ISSUES AND PROBLEMS
Decrease in Physical Education Instructional Time Schools are refocusing their priorities on meeting standards in content areas and increasing scores on state and national tests
Fewer schools are requiring physical education
Physical education courses are being replaced in order to increase academic achievement
Obesity
Children need a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity a day
Physical inactivity is a direct cause of obesity
17% of American children are overweight
ISSUES AND PROBLEMS
Accurate Health Information
The internet is not always the best resource for health information
Our children need to be educated about their health and taught how to identify accurate and misleading health information
Physical Education and Health Standards Physical education standards have evolved over the years
The current standards are not being implemented

YOU CAN DO IT
TECH-PACK NEEDS AND CHALLENGES
WE ARE RESPONSIBLE
Not enough emphasis is being placed on physical education and health in our society
In order to make up for this deficit, teachers of all content areas need to encourage physical activity and promote healthy living
We need to educate ourselves in order to educate our students
Make healthy choices, practice healthy living, and be a role model
PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH EDUCATION CONTENT KNOWLEDGE Only teachers in the physical education and health education teachers are extremely knowledgeable in content standards for this area, compared to teachers in other content areas who are not.
A challenge for all teachers in the area of physical and health teachers is to become more aware of the content standards in relevance to today’s young people.
It is to the advantage of all educators to learn more about physical fitness and healthy behavior.
STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING TECH-PACK IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH EDUCATIONTeachers should ask themselves three questions to help them move to their most optimized zone (the intersection of all three components)
1. Do I have the physical education and health education content knowledge I need to assist my students in meeting the standards within my classroom?
2. Do I have the pedagogical knowledge needed to teach the physical education and health content within my classroom?
3. Do I have the technological knowledge needed to teach the physical education and health content within my classroom?
