• He has the treatment of a person– Received, resisted, and grieved, etc.
• He is a person with Divine Nature, “GOD”– Eternal, w/all knowledge, power, presence, etc.
• He had/has a 7 fold work– Teaching, reminding, convicting, advocate, edifying,
Confirming, interceding
Romans 8:9
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But, if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.

manner.

Representation is Common
Metonymy (pronounced /mɨˈtɒnɨmi/) is a
figure of speech used in rhetoric in which a thing or concept is not called by its own name, but by the name of something
intimately associated with that thing or
concept.
Representation is Common
But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the
Prophets; let them hear them.’
(Luke 16:29 ESV)
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus
the Lord, so walk in him,
(Colossians 2:6 ESV)
Representation is Common
This figure of speech (i.e., shepherd, v.2) Jesus used with them, but they
did not understand what he was saying to them. [7] So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to
you, I am the door of the sheep. (John 10:6-7 ESV)
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. (John 15:1 ESV)
Representation is Common
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it
and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” [27] And
he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them,
saying, “Drink of it, all of you, [28] for this is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
(Matthew 26:26-28 ESV)
Representation is Common with The Spirit also
• Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (John 3:5 ESV)
• Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, [26] that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, (Ephesians 5:25-26 ESV)
• he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, (Titus 3:5 ESV)
Representation is Common with The Spirit also
Is Acts 5:32 a true statement? • And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the
Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” (Acts 5:32 ESV)
Then Acts 8:15-17 is metonymy, I.e. figurative• …Peter and John, [15] who came down and
prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, [16] for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 8:14-16 ESV)
FACT: Most descriptions of the Spirit’s work are figurative.
• Acts 10:44- He fell
• Acts 10:45- He was poured
• Acts 11:15-17- a gift given
All of these refer to the same occasion!
FACT: Most descriptions of the Spirit’s work are figurative.
• Acts 1:5- baptized in…
• Acts 1:8- would come upon…
• Acts 2:4- filled with…
All of these refer to the same occasion!
FACT: Most descriptions of the Spirit’s work are figurative.
• 1Corinthians 12:13 - drink of…
• Romans 8:9 - indwells…
• Gal. 5:16, 18 - Walk by, led by
All of these refer to the same occasion!
HOW does the Spirit Indwell?
The Spirit dwells in YOU!
Romans 8:9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the
Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him. (Romans 8:9 ESV)
2 Corinthians 5:1For we know that if the
earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we
have a building from God….
2 Peter 1:13For I consider it right, as
long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir
you up by way of reminder, knowing that the laying aside of my
earthly dwelling is imminent…
HOW does the Spirit Indwell?
The Spirit dwells in YOU!Romans 8:9
YOU dwell in your body!2 Corinthians 5:1; 2 Pet. 1:13-14
The indwelling is not literal,
He is in the inner man Ephesians 3:14-16; 2 Cor. 4:16
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, [15] from whom every family in
heaven and on earth is named, [16] that according to the riches of his glory he may
grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith… (Ephesians 3:14-17 ESV)
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is
being renewed day by day.
(2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV)
Note How Jesus Uses the Term… John 17:21
Christ indwells the Father __ __
Father indwells Christ __ __
Believers indwells both __ __
Literally
Figuratively
…that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us,
so that the world may believe that you have sent me. (John 17:21 ESV)
To “dwell in” implies relationship
The Spirit was represented…• In the apostles by ALL the gifts• In early Christians by partial gifts• In us today by the word and the fruit
of the Spirit
…strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith… (Ephesians 3:16-17 ESV)
Shall We Claim a Personal, Literal, Actual Indwelling?
Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always
being ready to make a defense to
everyone who asks you to give an
account for the hope that is in you…
1 Peter 3:15
Shall We Claim a Personal, Literal, Actual Indwelling?
1 Peter 3:15
Need to explain HOW and WHY.
• Does He reveal something the word doesn’t?
• Answer questions the word doesn’t?
• Give guidance the word doesn’t?
Is the Spirit Working In Us Apart from the Word?
If so…..
Miracles?Signs?Visions?Voices?Demons?Burdens?Slayings?Laughter?
Is the Spirit Working In Us Apart from the Word?
If so…..
Feelings?Beliefs?Opinions?Convictions w/out scripture?Permissiveness?Personal desire?Agendas?
Is the Spirit Working In Us Apart from the Word?
If so…..
The world is in need of accurate Biblical truth.
Will you seek the Spirit,
receive the Spirit,
be led by the Spirit,
walk in the Spirit, etc ?
And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
(Acts 20:32 ESV)
