Self-proclaimed ‘plant geek’shares gardening favorites

Y O U R G A R D E N Y O U R S P O R T S

Each and every “Plant Geek” has their ownlist of favorites. Although, when yourfamily owns a nursery the list can go onand on. The other thing is, that list canchange as new plants become available —

or as you learn about different varieties. Thereare several nurseries that we buy from that areconstantly introducing these different plant vari-eties — thus contributing to my constant searchfor the perfect plant.

In this article, Idecided to list some ofmy favorite plants. Some will be old stand-bys and others moreunusual varieties. Bythe time I write thesedown, I’m sure my listcould change But then, that’s the fun of plants!Plants are like earrings— you can never havetoo many! And justwhen you think youhaven’t anymore room, you can always buy apot to plant it in orhang a grouping in atree.

My first category areplants that can make an architectural statement— you know, plants with good form and interest.I love the Mexican Grass Palm — you can use itin the flowerbed or in a big pot. Singularly or ina group, it is a true stand out. This plant lovesthe heat and can take extreme cold. Two otherstatuesque plants are Cereus Peruvianus and theOptunia (there is one that is thornless and it isedible) — these are both large cactus with beau-tiful forms. The Cereus has big flowers and thenproduces cactus apples.

Trees with some extra interest are Crape Myr-tle — with the slick bark and nice form whenmature — and Tristinia a small evergreen withnice form. Both are good trees to prune intomulti- or low-branching trees that don’t grow toobig. Crape Myrtles have a lot of new fun flowercolors as well as a nice fall leaf color. The Tris-tinia is dark green with a small yellow bloomthat comes out in the spring.

I love Salvia clevelandii for its fragrance —both leaves and flowers have a wonderful clean

smell. This drought tolerant California native isthe most fragrant of all the sages. There are sev-eral varieties to chose from — the main differ-ence being size. Another nice fragrant flower isSweet Olive. The Sweet Olive should be plantedin the shade.

Arctotis Pink Sugar has a beautiful grayfoliage with a bright orange and pink daisyflower — quite a striking show of color and lotsof bloom. Speaking of lots of bloom, whatblooms more than geraniums? The new hybridgeraniums give you “tons” of blooms and thenadd brightly variegated leaves for even morecolor.

Gerbera Daisies are another of my favorites.Bright hot colors can bloom off and on through-out the year — and it can be used as a cutflower, too.

Scabiosa is another good cut flower andblooms in the spring and summer. The Scrabiosacomes in a nice blue, pink or white. This onecan get mildew, so spray a fungicide as needed.Try Geralton Wax Flower for a large hardyshrub with a long lasting cut flower — maybethe longest lasting cut flower. Add alstromeriato this group of plants and you will have a trulyprofessional florist bouquet.

My last category are “weird plants.” I lovesucculents and sedum is one of my favorites.Sedums come in so many shapes and colors Idon’t even know why they are in the same fami-ly. They are usually very hardy and can take thecold, where many other succulents have to beprotected in Bakersfield.

Then there are the Euphorbias. They are relat-ed to Poinsettia but must be a distant cousinbecause you would never know they are relat-ed.They have many different colors of leavesand variegation's, not to mention the strange lit-tle bloom clusters. You will just have to come byand check these two out — there’s just too manyvarieties to describe.

Next time you think there is nothing new toplant, swing by our new location and check outsome of these varieties — and with my curiosityabout plants you might just find something newand different. If you just want to “talk plants”come on by. We have several “Plant Geeks”waiting to serve you!
