WATERLOO FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
PAGE 2 JUNE 12, 2015 THE HERALD
Dear Waterloo First family,
July is going to be an exciting month
for us and I can’t wait to see the
hope and joy that God has in store
for us! July is going to start with a
bang when we have a special
baseball service on July 5th. The
love of the game spans generations
and connects communities so I hope
you will join us on July 5th to learn
insights about the game and our
faith and leave feeling inspired to
say, “Put me in, coach!” If you have
a favorite team jersey or shirt, feel
free to wear it in worship too! On
July 9th, we will go to a Waterloo
Buck’s baseball game as a church
family. Tickets are only $4. Let the
church office know if you’d like to go
and how many tickets you’d like to
order. This baseball game will be a
great night to get to know one
another and a wonderful
opportunity for you to introduce a
friend to your church family. What
baseball fan could you invite to
worship with us in July?
July 12th is going to be another fun
Sunday in worship as we learn how
to see that God is all around us,
even in the Lego Movie! Everything
is awesome, but sometimes we
don’t feel awesome. When we find
ourselves living life according to the
world’s ways, it’s easy to just blend
in and be a face in the crowd, but
deep down, we all want to be
special, we want to know and live
into the unique purpose and passion
that God dreams for our lives. On
July 12th, you’ll see just how special
you are and how awesome things
can be when you follow God’s ways.
On Sunday night we will gather back
together to watch the Lego Movie in
the sanctuary. Pop and popcorn will
be provided and you can feel free to
bring snacks to share. The church
will open at 5pm and we will start
watching the movie at 5:30pm in
the sanctuary.
Our summer book club will be
meeting on July 18th at the
parsonage, 930 Sunrise Blvd, to
discuss the book, “What We Talk
About When We Talk About God.”
In this book, Rob Bell writes about
the God who is with us, for us, and
ahead of us, pulling us forward into
a better future—and ready to help
us live life to the fullest. If you’ve
ever wondered what it means to
follow the God that we meet in Christ, a God that isn’t mean, illogical or
primitive, than this book is for you.
On July 22nd, we will have a backyard bible BBQ for a Wednesday Night
at Nate’s. In the early church, worship happened around the table in
people’s homes where they would share a meal with one another as
they prayed for and encouraged each other. This July we’re going to
have a potluck and try to recreate the love and community that made
the early church what it is. I will be making hotdogs and brats, and you
can bring a side dish.
Finally, this fall we are
going to have a new
church shirt, made
especially for rally day,
Sunday, September 13th.
The red shirt says,
“Receive Love. Give Love.
Repeat. Waterloo First
UMC”
My dream for our church
in the coming years is
that we can all open our
hearts to the love that God has for us so that we can be the body of
Christ at work in the world that is strengthened by the Spirit to open our
hearts up even more. This shirt will be a reminder to us and to all that
see it that our faith is all about relationships. Through our faith, we
receive love from God and we give love to one another, and repeat as
often as we can. The final cost of the shirt will depend some on the
number of orders, and all proceeds will go to support the work of
“Change a Child’s Story” as we make sure every child in Waterloo has a
book to call their own.
Grace and Peace,
Nate Nims

Larry Kies &
Africa University
The Matthew 25 Committee will be holding a
special offering on Sunday, June 28 for our
missionary in Africa, Larry Kies. Larry is a
faculty member at Africa University.
Africa University is a United Methodist Church-related institution that is being
nurtured and funded by church members from all over the world. It is a
consequence of the growth of United Methodism on the African continent
and has its foundations in the history and legacy of the church. Africa
University opened in March 1992 as the first private, international university
in Zimbabwe.
Reflecting on his ministry, Mr. Kies shares, “I am in mission with the African
people as we manage a commercial-scale farm that demonstrates
appropriate farming methods. Students, even those not studying
agriculture, are exposed to sustainable practices, as many work part-time
on the farm to help pay their school fees. In teaching, I hope to reinforce in
students a Christian outlook toward farming and business, since many of
them will be the African leaders of the future. By so doing, I hope to obey
Jesus’ command, implicit in Matthew 25, to feed the hungry.”
The Matthew 25 Committee thanks you for your past support of Larry's
ministry and we hope you will consider a gift to Larry on June 28. Checks can
be made payback to the Church with "Advance #09572Z" in the memo
line. Thank you!

