‘’IRIS’’
Intelligent Reclaim Irrigation System
Industry Market Segments
Food- & pharmaceutical industry;
Chemical and petrochemical industry;
Bio fermentation & reuse of nutrients;
Greenhouses;
Concrete- & asphalt industry;
Water boards & drinking water industry.
IRIS Background
local need for reliable irrigation water,
Irrigation uses 68% of water resource Spain,
3,8 million hectares Spain,
3.600 wastewater plants small communities
Cost reduction on water.

IRIS Objectives
Small scale purification domestic
wastewater
Reclaim water and nutrients (P / N)
Application area
– Greenhouse irrigation
– Open field substrate
– Open field
IRIS challenges
Removing selectively substances from water like Na, Ca.
Nutrients: N and P in reclaimed water are beneficial to plants but
may cause nutrient imbalances, eutrophication of surface waters,
and contamination of groundwater.
Pharmaceutically-active Chemicals and Endocrine Disruptors:
Potential for eco-toxicological
pH: Affects metal solubility and alkalinity of soils.
Biodegradable Organics: BOD, COD or TOC - can cause
aesthetic and nuisance problems, adversely affect disinfection
processes, and deplete soil oxygen
IRIS Total project overview
IRIS: Intelligent
Different types of water
1: Irrigators community water
2: Effluent WWTP
3: IRIS water
Fertilizer & water dosing controlled
on needs of the plants
IRIS: Reclaim
RAW water WWTP
First step: Electro flocculation
Second step: Ultra filtration
Third step: Nano-filtration
Additional test: biogas generation
of produced sludge
Nutrients such as P and N are monitored,
in the IRIS water less nutrients are added
IRIS Process
IRIS: Irrigation
This year tomato plants on:
1: Coconut Fiber Substrate
2: Rockwool Substrate
Automatic drip system serving water to the plant.
The plant will be monitored over fruit delivery,
photosynthesis, growth etc.
IRIS: System
Project objectives:
1: Reuse of water and nutrients.
2: Optimize agronomic production.
3: Wastewater-treatment small clusters.
4: Getting marketable product ©
