• Sing 'The Alphabet Song' together. • Visit the library and borrow one of the many wonderful alphabet books available.
• Invite your child to form letters using all sorts of materials, such as glitter, glue, day,
craft sticks, pipe cleaners, foil, wallpaper, buttons, felt, foam trays ... be creative!
• Write partner letters on index cards, one per card. Hide the cards with small letters.
Give your child a card with a capital letter and invite him or her to find the matching
partner letter card. Then, reverse the game by hiding the capital letter cards.
• Repeat the following rhyme and ask your child to print a letter of the alphabet:
Print capital A.
Do you know how? Print it now. (Pause for your child to write the letter.} Wow! Wow! Wow! (Say this line together after your child has finished printing
the letter.) • Draw a hopscotch grid in soft dirt or with chalk on the footpath. In each section,
write a letter of the alphabet. With your child, take turns tossing a stone, hopping to the letter, and saying its name. Then, pick up the stone and hop back.
• Look for capital and small letters wherever you go with your child-to the supermarket, restaurant, post office, etc.
• Encourage your child to examine old newspapers and greeting cards, used magazines, and junk mail for a particular letter and use a marker to highlight it.
• Write the letters of the alphabet on tiny self-stick notes and have your child put the
letters in the correct order. • Praise your child's efforts ... and reward them with a sticker!
The Alphabet
Recognising and printing the letters of the alphabet is important to your child's progress in learning to read and write. Matching the capital and small letters and ordering the letters from A to Z are other steps on the road to reading success. The activities in this book and those suggested below are ways you can help your child develop these skills at home.

Reading for Understanding Helping your child develop reading comprehension skills is critical to his or her success in school. You can help your child develop these important skills through the lessons in this book and the suggestions below:
• Context Clues: When you hear a new word on the TV or the radio, ask your child to guess what it may mean, based on the context in which you heard it.
• Sequence: Cut up a three- or four¥panel newspaper cartoon. Ask your child to arrange the pictures in an order that makes sense. Have him or her retell the story using the due words first, next, then, and last or finally.
• Cause and Effect: While watching a video, pause it occasionally and ask, 'What happened?' and 'Why did that happen?'
• Draw·ng Conclusions: When your child misplaces something, prompt him or her with dues such as 'Where did you see it last?' or 'Who else might have used it?' Help him or her draw a conclusion about where the missing item may be now.
• Realism and fantasy: Give your child two signs-one labeled R for realistic and the other labeled F For fantastic. Next, suggest various realistic or fantastic events such as 'You will ride the bus to school tomorrow' or 'We will climb a giant beanstalk to the clouds tonight.' Have him or her hold up the appropriate sign to describe the event. Then, switch roles.
• Fact and Opinion: Occasionally, pause conversation at dinner and ask your child if what was just said was a fact or an opinion.
• Clas.sify: Ask your child to help with classifying jobs such as putting away the silverware in the appropriate parts of the silverware drawer or folding the clean clothes according to type of clothing.
• Compare and Contrast: On walks with your child, ask him or her to point out how specific houses, cars, trees, or gardens are alike and how they are different.
• Predict: Pause a video that you both are watching and ask your child to predict what might happen next. Then, verify the prediction.
• Main Idea and Supporting Details: Supply your child with simple main ideas, and ask him or her to add supporting details. For example, you might say, 'This movie was funny. Tell me what was funny about it.'
• Pra·ise your child's efforts ... and reward them with a sticker!

• Solving money problems: With your child, examine newspaper ads and flyers from supermarkets. At first, focus on items that cost less than one dollar, and ask your child to solve problems such as these: "How much will it cost to buy both a can of peas and a pound of bananas?" and "How much change will you get from a dollar if you buy the can of peas and pound of bananas?"
• Recognizing the value of coins: Give your child frequent opportunities to count money. When shopping or eating out show your child the change you receive after purchases and have him or her count the coins.
• Telling time to the hour, half hour, five minutes: At home and in public places (such as stores or waiting rooms), invite your child to tell you the time by reading nearby clocks, both digital and analog. (Analog clocks have hands.) Draw clock faces to show the time of favorite TV shows, dinner time, and similar events. Encourage your child to compare available clocks to the drawings so as not to miss the events.
• Understanding the calendar: Keep a calendar handy and give your child opportunities to refer to it. Together, jot down upcoming events and holidays. Then refer to the calendar as you discuss weekly schedules.
Time and Money Skills involving time and money are essential for children to gain independence in daily activities and achieve success in mathematics in school. You can help your child develop these important skills through the lessons in this book and the suggestions below.

• Help your child make a list of words that he or she can read independently. Use a large sheet of poper so you can add new words to it each day. Hang the list in a handy spot so your child can practice reading the words to you often.
• Play 'What's Cooking?' Help your child read the labels on food products. Ask him or her to name the vowel sound in each word. For example, eggs begins with short e.
• Have your child name each family member. Ask your child what letter each name begins with.
•Go on an alphabet hunt. Help your child find every letter of the alphabet in books, magazines, and newspapers in your home.
Helping your child learn how to recognise letters and sounds is an important first step in teaching him or her how to read. Once your child understands that the sounds in words can be represented with letters, he or she will be able to begin to sound out and read words. It is also important for your child to practice writing letters and words. Correctly forming letters and learning how to spell phonetic words will give your child a solid skill foundation. Here are some suggestions for helping your child learn how to read, write, and spell.
