After working with The Boeing Company on special projects
for a number of years, in 2014 Bremont announced an exclusive
collaboration to develop a new line of mechanical timepieces.
The partnership combines Boeing’s extraordinary expertise
in advanced material technology with Bremont’s innovative
track record in chronometer manufacture. It will also help to
commemorate the aerospace company’s 100th anniversary in 2016.
Founded in 1916, Boeing is one of the world’s largest aircraft
manufacturers. The second-largest aerospace and defence
contractor and the US’s largest exporter. With a past dating back
nearly 100 years, the Chicago-based giant’s archives read like a
history of aviation.
Significant amounts of joint research has taken place at the
Advanced Material Research Centre (AMRC) in Sheffield which is
a joint venture between the University of Sheffield and Boeing.
This has led to the development of new metals like Custom 465®
Stainless, a premium melted alloy capable of superior strength,
hardness and corrosion, being used in the Bremont Boeing range.
Custom 465® Stainless is the strongest of all commercially
available stainless alloys. It was developed in response to
the demands from the aerospace industry for materials that
will keep aircraft flying for 30 years or more with minimum
maintenance. It has been used for structural components such as
flap tracks, actuators, engine mounts, and landing-gear hardware.
This will be the first time Custom 465® Stainless has been used
in the watch industry.

BREMONT BOEING WATCH LINE SET TO TAKE OFF AT BASEL 2014
Bremont Watch Company confirms that the new Boeing watch
range, launching at Basel 2014, will comprise two new models:
the Bremont Boeing Model 1 and the Bremont Boeing Model 247.
The new line is the result of extensive access to the aerospace
company’s material and manufacturing technology at the
Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Sheffield,
UK, as well as to its historical and archival materials. The watches
will exclusively use Boeing aeroplane materials that have never
before been incorporated in watch manufacture.
Named after the first aircraft built by Boeing, known as
the B&W, the Bremont Boeing Model 1 is a unique timepiece
that reflects Boeing’s extensive experience in advanced material
research. One version is manufactured from Custom 465®
Stainless Steel. This double vacuum-melted, age-hardenable alloy
was developed for the aerospace industry for superior strength,
hardness and corrosion resistance. A second version uses Boeing
aviation-grade Ti-64 titanium for the case construction.
Both feature the unique Bremont Trip-Tick® case construction
with integrated crown guard. Their beautifully decorated BE-36AE
movements are suspended in Boeing blue decorated steel and
rubber anti-shock mounts exposed for all to see through the
crystal case backs.
The Bremont Boeing Model 247 represents the debut
chronograph in the collaboration. Like the Bremont Boeing Model
1, two versions are available: the first is built from exceptionally
tough Custom 465® Stainless Steel, while the second has been
manufactured from Boeing aviation-grade titanium. The hardened
case incorporates screw down crowns and chrono pushers,
together with an exhibition sapphire crystal case back.
All Bremont Boeing cases will be made in-house in the
UK. The hardness of the Custom 465® Stainless Steel makes it
particularly demanding to machine precision parts. In conjunction
with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Bremont has
developed new machining techniques to meet the challenge.
About Boeing: Boeing is the world’s leading aerospace company

THE NEW TITANIUM TERRA NOVA BREAKS THE ICE WITH BEN SAUNDERS ON WORLD-FIRST ANTARCTIC EXPEDITIONIn early 2014, renowned British polar explorer Ben Saunders and
his team mate Tarka L’Herpiniere rewrote history with their world
record-breaking Antarctic expedition. One of the most ambitious
polar expeditions in a century, it marked the first time Captain
Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova expedition had ever
been completed. For four months, the pair trekked 1,795 miles
across Antarctica’s inhospitable landscape on a return journey
from Scott’s Terra Nova Hut on the north shore of Ross Island to
the South Pole. In doing so, they also set the world record for
the longest polar journey on foot. Walking an average of 17 miles
daily in temperatures as low as -46°C, they hauled their own
supplies by sled - a weight of almost 200kg. The Scott Expedition
has undoubtedly pushed the limits of physical and mental
fortitude, resetting the bar for polar expeditions of the future.
On the outside of their polar jackets the two polar
explorers wore their new Bremont Terra Nova chronometers. The
watches were to become an essential tool in their navigation.
Far too cold for any type of battery operated device, the light
titanium Supermarine with GMT functionality and specially
oiled mechanical movement became indispensable. Using the
chronometer to measure longitude, the watch could also be
used to point to the South Pole using the GMT watch hand and
the sun.
Seeing a clear alignment between a unique British
expedition and a British watch company that was keen to break
boundaries in terms of design and durability, Ben has been
working with Bremont since 2010 and particularly in the run up
to his Scott’s expedition. The Limited Edition Terra Nova was
the result of numerous collaborative meetings during which
Ben stressed one crucial element from his vast experience, a
personal fixation of any polar explorer: the weight. The result
is an incredibly lightweight custom mechanical watch with no
compromise on performance whatsoever. Manufactured from
aircraft-grade titanium to reduce weight and increase strength,
the watch is also water resistant up to 500m. The mechanical
movement incorporates a special vibration mount with the
ability to protect against extreme shocks and also serve as a
thermal insulator. The mechanical automatic movement was
also tested to -40°C to ensure it could withstand such extreme
temperatures: quartz counterparts would simply stop functioning
at this level.
Ben Saunders said: “Having the opportunity to test the next
generation of watches on our journey has been fantastic. Most
impressive is the weight of the Terra Nova. The titanium provides
unrivalled durability without the added weight associated with
so many other watches. This was an absolutely crucial aspect of
the development. When you take on an endurance challenge like
the Scott Expedition, every gram counts.”
Giles English, Bremont Co-Founder said: “It has been superb
working with Ben on this project. It is wonderful to think that
Captain Scott used mechanical watches on his trip and 100
years later a mechanical watch remains the best tool for such
extreme conditions.”
About Captain Scott: Iconic British explorer Captain Robert
Falcon Scott led the first British team to reach the South Pole
on 17th January 1912. He died along with the last of his team,
Dr Edward Wilson and Lieutenant Henry (“Birdie”) Bowers,
on 29th March 1912 on the return journey of the fateful Terra
Nova expedition. They had covered almost 1,600 miles - a feat
unsurpassed in over 100 years, until now.
ABOUT BEN SAUNDERS...Ben Saunders is a pioneering polar explorer. He has recently broken the record for the longest polar journey on foot in history (by almost 400 miles) and is one of only three people in history to have skied solo to the North Pole (a challenge Reinhold Messner called “ten times as dangerous as Everest”). At the age of 26, Ben was the youngest to complete this by more than ten years, in conditions NASA called “the worst since records began”.
Ben spent four months walking and climbing in the Nepalese Himalayas aged 19, going on to work as an instructor at the John Ridgway School of Adventure in the Scottish Highlands, once billed as “the UK’s toughest management training school”. Ben has raced mountain bikes on and off-road at national level. He has run seven marathons and three ultra-marathons, including an attempt at the inaugural 250-mile Thames Ring Ultra in summer 2009. He is an Ambassador for The Prince’s Trust, a Patron of the British Exploring Society, an honorary member of the Cordon Rouge Club, a Global Ambassador for Land Rover, an ambassador for Intel, a Fellow of the British American Project, and supports the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Orchid Cancer Appeal.
During his record-breaking 1,795 mile trek Ben relied heavily on his Bremont Terra Nova for accurate time-keeping and navigation.

