The Early Years
• Between the ages of six and ten months, most infants get their “baby
teeth”.
• Incisors, usually come first.
• Teeth start coming in on either side all the way to the second molars.
• By the age of 3 all “baby teeth” should be present.

• There are two parts that make up the tooth
– Crown: sits above the gumline
– Root: is beneath the gumline
• There are four types of tissues that make up the tooth as well
– Enamel: durable and protect tooth from wear and tear
– Dentin: yellow bone-like material with nerve fibers
– Pulp: center of tooth
– Cementum: helps attach the tooth to the jawbone
Brushing
• Brush twice a day with a fluorinated toothpaste
• Its recommended to use a soft toothbrush with rounded bristle
• Replace toothbrush every three months.
• Use side-to-side strokes
• Clean your gums
• Clean molars by holding brush flat and using a back-and-forth motion

• Brushing will alone will not keep your teeth healthy, daily flossing is
recommended
• Daily flossing will help reduce the build-up of plaque
• There are two types of dental floss
– Waxed
– Unwaxed

• Braces are important because they help with teeth that are misaligned or
crooked
• Unnatural spaces or crooked teeth are harder to clean and are prone to
have more cravities
• Braces have three basic parts
– Brackets: which are attached to the teeth
– Bonding or Band: helps attach bracket to teeth
– Arch Wire: A thin wire that runs from bracket to bracket

• Eat a balanced diet
• See your dentist every six months for general check up and cleaning
• Chewing tobacco and cigarettes can cause oral cancer
• Excessive amounts of coffee, tea and red wine may stain your teeth
