2014 – 2015 Representative Program
"If we concentrated less on results at an early age, and more on technical development, and this idea of kids falling in love with the game, they would be much better off…" John Hackworth, Philadelphia Union, manager and youth development coordinator
Welcome. Letter From the Executive Director.
It is with great excitement that we share with you that Delaware Union (MOT) and CDSA (Smyrna/Dover) have agreed to merge under the banner of Delaware Union beginning with the 2014 summer tryouts. This great merger of equals will allow the pooling of our athletes within the Representative program to deliver best-in-class service for our players. A combined leadership team has been formed to manage the new club and its premier Representative program, while town level Regional Boards in Middletown, Smyrna and Dover have been formed to manage the grass roots growth in its independent Recreational programs. In the long-term, the Delaware Union will be a strategic anchor tenant in the $24 million dollar Kent County Regional Sports Complex slated for 2015 to host regional tournaments, friendlies, and a variety of youth and adult leagues within the borders of Delaware to help drive the local economy. Over time, the new Delaware Union will implement its strategic goal to partner with likeminded quality club affiliates on the Rte 1 corridor to continue to build the Delaware Union brand with additional Regional Operational Boards to promote the best possible soccer in Delaware. At its end state, the Delaware Union footprint will encompass a 3 tier team Representative program in each age group, fed by 5+ independently managed Recreational town pools in New Castle County, Central Delaware, Northern Sussex County and everywhere in between. Join the Movement! Mike Womer Executive Director
Welcome. Letter From the Director of Coaching.
The idea of Delaware Union has been a concept dreamed up by a small number of people over the past decade. As those likeminded folks rose to positions of leadership at area soccer clubs they realized that the status quo for those clubs had fallen below what other regional clubs are achieving. The merger of Delaware Union (MOT) and CDSA (Smyrna/Dover) was based on the simple concept of technical development servicing larger player pools to allow our youth to excel in whatever stage of development they currently find themselves. As a reality, soccer clubs can push top players in an age group only as far as the average skill in that group. All coaches must try and bring the players who need more touches to a higher level while struggling to find ways to keep their “top” players engaged and developing at a targeted pace. This can be a daunting task with limited pools of 12 - 18 players due to the skills diversity from top to bottom. Increasing the pool, in theory, allows a club to have more flexibility in its ability based training and development approach. Think of it as an academic approach used by educators. Advance Placement (AP) students are pushed to new heights separately while the other students progress in classes that better suit their development to success differently. This is our aim at the new Delaware Union, to provide each player the proper development and trainer to achieve their next technical level. Success in this cause, coupled with the nurturing of the “The LOVE of the Game” will make our players stronger and better prepared than most for years to come. Attracting and retaining coaches of this mindset will be the goal, so that Delaware Union players will feel the passion and desire of wanting the next stage of development touch by touch on their way to technical proficiency. Join the Movement! Bill Boyer Director of Coaching

Training Philosophy
Dream Phase - Seek to create an inspirational learning environment where kids are encouraged to discover a LOVE and PASSION for the game of soccer. Creatively connects our youth to soccer's heroes with the objective of fostering a true passion for the game. Believe one of our most important objectives as teachers is to get our young participants dreaming about the game and its heroes. It is our belief that players who learn to love the game will fuel their own development and growth through increased hours on the soccer ball dreaming... imagining... and discovering on their own. Perform Phase - Like many youth development programs, place tremendous emphasis on technical skill and individual mastery of the soccer ball. Believe skill acquisition alone is of questionable long-term value unless learned in a game related environment. Perform Phase is our "industrious" technical phase where our young participants are encouraged to work hard to discover technical skill through active game-related "play" environments. During the "golden learning years" of ages 8-12, it's critical to emphasize development of skills and soccer creativity over results - technical skills are the foundation of ALL great players and are the building blocks of positive self-esteem. Developing technical skills and the knowledge of when, where and why to apply them in game settings takes experience. Strive to manufacture environments, which enhance the probability of our participants discovering knowledge of a skill while in the act of learning how to execute that skill. Excel Phase - Attitude and behavior are learned/acquired skills (especially with the impressionable ages of 6-12). Many times the difference between being good at something and being truly great comes down to attitude and desire. Thinking "if I can train my feet I can train my mind" declares to our young participants the importance of attitude and core values such effort, and desire. The measure of success is not only by what is happening on the field of play, but also more importantly by the attitude our participants' show towards competition and adversity. The guiding message to the kids is that with right attitude all things are possible! Believe in taking the long-view on development and will not sacrifice principals in order to achieve short-term success. The goal is to develop superior technical players who demonstrate an endless desire to become the best they can be at whatever they set out to do. The belief is this mentality of striving for excellence is a characteristic that is shared by all true "champions" both on and off the field of play.
