withVoiceandPercussionManyfolksongsaroundtheworldarebasedonfolktales,oftenwiththeintentofexplainingphenomenaorofscaringchildrenintobehaving,(thinktheboogeyman,Dracula,oreven,theGrimm’sfairytales).OneofthestoriestoldinMexicoisaboutawitch,whomuchlikeDracula,sucksthebloodofhervictims.Thissong,“LaBruja”takesafirst-personperspectiveonthischaracterasthewitchsingsaboutflyingaroundat2:00inthemorningandsearchingforhervictims.“LaBruja,”composedandinterpretedbyJoseGutierrezandtheOchoabrothers,isatraditionalsonjarochofromVeracruz,Mexico.Theprimaryinstrumentinsonjarochomusicisthejarana,whichlookslikeasmall,skinnyguitar.Thejaranacomesinvarioussizes.Otherstringedinstrumentsincluderequintosandsometimesharps.Percussioninstrumentsincludethequijada(donkeyjawbone),sometimesarhumbabox,and,mostimportantly,dancing.Indeed,thedancersarethepercussionists,astheydanceastepknownaszapateadoonasmall,woodenplatformcalledatarima.
