With the daffodils gone from our gardens,
let's look forward to our bulb sales in
July and August. But first, you know
the routine, the bulbs have to be dug, cured,
cleaned and bagged. June is the month for
digging and Sara and crew will be in Michigan in
John Reed's fields. Bulbs will, also, be dug at
Helen Link's this early summer. Cleaning and
bagging of the bulbs will begin at the IDS picnic
at Mary Milberger's home in July. So come to
the picnic for the delicious food, good
conversation and bulb prep.
The result of all this work is money for our
scholarship fund. I recently received a letter
from Kathy Wyss, Development Officer with the
department of Biology at Indiana University.
The IU scholarship was awarded to Joseph
Richardville, a senior studying the evolution of
sunflowers. Shortly after receiving the IU letter,
I was delighted to receive a letter from Joseph
thanking IDS for the scholarship money. The
money will pay his summer school tuition to
continue his research on sunflowers and enable

Info from Sara Kinne: Frank Nyikos has written a book, Hybridizing
A B C's, that is a must for interested gardeners that have been intimidated by the idea of making crosses and growing out their own seeds. It is a wonderful guide that uses hostas, daylilies, and daffodils as his plant examples You may order it through Amazon, or directly from Frank. (He has offered to autograph books bought directly from him!) Frank Nyikos, Walnut Grove Nursery, 8374 E State Rd 45,Unionville, IN 47468, 812-360-6242 Ed. Note: I looked it up on Amazon...you have to practically type the whole title before it pops up and it costs in the low $30's Buy it directly from Frank!!
DIGS!! Always need more hands helping with this project. The starting time is 7:30-8am..Sara wants to be in the field by 8 am. Bring your own sack lunch, water, insect repellant, and gloves and if you have a spade, that can't hurt...she has a few already. Contact Sara if you have any more questions. NOTE! She has a new e-mail:
Results from the 2011 IDS DAFFODIL SHOW There were 267 entries by 18 exhibitors with
472 stems. Here is a partial listing of IDS
Members who had winning cultivars: Mini Rose
category, Suzy Wert with her W1011 ( 9W-GYR);
Mini White category, Trena Trusty with her Pink
China (2W-P); Historic Award category, Sue
Luken with her Cantabile (9W-6YR, 1932);
Intermediate Award, Sue Luken with Pogo (3W-
GYO); Silver Ribbon category went to Sara Kinne
with her 13 Blue Ribbons. There were many
other blue ribbons that IDS members won. It
seems that our IDS participation has increased,
and that is a good sign!!
CROWN HILL CEMETERY DAFFODILS To see the daffodils next spring at Crown Hill Cemetery, go to Lot 67 for the Helen and Goethe Link monument. Nearby is the Persephone Statue. The Cemetery's website has a "link" (no pun intended) to pictures of this year's blooms!!
