OCTOBER
2
It’s the moment some have been waiting for with great anticipation and it’s the moment others are anticipating with fear (and some with a combination of fear and excitement). We are going to regather for worship beginning on October 4We are going to regather for worship beginning on October 4We are going to regather for worship beginning on October 4We are going to regather for worship beginning on October 4thththth at 10 a.m. at 10 a.m. at 10 a.m. at 10 a.m. That Sunday is World Communion Sunday, so we will commune with
the prepackaged elements. For those who will continue to worship remotely (via Facebook live and via F. M. Station 88.5 from the Parking Lot) we will encourage folks to use communion elements from home. There is a page describing the guidelines that we will be using in order to regather as safely as possible. Our hope is that we will provide safe and meaningful worship experiences for everyone. Having said that some things will be a bit different.
Here are a few of those things:
We won’t be participating in congregational singing, congregational responses or choir music until a later date when we learn that these things are safe.
We won’t be shaking hands, hugging or sitting close together.
The children will be remaining in pews with their families. Children’s Church and Sunday School will be starting up at a later date.
We won’t be gathering around the coffee pots at the Holy Joe café nor will we be sharing in food events for a while.
Ah, but there are some things we WILL be doing:
We will be gathering and seeing each other’s eyes smiling even if we can’t see our mouths and noses.
We will be blessed to experience music from the organ and piano, bell choir and some recorded special music.
With gratitude for technology we will be grateful for a worshiping community that is larger than what we can see.
Most of all, we will be worshiping God, giving thanks for all the blessings that are ours every day – while we continue to pay attention to our spiritual growth as a congregation and as individuals. In addition, we will seek to be faithful to serving our community and our world; reaching out in Christ’s love!
Please know that we will respect your decision as to whether you choose to gather with others in the sanc-tuary or continue to worship from home. Let us know if there are any way we can help you to connect with the worship service or support your spiritual life.
For those who are wondering about outside organizations and their use of the building, the plan is to allow them to use the building after we see have had a couple of weeks of worship. The targeted date for them will be October 19th. We will be making sure that the building is sanitized after each use.
I am extremely grateful for the Reopening Task force and the Consistory and their work. Our leaders have been prayerful and intentional in discerning how to move through the pandemic with care and hope. We are blessed to have their leadership.
Thank you, each one of you, for your continued faithfulness, flexibility and willingness to serve (even in new ways in uncharted territory)!!!
Blessings all! I am looking forward to this new season in our congregation and excited to see how God will work in us and through us.
Pastor Alice

Dear St. John’s UCC I would like to thank all of you. It means so much that you guys are support-ing my Girl Scout Silver Project. It means a lot to me that you guys did this. I want to say thank you for buying the shelving unit and the buckets for the prod-ucts to go in and also providing products to start up the hygiene closet. Thank you guys so much!!!!! Sincerely, Riley Hoey
Are you looking for a place to Serve? We need you. Yes, you. Many hands make light work and we need your Help. Please volunteer to give of your time and talent at one of our many opportunities for service within the church. Rather you have an hour once a week, or once a month you can explore opportunities to see if you find a fit that you enjoy.
We have Hospitality, Worship, Christian Education, Building and Grounds, Mission and Social Action, and Finance. You may choose to work only on a one-time project or discover you want to become a regular member of a team. So how will your gifts be of service? Please come and grow with us! Call the Church office to let us know you would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities and we will call you back!
To the Quilters of St. John’s,
Thanks you very much for the very nice, warm quilted throw for Fred. It is very cozy for him, and we thank you for thinking of him!
He is slowly getting stronger and we are taking one day at a time.
Blessings to you,
Fred & Tess Groover
Dear Friends on the Quilt Ministry Team,
Your fit of a quilt is so appreciated! Thank you very much. Alice brought it to me yesterday.
The quilt is exquisite!
I will treasure it!
Sincerely,
Dee Ledgerwood
Dear Members of St. John’s UCC,
Lately I’ve been receiving lots of cards, even from members who’ve never met me! I do miss coming to church. I just want to thank you since we’ve been under quarantine, when you get mail it’s a bright spot in my day. So I just want to say thank you! And also keep sending me the bulletin!
Ann Beasom

It is with a heavy heart I share the news of Rita Griffith’s resignation as Chancel Choir Director! After long thought, Rita has decided to move on to new adventures!
We appreciate all Rita has done for the Music Program at St. John’s for MANY MANY MANY MANY years, and will be sorely missed!
We at St. John’s wish Rita, and family best of luck that the future holds!