930 Sunset in Waterloo, at
11 am on July 18th to discuss:

Books can be purchased on-
line at Amazon or Barnes & Nobles in hard copy or digital, book store or
borrowed from the library. Let the church know if you need help purchasing
a book.
Women at the Well UMC will be the focus of
the Matthew 25 committee in July. There
will be a special offering. . At the current
time, the best way to support their work as a
church, and their Reentry Program, is with
monetary gifts. The Clothing Closet was
closed by the Iowa Correctional Institution
for Women some time ago, due to the new construction happening at the
facility. As a result, no new collections of materials are able to happen. We
have been given no date for the potential reopening of a Clothing Closet.
They are unable to accept any donations other than money at this time.
The Matthew 25 committee intends to take a field trip to worship with the
Women at the Well on a Thursday evening in December. Stay tuned for the
exact date, everyone will be welcomed. In the mean time, we can support
this ministry with our gifts.

Camp Musicmania, Here We Come!
A the time of this writing, we are poised and ready to take 24 children to Camp Musicmania!
Because of you, the members of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, and your willingness to
step out in faith, we have scholarship money and most important of all . . .TRANSPORTATION.
There are lots of reasons why we continue to provide music enrichment opportunities. The music
teacher at Orange Elementary in Waterloo, stated it this way in telling parents “WHY TEACH
MUSIC,”
Most importantly, Music is Art . . .
It allows us to express emotion-the thing that makes us most human.
We teach music not because we expect students to play/sing for all of their lives, not just so they
can relax and have fun, but so that they will be HUMAN, so that they recognize BEAUTY, so that
they feel a part of something larger than themselves . . .
Over 200 children will be participating in Camp Musicmania this year. They will be playing,
singing, relaxing and having fun. But more importantly, they will feel a part of something larger
than themselves. And as a result we, the members of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, will
also feel a part of something larger than ourselves.
By the time you read this Camp will be almost over. However, on Friday, June 19 you will have one
more opportunity to participate. You can be part of the audience! The K-3 performance will begin
at 2:00 and the 4-9 performance will begin at 3:30. The performance will take place in Russell Hall.
Parking is available by Gilchrist, Gallagher-Bluedorn, and Schindler Education Center (Latham
Lot). Come and see the results of our efforts. Be prepared to be amazed!

Join Nate at 6:30 pm on Wednesday,

bring a dish to share as we gather to pray for and encourage each
other to recreate the way it was in the early church.
KEEPERS OF THE FAITH MINISTRY– Sunday, July 15th
After being in many different singing groups, a Father and 3 sons had decided
to establish a singing ministry known as "The Taito Family" in the year 1997.
It was then, they began their journey in singing and ministering together as a
family. As the years went by, they felt the calling of God to move from Hawaii
to Washington State where they're continuing to minister as a family singing
group till this day.

Pastoral Counseling
Services Offered
Looking for a place to talk, to find hope or to help heal? I am partnering with
WFUMC to develop low cost counseling opportunities offered to members of
our congregation and our community. This is a very new endeavor that
hopefully will be growing and taking shape over the summer. I would like to
begin by extending an invitation to anyone who is looking for a safe and
confidential space to talk—or if you know of someone in need, please pass
the word along! An initial consultation can be scheduled by contacting the
church office, or me directly at 319-415-1528. I am also looking at a possible
offering of spirituality support groups. If you are interested in a particular
topic (grief/loss, forgiveness, divorce, etc.) please feel free to contact me with
a suggestion.
Who am I? I am currently a Certified Candidate for Ordination in the UMC,
Deacon Track. I received my seminary training from Duke Divinity School at
Duke University, and am currently a student at Candler School of Theology,
Emory University, working towards my Th.d in Pastoral Counseling. I had the
privilege of serving as a resident chaplain at the VA Medical Center in
Durham, NC, for one year, and have worked as a resident counselor towards
licensure at the Care and Counseling Center of Georgia the previous 3 years.
Areas of interest include: grief and loss, depression, addiction, spirituality, life
transitions, veteran concerns and PTSD, couples counseling, divorce, LGBT
and gender identity issues, adult ADHD, borderline and other personality
disorders, bi-polar and support counseling of other mental illnesses.
—Joey Ann Podhajsky, M.Div
The Walking School Bus project at Irving this spring proved to be a fun and
rewarding experience for adults and kids alike. On the one route we
piloted we usually had 3-5 youngsters and 2-3 adults "riding" the bus. This
was great healthy exercise for all of us and a wonderful chance to get to
know some of the Irving kids. One volunteer said she gained so much
when she started her day with this activity...she could tell a difference in
how much more energized and positive she felt when she got to work!
From another volunteer: . It always appeared to me the kids looked
forward to our "walk home"". It didn't take much time on my part and the
staff at the school were very friendly and appreciative as well. I'll
definitely do it again. Even makes me want to volunteer more at Irving.
Having a sense of purpose and "moving" are two of the Blue Zones keys to
a longer, healthier life. The Walking School Bus gives us both!
More adult volunteers are needed if we are to continue this project and
add more routes. We're going to work with the school to recruit parents
to join us, but we need more FUMC folks on our team!
You would only need to commit to a 15 minute walk starting at 7:55 am
and/or at 3:30 pm (no early dismissals next year). We'd like to start up in
the fall and "run the busses" so long as the weather is good.
If this is a possibility for you, please contact Sharon Miller at 232-7659.

