Communion, Participation and Mission!
The weekend of October 23 and 24 we will be celebrating, in the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Opening
Celebration of the Preparation Process for the Synod of Bishops at Rome in 2023.
What is a Synod? The word “synod” comes from the Greek synodos, meaning “an assembly.” Synods in the
Catholic Church generally feature an assembly of bishops, who come together to assist the Holy Father in
addressing the needs of the Church. Initially, many of these synods were held locally, within various regions
of the world, to deal with local issues and concerns. Synods of
this type date back to the 4th century.
What is different about this Synod? Preparations for the
synod begin now and will culminate in the bishops of the
world gathering in Synod at Rome in 2023. The theme of this
synod is “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation
and Mission.” By convening the Synod, Pope Francis invites
the entire Church, not only bishops, to reflect on this theme
that is decisive for its life and mission: “It is precisely this path
of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third
millennium.” Following in the wake of the “renewal” of the
Church proposed by the Second Vatican Council, this
“journeying together” is both a gift and a task. The objective
of the current Synod is to listen, as the entire people of God,
to what the Holy Spirit is saying to the Church…the whole synod process aims at fostering a lived
experience of discernment, participation and co-responsibility. Synods are a time to dream and “spend time
with the future.” We are encouraged to express an innovative outlook; to be inclusive; to keep an open
mind; to listen to each and every one; to capture an understanding of journeying together; and to value and
involve the role and vocation of each member of the Body of Christ.
How are we going to celebrate the Opening of the Preparation Process for the Synod here at St.
Athanasius? Cardinal Cupich has given permission for all parishes to use the Mass for a Council or a Synod
at Masses on October 23 and 24 (Masses for Various Needs and Occasions, I. For the Church, 5. For a
Council or a Synod). When this Mass is celebrated, red vestments are to be worn. The readings for the 30th
Sunday of Ordinary Time meld well with the celebration of the opening of the synodal process as we also
celebrate Mission Sunday. We will be praying the Synod Prayer. Every session of the Second Vatican
Council began with the prayer Adsumus Sancte Spiritus. The first word of the original Latin meaning, “We
stand before You, Holy Spirit,” which has been historically used at councils, synods and other church
gatherings for hundreds of years, and is attributed to Saint Isidore of Seville (c. 560 - 4 April 636). This
prayer invites the Holy Spirit to be at work in us so that we may be a community and a people of grace.
Let us continue praying that all the faithful people may be strengthened and renewed by the Holy Spirit, as
we begin to prepare for the Synod of Bishops.
In the Lord’s Joy,
Fr. Hernan

The Furman Family: Eric, Kellie, Francie, Crosley & Xavier
share their family memories....
Years at St. A’s: 1977 to present
Years as parishioners: 2016-present
How did you join the parish? When we moved to Evanston, we tried a
few area Catholic churches. Then Kellie learned that her coworker’s brother and family were St. A’s
parishioners and loved it. That was Adam and Beth McCostlin, and their enthusiasm for St. A’s was
undeniable. Just about the same time, we ran into Melissa and Chris Harvey and family at Little Kickers
soccer. As it turned out, Melissa and Eric grew up in the same hometown. The Harveys made St. A’s sound
like such a close-knit community, and were so welcoming, that we began attending Sunday Mass. The
McCostlins and the Harveys were right—St. A’s felt like home to us, and we appreciate it more with every
passing Sunday, every family Baptism, every school celebration.
What are some of your favorite memories of St. Athanasius school? Due to Covid, we will never forget
our first year at St. Athanasius school, which was also Francie’s kindergarten year. The way Fr. Hernan, Mrs.
McClay and our teachers led us through all the uncertainty, the whole community rowed together toward our
goals, and we ended with a real sense of achievement. What a first year! The big highlight was bringing home
the trophy for Virtual Family Trivia Night. A real trophy!

October 17, 2021 Mark 10:35-45
It’s rare that the Sunday Gospel reflects the secular landscape but when it does it can be startling. It seems that the
closer we get to next month’s mid-term elections the more negative the campaign is becoming. Instead of telling us
about the positive things they hope to accomplish and why we should vote for them, many of the candidates are
focusing their attention on how bad their opponents are and why we should not vote for them.
“Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” James and John sound a lot like
someone seeking elective office – like Olivia S., for instance. Olivia is running for office because she feels obligated to
stand up for what is good and right. Her record at the local level is impeccable and, at least up until now, she has
managed to avoid running any negative ads. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for her opponent. A naïve first-time
candidate, Olivia believed the reporters when they told her that what she was saying would remain ‘off-the-record’, and
now she finds her words are being used against her.
Olivia really does want to sit on God’s right hand, to be an agent of God’s justice and an instrument of God’s peace,
but she’s beginning to wonder if she hasn’t asked for more than she can handle. Can she drink of the cup of slandered
innocence? Is she willing to be baptized in the fire of a mudslinging campaign?
Olivia has no desire to make her “authority felt.” She only accepted the invitation to seek political office because she
believed it offered her an opportunity to serve. But it’s not been an easy race and she’s beginning to wonder if she really
has what it takes. When we cast our ballot next month will our vote support Olivia’s decision to run? Will we exercise
our responsibility to choose someone based on the good they stand for? Or will we take the ads at face value and
choose a candidate because they’re not as bad as they tell us their opponent is?
