Challenges faced by Financial Institutions
• How to serve people who have low income and turn it into a profitable venture. In this regard, erstwhile methods will prove expensive/costly and unprofitable
• Managing current levels of growth• Developing new products suited for low income earners• Expanding in new geographic areas• Addressing other strategic and operational challenges
which include– Security, convenience, speed and cost
3
The Attraction of Mobile Payments
The attraction of mobile payments for every stakeholder is unquestionable.
4
The Attraction for Financial Institutions
All banks strive to:• Increase Penetration• Sell more services• Retain the most valuable customers• Reduce the cost of providing services
5
The Attraction for Financial Institutions - Contd.
Mobile Payments • are a potential method for protecting
the current account and surrounding loan products and avoiding further disintermediation from customers.
• also provide the possibility of reducing cash and cost effectively servicing under-banked geographies
6
The Attraction for Financial Institutions - Contd.
Mobile Banking • By introducing mobile banking and skillfully using an
agent network for cash-in and cash out, banks can effectively provide profitable banking services to under-banked and unbanked low income clients, even in remote and sparsely populated areas where the traditional brick and mortar branches would not have been feasible.
• Money can be made through Transaction fees. Deposits - Increase in deposits to the bank as the
volume of small savings adds up to significant amounts. E.g. 1 million people each saving only N500 a week will yield N26 Billion in just one year!
7
The Attraction for Mobile Payment Providers• Secure existing Mobile Payment platforms• Meet Government and Regulatory requirements
for security of mobile payment transactions• Compliancy with industry standards – SOX, PCI,
FISMA, etc.• Rapid time to market
8
The Attraction for Mobile Network Operators• Mobile payments are an attractive
proposition for achieving a return on the investments made in infrastructure over the last two decades through both extra payment related revenues and the associated increase in air time and data use.
• They also hold the possibilities of allowing for diversification into other areas of the consumer’s needs and lifestyle and reducing churn amongst existing customers.
9
The Attraction for Mobile Network Operators Contd.• Direct Channel top-ups help network
operators reduce operational costs associated with payments (post–paid and prepaid), including printing and distributing cards to retail outlets and payment of commissions to agents and retailers
10
The Attraction for Merchants• Remote mobile payments provide another
channel for merchants and as such are an attractive proposition if the use of the channel can gain wide scale adoption at lower costs than existing channels
• Mobile payments could provide the ability to send real time marketing messages to the consumer.
11
• Mobile phone has achieved ‘permanent share of pocket’, i.e. next to the wallet and keys, it is the object that is most likely to be constantly with the consumer.
• Furthermore, consumers are increasingly more comfortable with the mobile phone fulfilling more than one function, with mobile devices slowly morphing into multi-media and multi-application devices.
• Mobile Payment provides a low cost, fast and convenient alternative payment channel.
12
The Attraction for Consumers
13
Mobile Banking in Nigeria - Overview• People have mobile phones readily available • Users are familiar with the process of sending SMS• Mobile banking is a low cost alternative for facilitating financial
inclusion to low income earners (whether in the urban centres or rural areas) when compared to expensive brick and mortar branches or ATM and POS deployments.
• Presently, there are over 60 million prepaid mobile phones users in Nigeria.– 60% of those who have access to prepaid mobile phones in Nigeria are
unbanked, this means that about 36 million mobile phone users are unbanked.
• Mobile Banking will enable Financial Institutions to provide services for over 36 million mobile phone users who are currently unbanked
14
Major Challenge of Going Mobile• Security – Security is the major challenge facing Mobile
Banking, irrespective of the chosen channel (SMS, WAP, etc.)
The major channel for Mobile Banking is SMS, as most users are familiar with texting. However, the standard SMS which everybody uses is not secure but highly vulnerable.• Messages can be intercepted and tampered with at multiple
locations: Message Reception and Display - On the user’s handsetMessage Transmission – Over the AirMessage Storage – At the operator’s network
CellTrust provides the much needed security15
