THE FIFE
ANDDRUM
1970
Standing in front of the first Enfield Academy in
1965, are its original teachers and three membersof the first Board of Trustees. From Left to Right
are Rom Parker, Treasurer and Attorney; Mrs.
Stella Edwards, fifth and sixth grade teacher; Mrs.
Bessie Hancock, fourth grade; Dr. S. N. Wood,Chairman of the Teachers’ Committee; Mrs. Marie
Mangum, second and third grades; Miss Garnet
Grizzard, first grade; and the Reverend A. C.
Morgan, Chairman of the Board.
The Enfield Academy opened on September 1,
1965, at Hardarwee School, near the town of Enfield,
with a faculty of four teachers and a student body of
seventy-one. It had been organized during the summer
by a group of interested citizens from Enfield, Darling-
ton, and Weldon. From the beginning, the Enfield
Academy was a pioneer in the field of modern private
schools. It was the first private school in North Caro-
lina to become chartered under the State’s Non-Profit
Corporation Act.
Dr. S. N. Wood was the first President, and Mrs.
Bessie Hancock served as the Headmistress the first
year. The Reverend A. C. Morgan was Chairman of the
first Board of Trustees. The Board was composed of
the following members: Walter E. Clement, Secretary;
Rom B. Parker, Treasurer and Attorney; Dr. S. N.
Wood, Chairman of the Teachers’ Committee; W. L.
Fleming, Chairman of the Purchasing Committee; J. H.
Norman, III, Chairman of the Book Committee; Alvin
A. Woodard, Chairman of Publicity and member of the
Finance Committee; and Paul Barringer, Aubrey Dick-
ens, Jesse Holford, and H. L. Johnson, members of the
Finance Committee.
From the beginning, the parents and friends of the
Enfield Academy showed a remarkable spirit and will-
ingness to work. During the first month, they formed
the Patrons of the Enfield Academy, which, under the
leadership of Mrs. James F. Hunter, first President,
became one of the pillars of the school. Parents and
friends scrubbed floors and desks, painted walls, made
curtains, hung light fixtures, put in restrooms, installed
central heating, and even built classrooms. To raise the
necessary money, bake sales, auctions, and festivals
were conducted. The students responded enthusiasti-
cally, and the joint effort was rewarded at the end of
the year when the School was granted State approval.
This academy spirit has both continued and increased
these five years. Maxville Burt Williams became Head-
master at the beginning of the second year, and under
his administration, the school has steadily grown until
it now has an enrollment of 425 students. It was at the
start of the second year that the territory served by the
Academy was expanded to include Scotland Neck.
They proved dedicated as the organizers, and in a
short time were serving on the Board of Trustees and as
Chairmen of important committees. C. C. Turner of
Scotland Neck succeeded the Reverend Morgan as
Chairman of the Board, and in turn, was succeeded by
Travis Uzzell, the present Chairman.
Subsequent members of the Board have been Wade
Dickens, John Branham, Kevin Viverette, L. W. Locke,
Leonard Bunting, Dr. David Stroud, and J. P. Alford.
During January, 1968, the Enfield Academy pur-
chased the Whitakers school property in Nash County
and during March of that year moved the school to the
new location. This move to Whitakers provided the
Academy with seventeen classrooms, a library, a labo-
ratory, a lunchroom, a first aid room, a teachers’
lounge, a Headmaster’s office, a gymnasium, and a
beautiful auditorium, which was subsequently named
Parker Auditorium in recognition of the services of
Rom B. Parker in acquiring the property.
During the summer of 1968, it became evident that
the enrollment of the Academy would double the next
fall, and that at least a part of the older portions of the
school would have to be renovated in order to accom-
modate the new students. The incredible spirit of the
Academy came through again. The summer was hot;
the job to be done was large, but hundreds of persons
spent untold hours working under the leadership of
Building Committee Chairman, Leo Bellamy. The li-
brary was organized and fully set up by Mrs. Rom
Parker, who volunteered her services as librarian. The
auditorium made debates and plays possible, and the
gymnasium and baseball field made sports competition
with other schools possible. The Carolina Academy
Conference was formed for basketball competition,
and the girls’ team immediately became champions.
The fourth year had hardly got underway before
applications from new students poured in. The Board
of Trustees with the assistance of the school treasurer,
E. M. Davis; Mrs. E. M. Davis, and Mrs. L. L. Allen,
immediately began processing applications. By the end
of the year, sufficient applications had been approved
to more than double the enrollment.
The hard summer of 1968 was nothing in compari-
son with the summer of ’69. Hundreds of people went
to work, and again the job was done. The fall of 1969
found the Academy with an enrollment of 425 stu-
dents and a faculty of sixteen well-trained and quali-
fied teachers. Students attending the Academy came
from fourteen cities and towns, six counties, and had
previously attended thirty-three schools. In this fifth
year of operation, the Academy proved successful with
its first graduating class, additional clubs and activities,
and its first annual, the Fife and Drum.

