PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 4 2019!
Year 6 Final Term
I find it so incredible to think that, as of today, our Year 6 students only have 41 days left at our school. And what an action-packed 41 days it will be! Today, a note will go home to all of our Year 6 students with current information about all of the upcoming events they have over the next eight weeks. I can’t stress enough that the information we have provided is current as of today and may be subject to change. I encourage families to check the newsletter, website and Skoolbag app for any changes to the information provided today.
School Improvements
You may have noticed that the school has had some trades people working in various locations this week. We are really excited to let our community know that our school will be undergoing significant maintenance work over the coming eight weeks. Improvements to the Administration block, Library, Computer Lab, Stage 3 classrooms, Stage 2 classrooms, canteen and concrete are among the list of works that the Department of Education has identified as part of the Planned Maintenance Program.
We do aim to keep disruptions to a minimum, however, there will be times where classes will be relocated, on a temporary basis, while work is undertaken in their classrooms. Some access around the school may also be impacted and we ask that all students, staff and visitors keep away from fenced off areas.
I am certain that our community will be appreciative of the improvements. We can’t wait to see the finished product.
Bandfest
On Tuesday, I had the absolute pleasure of seeing our band perform at the Lake Macquarie Bandfest. Led by the incredibly talented Ms Oosterveen, our band played 4 pieces; Smoke on the Water, Penguin Promenade, Star Wars and Kangaroo Bop. Without bias, I can say that our band gave the most magnificent performance I saw on the day. Not only did they look spectacular in their HPS Band uniform, they demonstrated exemplary musicianship, played beautifully together, followed the directions of their conductor and produced melodic and harmonious music. I am delighted to report that our band was awarded a Highly Commended from the adjudicator. Well done band and well done Ms O!

Chess Gala Day
Congratulations to all of the students who attended the Chess Gala Day at Marks Point PS on Tuesday. Mrs Cambourn reported that our students demonstrated exemplary behaviour and were highly competitive throughout the gala.
Science Discovery Day
On Tuesday last week, Mrs Cambourn took a group of students to Saint Mary’s College at Gateshead to compete in the Science Discovery Day Challenge. The day saw our students in Years 5 and 6 participate in a number of STEM-based activities. Our students engaged completely in all of the hands-on experiences, which are created to inspire students to make a difference in the world by choosing a career in Science and Engineering. I am very proud to report that our school came second overall in the challenge. Well done team and many thanks to Mrs Cambourn for organising this special day.
Staffing Updates
While Mrs Norton is on extended leave, Mrs Leskiw will be teaching library. Mrs Norton is due to return in week 8.
5/6B have also been very excited to welcome Mr Burke back to HPS after his term as relieving Assistant Principal at Mayfield East Public School. We thank Mrs Cambourn for taking over for Mr Burke in his absence.
