Home to the Athabasca Oil Sands, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is one of the largest municipalities in all of Canada. Made up of eleven unique and vibrant communities it is evident that there is so much to see and do in the region. Located 435 kilometers north of the capital region of Edmonton, our area has a population of 104,338 people. That number is continuing to grow as the region is becoming more popular and is beginning to attract new residents.
Being the largest unincorporated “city” in Alberta, Fort McMurray is equipped with many state of the art facilities as well as modern infrastructure all while being located in the heart of the Boreal Forest. This rare combination of true urban and rural settings provides residents and visitors (both domestic and international) a huge variety of opportunities in recreation and culture.
A diverse cosmopolitan population has found a “home away from home” here in The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. It is this global representation that contributes to the cultural richness of the region. While an indigenous population of Chipewyan and Beaver are native to the Athabasca region, by the 1870s the Cree, Metis and Euro-Canadians also made their homes here. Today the diversity of culture in the region is both recognized and celebrated.