Dedication
Dear Parents and Patrons,
Since this is the first annual of the Enfield Academy, the Fife and Drum staff wanted
to dedicate it to someone who had really contributed the most toward making the school
the success it is today. The decision was very important, but impossible. The staff
immediately realized that no one person or even a few people had created the Enfield
Academy. Clear, yet still astounding memories came to our minds-memories of our
parents and friends enthusiastically building, scrubbing, and painting; creating miracle
after miracle for five long, hot summers to give us the school we are now proudly
attending. For the endless self-sacrifice, we can never hope to repay you. But in our own
way, we would like to show our deepest appreciation to you all.
Therefore, the staff voted unanimously that this, our first yearbook, was to be
dedicated to the parents and patrons, who are still continuing to build and improve our
school, in hope that you will realize our greatest gratitude for your efforts and generosity.
In deepest appreciation,
The Fife and Drum staff

The Patrons of Enfield Academy is composed of
both parents and friends of the Academy. Working
throughout the year, these dedicated supporters give
freely of their time and service in order to augment the
Academy. When school is not in session, they renovate
the buildings, making new classrooms, painting, install-
ing fixtures, and gathering needed supplies and teach-
ing aids. The P.E.A. also helps to finance the Academy
by holding bake sales, auctions, plays, and festivals.
Last April, the patrons turned actors and produced The
Womanless Wedding. This hilarious comedy was a big
success. Two of the largest and most successful of their
projects are the fall and spring festivals. This year the
fall festival made nearly seven thousand dollars. Ninety
percent of the profit is turned over to the Board of
Trustees for the operation of the school. The remaining
money is used for special P.E.A. projects. The patrons’
constant support and willingness to work whenever
needed has made the Enfield Academy a successful and
constantly growing school.

Student Council
The Student Council is composed of two students
from each homeroom. The officers are chosen by the
entire student body at the beginning of the year. This
year the Student Council brought about many re-
warding changes in the school. Besides taking care of
problems arising between students and the faculty,
the Student Council wrote a student constitution and
initiated a monitoring system, a tire drill system, and
a clean-up campaign. Their latest project has been the
opening of a student store to supply the students
with pencils, paper, and composition books.

“The purpose of this organization shall
be to promote the ideals of honesty, service,
and leadership among the high school stu-
dents of America, to reward good achieve-
ment and to encourage and assist students to
continue their education.” The Senior Beta
Club has certainly lived up to its purpose in
the year 1969-70. Not only did it sponsor
the school newspaper, the Student Crier, but
it also teamed-up with the Student Council
in a clean-up campaign. The Beta members
also made much progress in establishing Beta
Clubs in nearby academies, and it began a
Junior Beta Club at Enfield Academy to
promote scholarship and leadership in junior
high students. In April, the Club attended
the Beta Convention in Raleigh.

the Senior Beta Club. The Beta members review
applications for the various editors’ positions and
vote on them. Each editor then selects his own staff.
The Crier Staff is composed of sophomores, juniors,
and seniors. Working in their spare time, these stu-
dents put out an edition every two weeks. The
Student Crier contains students’ editorials, creative
writing, and reports on various social and sports
events. The paper is printed with the help of Coastal
Lumber Company, who donates the use of their
offset printing machine. The paper is an immense
success for the Beta Club and is a joy to the students.

“Last year When I was little
I could only count to three,
And never could remember
What the next number should be!
But now that I’ve grown bigger
1 know more than I did then,
For I have been in school a month—
And I can count to ten!” — Ford
“School days, school days.
Dear old golden rule days”
