grain or in locally-produced bev-
erages. Discussions are also
underway to sign additional arti-
sans and local producers includ-
ing a coffee roaster, cheese mak-
er, special event caterer, and a
perfumery.
Lazarus Properties closed on the
property on July 11th, and has
cleaned up the grounds and park-
ing areas which were heavily
overgrown. Roof repairs and
other infrastructure improve-
ments are now underway. Build-
out for the resident businesses
will be commencing shortly.
In late August, Old First Ward
artist Chris Kameck completed a
nearly life-sized mural of an ErieRailroad steam locomotive on
the outside of the historic struc-
ture. Long known to locals as
The Barrel Factory, the 45000
SF, multi-level brick structure
housed the Quaker City Cooper-
age Company for many decades
starting in 1903.
Lakeward Spirits will be
using as their website

Facebook page.
The Barrel Factory extends
to them a very warm wel-
come!
A new micro-distillery is
coming to The Barrel Facto-
ry in Buffalo with the launch-
ing of Lakeward Spirits.
The start-up will serve as an
anchor business when it begins
operations at the historic, 110-
year old landmark currently un-
dergoing a renaissance in the
citys Old First Ward.
Lakeward Spirits will specialize in
making high-quality, artisanal
whiskeys, gins, and infusions from
scratch, using local New York
State farm products. Distillery
operations are expected to com-
mence this winter. The new
businesss federal distillers li-
cense has been approved.
Lakeward Spirits will be the sec-
ond resident business in TheBarrel Factory, joining the re-
cently announced start-up,
Queen City Malting. Bruce
Mack, Treasurer of Lazarus Prop-
erties, which is redeveloping the
historic factory building, is excit-
ed about the announcement.
Lakeward Spirits represents a
huge step forward in achieving
our vision for The Barrel Facto-
ry, he said.
Adam Bystran, Chief of Distillery
Operations for Lakeward Spirits,
noted, Were excited to be a
player in the re-birth of Buffalos
Old First Ward, as well as in the
growing brewing-distilling culture
here. With a maltster in-house,
whiskey lovers will be able to
watch our process from grain to
glass.
In addition to Lakeward Spirits
and Queen City Malting, Lazarus
Properties is in talks with several
breweries interested in expand-
ing their operations and localpresence. The co-location of
maltsters, distillers, and brewers
in the same building will certainly
make The Barrel Factory a desti-
nation for anyone interested in

Historical Highlights!
Malting returns to Buffalo at The Barrel Factory!A once-iconic industry is
returning to Buffalo this
fall with the launching of
Queen City Malting!
The start-up will be Buffalos
first active maltster in decades
when it begins operation at
The Barrel Factory, a 110-year
old landmark currently under-
going redevelopment in the
citys Old First Ward.
Maltsters prepare grains, like
barley, wheat, and oats, so that
they can be used by breweries
and distilleries to make beer
and spirits. With the explosive
growth of new breweries and
distilleries in the city and re-
gion, there is certainly a rapidly
increasing demand for malt.
Queen City Maltings focus will
be on using top quality, sus-tainable grains from local New
York State farms.
Queen City Malting will be the
first resident business in the
Barrel Factory. Steve Bystran,
Managing Member of Lazarus
Properties, which is redevelop-
ing the historic factory build-
ing, is thrilled about the an-
nouncement. Queen City
Malting represents another
important return to the grain-
based heritage here in Buffalo
and its Old First Ward, he
said.
Bob Patterson of Queen City
Malting noted, Queen City
Malting is proud to continue
the great tradition of craft
malting grains to help rediscov-
er the great brewing history of
Buffalo.

famous, iconic tavern, Gene
McCarthy's, and its Old First Ward
Brewery, and just yards from the
new Mutual Riverfront Park (and

even more activity and excitement
to a great, historic Buffalo neigh-
borhood!
Other nearby neighbors include

The Barrel Factory has learned that
critical repairs are needed to fix
structural damage to Our Lady of
Perpetual Church, 115 O'Connell
Ave. in Buffalo. While insurance
will cover most of the costs, the
parish and community will have to
raise the rest. OLPH will be con-
centrating on fundraisers and dona-tions in order to meet the goal of
$60,000.
This work MUST be completed in
order to keep the historic church
(1897) open.
