FLEXIBILITY & FULL SUPPORT
RAW’s Tasmanian walks are very achievable as we have designed our walking routes with flexibility in mind, given that people have different abilities and aims for their trip.
There’s no pressure to walk the at a certain pace, or walk all the options - you only walk as much as you’d like to. Or if you are keen to extend your walk as much as possible then your guide will come up with options to suit each day. We will have two staff accompany each trip, so that in the event of injury one staff member can accompany the injured party while the group continues with the other leader.
You’ll only need to carry a day pack on each day’s outing. RAW’s experienced guides are trained in First Aid and carry emergency communications, giving you security and peace of mind outdoors.
The walking on our Tasmania trips is not overly difficult and should be suitable for anyone of reasonable fitness and walking experience. If you have any doubts please call and speak to one our staff.

Freycinet Lodge
Accommodation
• In Hobart we stay at the centrally located Old Woolstore hotel, close to the historic waterfront ( pictured right)
• On Maria Island we stay at the historic but basic Penitentiary at Darlington. ( 2 to ‘a cell’ with shared bathroom and communal eating facilities)
• In Coles Bay we alternate between the
• Freycinet lodge and the Edge of the Bay resort, both excellent lodges with good facilities.
• In the Bay of Fires we use beach house accommodation and may use two properties dependent on eventual group size to ensure enough rooms.
The historic but very basic accommodation at the Penitentiary in Darlington is the only one offered on Maria Island. The original convict complex is very atmospheric and a fun contrast to the comfortable accommodation on the rest of the trip.
Private cabins at the wonderfully located Freycinet lodge, Coles Bay.
When to walk?
RAW operates it’s Tasmania trips from October to April each year. Tasmania’s is known for it’s unpredictable weather but the East Coast enjoys the most stable weather with a mild temperate climate and most hours of sunshine. You should prepare for all weather conditions with adequate wet weather walking gear. Temperatures tend to be ideal for walking with mid - teens to 20c in Spring and Autumn.
During summer, the East coast experiences long, mild days, with temperatures averaging at a comfortable 22 degrees Celcius—perfect for bushwalking. The truth is every season has it’s beauty and also it’s share of sunny and overcast days as well. As long as you are properly prepared you’ll enjoy any day in Tasmania.
The chart below shows the climate averages for Swansea which is located mid way on the East Coast near Freyncinet National Park.
