THE CROSS CONNECTION November 6, 2016
Love – Grow – Serve
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK ~ ~ ~
This year has slipped through my fingers. I can’t believe that November is upon us.
November is the beginning of the holiday season; celebrations with friends and family.
Traditions that remind us who we are and how blessed our lives are by God.
I heard something on TV last week which suggested that statistically a day in
October was the least that the average American will weigh for the remainder of the
year. So from now until December, statistically speaking, we will be increasingly carrying
more weight. At the same time, I’m reading our Bible Study book, “Forgiveness,” by
Adam Hamilton. Hamilton talks about the weight of carrying around regret, sin and
bitterness; all things that can be relieved through asking for and accepting forgiveness
from God and one another.
I’m not a fan of either kind of weight in my life, physical or spiritual. God does not
desire for us to carry around the weight of sin, bitterness, or regret. In fact, God gave his
most precious gift that we could be forgiven . . . . weightless.
As we embark on the season of thanksgiving, I am so very thankful that God loves
us so much that God sent Jesus to lift our burden, forgive our sins and lighten our load.
When we fully embrace God’s love and forgiveness, we are living into the grace of God.
Accepting the gift of forgiveness blesses God and heals our souls. As an act of
thanksgiving, may you accept the beautiful gift of God’s forgiveness and walk through
life carrying less weight and more grace.
Blessings,
Pastor Mandy
Luke 1:67 John's father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, 68 "Bless the Lord God of Israel because he has come to help and has delivered his people. 69 He has raised up a mighty savior for us in his servant David's house, 70 just as he said through the mouths of his holy prophets long ago. 71 He has brought salvation from our enemies and from the power of all those who hate us. 72 He has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and remembered his holy covenant, 73 the solemn pledge he made to our ancestor Abraham. He has granted 74 that we would be rescued from the power of our enemies so that we could serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness in God's eyes, for as long as we live. 76 You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way. 77 You will tell his people how to be saved through the forgiveness of their sins. 78 Because of our God's deep compassion, the dawn from heaven will break upon us, 79 to give light to those who are sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide us on the path of peace." Breast Cancer Awareness
Last month was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I didn’t address it
because it was also Drug Abuse Prevention Month. So, we at Forest Hill
are going to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness a month late – sorry!
Breast cancer is the number 2 cancer killer of women. 1 in 8 women will
be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It is also one of the
most treatable cancers if caught early enough, so therefore, early detection is the key!
Getting a yearly mammogram is only part of the game plan. Monthly self-breast exams are really the
key. Being self-aware, knowing your own body, and finding changes is the best early detection
strategy. It is important to learn how to do a proper self-exam.
Using the pads of your index, middle and ring fingers, start at your arm pit and apply light pressure in a
circular motion, with the second circle, use medium pressure, and the third circle use deep pressure
(you want to be sure to feel all the layers of the breast tissue). Move your fingers down about an inch
and repeat your 3 circles with your 3 pressures. In this manner, you will move down to the bottom of
your breast then all the way up to your collar bone. Make your way across your entire breast in this
manner, going up and down, 3 little circles at each spot. The best time to do your exam is the week
after your period. You should also look at your breasts in a mirror to know what normal looks like for
you.
The more you do it, you will learn about all the normal ridges and bumps that are in your breast. Once
you know what normal feels like, it is easier to detect what is abnormal. If you do find something
abnormal, report it to your doctor right away so that imaging can be done. If you don’t have insurance,
there is plenty of assistance available to help cover the costs associated with screening.
Oh, and guys, it won’t hurt for you to do this as well – men can get breast cancer too!

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS ON SUNDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 6 AT 2:00 A.M. TURN YOUR CLOCKS BACK 1 HOUR!!
Praying Together - St. Paul encourages us saying, “Pray always. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.” (Ephesians 6:18). Join us on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am at Punchy’s Diner (550 Concord Pkwy. N.). We’ll gather in the private dining area for a brief morning devotion and to pray for Forest Hill, for the needs of our community and the world, and for one another. Come for prayer, come for breakfast, come for both. All are welcome!
All Saints Sunday – November 6 in both the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services, we will remember the Saints that have gone on before us. Each member of our church who has died in the past year will be named, and each of us will have a chance to remember our own loved ones who have joined the church triumphant. This is always a special day in the life of our church as we remember those who have been examples of the faith for us.
SENIORS GROUP – ARE YOU INTERESTED??? How would you like to get together once in a while with other seniors? If you would like more information, please call Carolyn Baker at 704-782-6631. We have had some interest, so look for information about our upcoming organizational meeting soon!!
