Differing Attitudes Across Generations?• Silent Generation (Born 1925-1945)

– Also called the Postwar Generation and the Seekers– Too late to be war heroes; too early to be youthful free spirits– Risk-averse technicians, sensitive rock-n-rollers ("Why must I be a teenager in love?"), brooding Method

actors and civil rights advocates of a post-Crisis era– Conformity seemed a sure ticket to success

• Baby Boomers (Born 1946-1964)– Children of G.I. Generation– Influences:–Suburbia, TV, Vietnam, Watergate, protests, human rights movement, drugs, and rock ‘n roll– Characteristics:–Live to work–Generally optimistic–Influence on policy– Two-thirds of faculty today are baby boomers

• Generation X (Born 1965-1980)– Influences

• Sesame Street, MTV, Game Boy, PC, divorce rate tripled, latch-key children– Characteristics

• –Need a balance between work and life• –Clear & consistent expectations• –Value contributing to the whole• –Skeptical, but flexible and motivated• –Adaptive to change and technology• One of the defining factors of Generation X is the transitions resulting from the decline of colonial

imperialism to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War.– 16% of today’s faculty– 25% of current students

• Millennials(Born 1980-2002 - aka Generation Y)– Influences–Expanded technology, disasters, gangs, diversity, globalization– Characteristics–Live in the moment–Expect immediacy of technology–Work in teams–Globally concerned–

Desire structure and purpose–Constant feedback– 60% of today’s students