Ad Team Minutes—May 21, 2015—Submitted by Kim Chapman, Secretary
Present: Joe Pryor, Jack Wright, Mark Sanborn, Pastor Nate, Phil Miller, Bev McCadam, Prudy Klinger, Lee Stonewall, Kim Chapman
The meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. by Chairman Jack Wright.
Review Minutes from April Meeting The April 16, 2015 meeting minutes were reviewed. Moved by Phil Miller, seconded by Prudy Klinger to accept the minutes as printed. Motion carried.
Pastor Nate reported the agreement with Cedar Valley’s Promise was signed Monday, May 18. Their insurance company is reviewing the agreement. Building keys were given to Diane Derifield and to the intern, Christine. One of their first tasks will be to survey the neighborhood by first talking to businesses, then to residents. They will be using the dinette Tuesdays and Thursdays to begin a small program and will gradually move in, but no official date for opening of The Hub has been set. The church committee who will meet quarterly to review the arrangements is Pastor Nate, the Trustee Chair, the Ad Team Chair and the Lay Leader.
Committee Reports
Joe Pryor, Trustees—the former treasurer office has been cleared out for use by Cedar Valley’s Promise. Phone lines have been disconnected in that office as CVP will be using their own phones. The trustees and ushers will work with the fire department on developing emergency plans, maybe including a fire drill. There was discussion of a defibrillator. The flat roofs are being worked on. The air conditioners in the offices have been replaced or repaired. Joe has been going through old document files and they are now sitting in the VonLackum Lounge to be shredded. Document shredding will be opened up for the congregation and personal papers. Bids have been received for replacing eleven windows ranging from $9,000 to $27,000. The Town and Country bid for $17,000 will be approved. Bids are also being taken for tuck-pointing. The office store room has been cleaned out with ten boxes of books to be given to Love Packages, an organization that will be shipping books to other countries. The parsonage flower bed has been removed and will be seeded; the plastic caps on the basement windows have been replaced; the refrigerator was removed from the garage; the side garage door was replaced.
Mark Sanborn, Finance—there are no documents from the accounting firm yet this month. April apportionments were paid. A financial review is being worked on. The weekly offerings is being reported each week in the worship bulletin and seems to be well-received.
Phil Miller, Music—the choir will be off for the summer and will return in
September.
Bev McCadam, Membership—another breakfast is scheduled around Thanksgiving time. July 9 will be the congregational date for a Waterloo Bucks baseball game. Visitation is going well. Transportation for the Music Mania students is being scheduled with a ride-along person needed and one driver for a 2:30 ride needed.
Prudy Klinger, At-large—122 meals were served last night at Dinner with Neighbors. There were 140 meals served Monday at Community Meals.
Lee Stonewall, UMW—the couch and chairs for Hartman Hall have been ordered. Some closets were cleaned out, along with UMW documents being cleaned out. Lee mentioned that all UMW minutes must be kept.
Presentation from Jaymee Glenn-Burns on the Healthy Church Initiative
The Healthy Church Initiative is an intentional leadership development process designed to enhance the skills of pastors and laity to lead growing, vibrant, spirit-filled churches. It is a leadership development process that keeps a church looking ahead three to five years. The three main components are continuous learning, consultation and coaching. There is a series of workshops where church leaders, both pastors and laity, participate in continuous learning opportunities. With the approval of the church council and pastor, the congregation may apply for an on-site consultation. At the close of the consultation, the congregation would receive up to five “prescriptions”, which would outline areas of ministry to address for the future growth and development of the church. If the church council votes to accept the prescriptions in full, they will receive up to two years of coaching support to pursue goals related to the prescriptions. The consultation fee is $300, and the coaching fee is $1800, which can be paid in $600 installments.
Pastor Nate commented the congregation has gone through a similar process with the What If? Project; that was before he was assigned to our church. We will share this information with the congregation for feedback.
Moved by Joe Pryor, seconded by Lee Stonewall to adjourn. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:08 p.m. The next meeting will be planned for August 20, unless there is a need for one before then.
