan oleh guru pada pembelajaran bahasa untuk meningkatkan
speaking siswa? 2) Pengaruh penghargaan dan hukuman yang digunakan oleh guru pada
pembelajaran bahasa untuk meningkatkan speaking siswa.
Jumlah populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah 72 siswa. Sampel dalam penelitian
ini berjumlah 39 siswa yang berasal dari kelas sepuluh perempuan C dan D SMA Banua
Bilingual Boarding School. Objek penelitian ini adalah macam-macam penghargaan dan
hukuman pada speaking dan pengaruhnya dalam meningkatkan speaking siswa. Untuk
mengumpulkan data, penulis menggunakan beberapa tehnik seperti observasi, kuesioner,
wawancara dan dokumenter. Data yang diperoleh diproses melalui beberapa tahap yaitu
mengedit data mentah, mengelompokkan data, menghitung data dan menginterpretasi
data. Terakhir data dianalisa dengan pendekatan statistik yang disimpulkan secara induktif.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa macam-macam penghargaan dan
hukuman kelas sepuluh perempuan di SMA Banua Bilingual Boarding School tahun akademik
2015/2016 terbagi menjadi dua kategori yaitu, verbal (motivasi, pujian dan pengakuan)
non-verbal (gestur tubuh, menyentuh, hadiah dan nilai) sedangkan macam-macan hukuman
terbagi dua kategori yaitu, preventif seperti teguran. Dan represif seperti pemberian
pertanyaan dan membuat kalimat, pemberan tugas, denda dan menghafal kosa-kata.
Sedangkan pengaruh penghargaan dan hukuman pada kemapuan berbicara siswa pada
tingkat 5% adalah signifikan, dengan level signifikan 4.32.
