Purpose• Standard/core: Standard 1, objective 2, indicator b
– Standard 1Students will understand the base-ten numeration system, place value concepts, simple fractions and perform operations with whole numbers.
– Objective 2Use fractions to communicate and compare parts of the whole.
• Define regions and sets of objects as a whole and divide the whole into equal parts using a variety of objects, models, and illustrations.
• Learning goal: Students will understand that they can make fractions out of anything.

Manipulatives
• At this point, I used magnets to stick 7 leaves to the board
• As a class, we made them into a fraction (3/7 of the leaves are orange)

• Then I passed out small cut-outs of varying shapes/colors

set of things.
Draw a picture of the fractions on your worksheet.
What Went Well
• Students loved having their own set of manipulatives
• Students could visually see the fraction
What Didn’t Go Well• The activity was looking at pictures
and writing a fraction, while the assessment was making pictures when given a fraction- opposites! (assess what was taught next time!)
• Wasn’t as good on the Promethean Board as I wanted to be (Practice next time!)

Didn’t meet this one- students should have used the Promethean Board- not just teacher

1. Success! The Promethean Board was not the focus- it was the helper!