BREMONT EXPANDS ITS MARTIN-BAKER RANGE WITH THE EAGERLY ANTICIPATED MBIII
Martin-Baker is a British aviation company responsible for
supplying 70% of the world’s air-forces with fighter ejection
seat technology. They first approached Bremont to create the
definitive aviation watch in 2007/08. More than simply putting
a logo on an existing model, the watch had to withstand the
same rigorous testing programme as the ejector seats themselves.
Two years later, the Bremont MB range (MBI & MBII) was born.
The limited edition Bremont MBI was solely for pilots who had
ejected from an aircraft using a Martin-Baker seat. This rather
select group includes US congressmen and senators, CEOs of
leading FTSE and Dow companies, and the chiefs of six air forces
around the world (the one exception is a major Hollywood star
who tracked down and persuaded an ejectee to buy a watch
on his behalf). While the MBI is reserved for the few, the MBII is
available to all and has become a Bremont best seller. Nobody
quite expected the impact it would have on the aviation watch
world. Its unique case design, distinct coloured barrel, and
ground-breaking technical features made it an instant favourite
among aviators in the military and civilian worlds alike.
The introduction of a new GMT movement able to
simultaneously keep the time in two time zones takes this
heritage one step further. Yet the MBIII very much retains the
classic DNA that has made the MB a must-have for any serious
collector. It has been put through the same intensive, extensive
testing schedule that includes shock, vibration, temperature
extremes, and salt-fog tests:
Along with the Terra Nova this is the first time that Bremont
has introduced a non-chronograph GMT movement into any of its
watches and to further differentiate it from the MBII is introducing
a bronze aluminium barrel as an option to the watch (in addition
to anthracite and the iconic orange). The bronze was specifically
inspired by a number of military watches Bremont has done in the
past based on the anti-reflective coating used on their cockpit
canopies. As with the original MB watches, in terms of design the
MBIII is very much inspired by the MB ejection seats themselves,
featuring characteristics such as the knurled effect on the barrel
matching components on the seat and the yellow and black loop
at the end of the second hand which is a direct reference to the
ejection pull handle.
Giles English, Bremont Co-Founder said: “It has been a
wonderful relationship with Martin-Baker over the years. We have
always been proud to work with such an amazing British business.
When Nick and I sat down to design the MBIII we were very
conscious not to make a drastic change and lose the MBII DNA.
I think we have accomplished this as we have evolved the watch
and made the addition of the GMT function.”
Martin-Baker’s Director of Business Development and
Marketing, Andrew Martin said: “We greatly respect what
Bremont has achieved so far. I truly believe that the MBII has
won its place as one of the iconic mechanical watches of the
21st century. Our life-saving ejection seats are tested to the
absolute limit, so the creation of such a unique timepiece that
can withstand the same rigorous testing is a clear demonstration
of the quality and craftsmanship involved. The MBIII is the next
chapter in the story and one we are all very proud of.”
About Martin-Baker: With facilities spanning the globe,
Martin-Baker has established an extensive range of unique,
specialist engineering capabilities. They ensure that all Martin-
Baker products are of the highest quality and reliability and will
always perform as designed – first time, every time.
Past and continued success has defined the iconic British
company as the number one choice for over 88 air forces
throughout the world, fitted to over 80 aircraft types. The
equipment may represent a crew member’s last chance to survive
and there can be no compromise. Every facet of the safety system
must work perfectly to safeguard a precious life.
Furthermore, aircrew members must reach the ground
uninjured, especially in a hostile environment, if they are to
have the best possible chance of survival. This understanding is
reinforced by 60 years of experience dating back to the first live
ejection test in 1946 and the first life saved in 1949. So it comes
as no surprise that Martin-Baker is the only company worldwide
able to offer a fully-integrated escape system that satisfies the
very latest in pilot operational capability and safety standards.
Martin-Baker has saved over 7,438 aircrew lives for more than
93 Air Forces.
