A NEW DAY

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) made great strides in realizing the goals of the mission and vision adopted in 2018 . One of the most significant indicators of the Museum’s renewed commitment to social equity this year was the presentation of Mark Bradford: Tomorrow Is Another Day . This extraordinary exhibition that showed how one of the greatest artists of our time has redefined painting and embraced social abstraction through his belief in art’s ability to expose contradictory histories and inspire action . This shift in focus was also realized with the loan of a glowing neon art installation by Bahamian-born artist Tavares Strachan . Placed on the façade of the historic building, In broad daylight (2018) appeared to signal the illumination of underrepresented art and artists, echo the concerns of Black Lives Matter activists, and challenge the status quo for encyclopedic museums .

The BMA's bold initiative to acquire and present a nationally significant collection of works by women and artists of color continued at a rapid pace . Among the numerous acquisitions made this year were important works by Emma Amos, Geta Brătescu, David Driskell, Melvin Edwards, Charles Gaines, Ana Mendieta, Mary Lovelace O’Neal, Ebony G. Patterson, Elle Pérez, Faith Ringgold, and Stephen Towns .

Two transformative endowment gifts provided substantial funding to secure leadership of the BMA’s artistic program and create more powerful art experiences at the Museum . We are honored to have one of the few curatorial positions in the U .S . named for an African American couple—The Eddie C. and C. Sylvia Brown Chief Curator—currently held by Dr. Asma Naeem. We are also proud to host the first named public art commission for a U.S. museum—the Robert E. Meyerhoff and Rheda Becker Biennial Commission. This initiative, debuting in fall 2019, will transform the BMA’s East Lobby every two years and includes a parallel fellowship to cultivate aspiring curators and help to add people from underrepresented backgrounds in the museum field.

In addition to serving thousands of students and adults on site, the BMA deepened its engagement with underserved communities in Baltimore this year through a partnership with the Greenmount West Community Center and BMA Outpost . These multiyear initiatives significantly expanded the Museum’s impact beyond its walls. We look forward to building on these accomplishments, and much more, in the years ahead .

BMA MISSION

The Baltimore Museum of Art connects art to Baltimore and Baltimore to the world, embodying a commitment to artistic excellence and social equity in every decision from art presentation, interpretation, and collecting, to the composition of our Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers—creating a Museum welcoming to all.

BMA VISION

Over 100 years ago, The Baltimore Museum of Art was founded on the belief that access to art and ideas is integral to a vibrant and healthy civic life . This belief is at the heart of the BMA and remains our core value .

The BMA has long focused on acquiring the art of the present moment, while maintaining and deepening a historic collection made relevant through vigorous development and reinterpretation in all collecting areas . Through the courageous and risk-taking vision of previous Museum leaders, the BMA assembled and presented one of the most important collections of 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century art in the United States . These visionary actions established the fundamental character of this Museum .

Building on this legacy of excellence, the BMA will form an equally compelling collection for the 21st century . Socially relevant, cutting-edge acquisitions, exhibitions, and programs will lead the way both locally and globally—and historical accuracy, merit, and equity will become the basis for a new canon across our Museum . Through collecting, researching, presenting, and interpreting the Museum’s rich and varied collection, and by listening to the needs of our audience, the BMA will embody its commitment to excellence, fairness, relevance, and social justice . Every Museum policy and practice, strategic decision, as well as the composition of the Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers will be driven by these responsibilities . Bold, brave, and essential, it is the unwavering vision of The Baltimore Museum of Art to be the most relevant publicly engaged museum in the United States and a dynamic model for all others .

EXHIBITIONS

A steady rotation of exhibitions ensured there was always something new to see at the BMA . Mark Bradford: Tomorrow Is Another Day recreated much of the experience that captivated audiences at the Venice Biennale in 2017 and set a new attendance record for contemporary art exhibitions at the BMA .

John Waters: Indecent Exposure explored the renegade humor of the Baltimore-based artist through 160 photographs, sculptures, and sound and video works made since the early 1990s . An adjacent exhibition featured three video projects by Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin presented in unconventional, immersive interiors . Monsters & Myths: Surrealism and War in the 1930s and 1940s, co-organized with the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, delved into the imagery used by artists such as Salvador Dalí, André Masson, Pablo Picasso, Dorothea Tanning, and others who were profoundly affected by the political turmoil of the Spanish Civil War and World War II . It was accompanied by an exhibition of psychologically charged videos, sculpture, and immersive installations by the Berlin-based Swedish contemporary artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg. A group of contemporary exhibitions by Keith Calhoun & Chandra McCormick, Oletha DeVane, Maren Hassinger, Ebony G . Patterson, and Elizabeth Talford Scott & Joyce J . Scott amplified the talent of black artists from Baltimore and beyond.

The BMA’s collection was highlighted with exhibitions of African art, contemporary Asian photography, 20th-century landscapes, a ground-breaking new presentation of the contemporary collection, and two six-month presentations of prints, drawings, and photographs to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the eponymous friends group . An exhibition of recent gifts of art from Baltimore philanthropists Mary and Paul Roberts featured outstanding works by artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Jasper Johns, Elizabeth Murray, and Barnett Newman. The BMA was also honored to present a group of unsurpassed Kuba textiles from a private collection . The Patricia and Mark Joseph Education Center hosted DIS I A Good Crisis, a year-long immersive video installation on money, politics, and contemporary media by the New York-based collective DIS and their numerous collaborators . An adjacent space featured Commons Collaboration: Get Your Life!—a collaboration between Baltimore artists who produce narratives developed by and featuring local middle school students .

EDUCATION

Now in its 90th year, the BMA’s education department has made a lasting impact on hundreds of thousands of lives in Baltimore and beyond . This year, the department served more than 45,000 Members, visitors, students, and teachers both in the Museum as well as through digital programs online . More than 13,000 students participated in tours—including Close Encounters and Developing Language Through the Arts programs designed to support their schools’ curricula—and 700 talented students from Baltimore City and Baltimore County public schools had their artworks displayed at the Museum . Families enjoyed the ever-popular Free Family Sunday programs and Community Day events, while adults attended artist talks and panel discussions, Art After Hours, films, Open Hours, and The Necessity of Tomorrow(s) speaker series, which brought together activist and filmmaker Boots Riley with artist Mickalene Thomas for a riveting conversation on the intersections of art, race, and social justice .

Community outreach expanded significantly with the Greenmount West Community Center (GWCC) collaboration initiated by artist Mark Bradford. The BMA and Noisy Tenants assisted in providing the skills-based training and equipment to establish a screen-printing program at the center and pop-up shop at the Museum with profits going to support the community organization. The BMA Outpost saw more than 2,400 at the Hampden Family Center, IKEA in White Marsh, and the Walbrook Junction Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library .

STRONG FISCAL MANAGEMENT

“The BMA ended fiscal year 2019 with a balanced budget thanks to our generous donors and Members, the dedicated leadership of the Board of Trustees, and the resourceful Museum staff. Through their support, the Museum was able to realize an extraordinary range of outstanding artistic and educational programs and sustain free admission. This sound fiscal management reflects the continued commitment to excellence in all areas of operation so that the citizens of Baltimore and the State of Maryland, as well as cultural tourists, can continue to enjoy and benefit from this wonderful institution. We are very grateful for everyone’s generous support of the BMA and their dedication to its vibrant future .”
