A wonderful example to her swimmers, coach and super-fit great–grandmother, Daph Soppa
claimed four gold medals out of seven at the National Championships in Perth.
Bruce Lovett picked up two silver and two
bronze and Tracy Dunn another team mate, took home three bronze medals.
Daph swam in the 75—79 age group and this was her first time at a National Championships.
―I knew I was top five in Australia, by my
times, but I did not expect gold,‖ Soppa said.
Although Daph comes from a swimming family,
having swum from the age of 11, including be-ing placed at the state titles, netball became
her passion. She went on to coach state teams and in 1982, she guided Queensland to
the national under-21 netball title. After leaving
the Gold Coast and settling in Bundaberg again, Daph became the netball regional director of
coaching.
The love affair with netball continued for a
number of years. Before finally stepping down
in 2009, Daph had achieved great success with
the Natives Club, including winning three Division 1 premierships, over
a 15 year period.
In 1999, Daph returned to swim-ming. Six years ago, she took up
the position of assistant coach and
two years ago that of coach.
Bruce Lovett was second in the
men‘s 50—54 years 200 fly, 400 IM
and third in the 200 IM and 2km open water swim.
Tracy Dunn grabbed bronze in the women's
40—45 200m breaststroke, 200 fly, and 400 IM
These three train together every day at
5.30a.m. except Saturdays and the camara-derie in the group and the support given to
each other was a major contributor to their
success.
Well done and no doubt the Nationals in Ade-
laide from the 14th—17th April 2012, beckons
this trio from Rum City.

Sincere thanks to Cheryl and Sam for keep-ing things rolling through the small hours.
May 17th was their last coached swim and

with coaches on deck will continue at Gor-donvale during the winter months
Cairns Mudcrabs completed the Lions Multi-ple Sclerosis 24 hour Mega Swim on 14/15th
May and managed a very creditable 56.4 km in
all, raising over $1675 for the cause. Well done everyone!
Several of their newer members achieved dis-
tances they‘d never swum before. Quite a few aerobic swims, 1 hour, 1500 metres and half

Gladstone Gropers purchased a Patient Recov-ery Board, with funds from the Federal Volunteer
Grants Program. Coach and Referee Russell gave
the initial training in the usage of the Board, which was timely and appreciated as it was used
soon afterwards in real cases.
The club‘s Silver Jubilee is developing into a memorable event with the dinner on September
10th when past members and Patron Simon Hooton will be invited to attend. To entice partici-
pation in the Charity Swim (proceeds to Leukae-
mia Foundation) it has been proposed to devise a program to allow the Committee to select out-
standing members to go into the draw for the major prize in the Participation and Improvement
State Programs.
A farewell dinner was held recently for Dale and Alan Atherinos (below with President, Joan
Green) in appreciation of their contribution to
Gladstone Gropers.
Many other social events are in the pipeline, in-cluding the mid year presentation on June
5th….their social calendar is nearly as busy as their training programme.
Three members swam at Noosa and all did well.
Two prospective coaches (Jenny and Glen) at-tended the last Level 1 Masters Coaching Course
at Miami i.e. before the introduction of the new course.

Hervey Bay Humpbacks all seem to be doing quite a lot of travelling with their President and
Vice President out of town, and Paula in the west
too. Apart from visiting her daughter in Perth, Pau-la competed at the Nationals, bringing home a Sil-
ver in 200 Fly and Bronze in the Open Water Swim. Congratulations!
Despite a variety of social functions the evening
before the Pier to Pub, Rosie, Shane, Paula, Terry, Daryl and Viv all swam well in the 3.4 km event.
None of them won any money, but Rosie made the
Monday night TV news!
Aerobic swims are conducted every Wednesday
morning at 8a.m. with Paul A and they include Fit-
ness programs, which must surely help all who at-tend. A chance to see another side of several of
their club mates will be when the ― Theatre Restau-rant Performers‘‘ produce ―The Sherriff of Rot-
ting‘m‘‘ in the near future .
Noosa Challengers had a rollicking good trip to the Albany Creek meet, where all 19 Noosa swim-
mers performed well, both in and out of the pool.
Bob and Olga and Wendy showed great spirit and stamina by timekeeping all day while Erica and
Mark R provided valuable support with team organ-isation. Janet, Stephanie and Barbara were swim-
ming for the first time for Noosa Masters. Well done! Fittingly the club‘s oldest and the youngest-
Joyce and Kerryn- both broke State records!
The club was placed third overall out of 24 clubs.
Russell posted a terrific 13min video on You Tube for all to enjoy.

Nudgee Blue Fins are experiencing some prob-lems with the 50m pool and are unable to conduct
their Saturday morning Masters‘ session until further notice. However, this setback did not worry the four-
teen club swimmers who attended Albany Creek
meet. This number included Vos and G and Lizelle who were virgin swimmers on the day.
Understandably, Lizelle‘s nerves were a little high,
but she put in some fabulous swims. All members were pleased with their swims and thoroughly en-
joyed the day. Thanks to Fiona for taking the Nudgee Brothers shade and those who erected it. It
really stands out and is great protection to have
when needed. Thanks to Albany Creek for such a friendly and well organised meet.
The next club meeting was on 26th May at the pool
and it incorporated the ―BIG MORNING TEA‖ to raise funds for Breast Cancer research. Members were
asked to wear Pink and to bring a donation for this worthy cause.
Albany Creek club members say…..Merci
Beaucoup, Muchas Gracias, Thanks ----- to everyone who attended their swim meet in April and helped
make it such a great success. Thank you to not just
the large number of swimmers (although they are just a little important), but to all the volunteers,
family, friends and other clubs supporters, who helped on the day. Everyone had a great day, in-
cluding their first time swimmers.
Then it was off to Noosa where some more good results were achieved. Katie Mc is working her way
through the butterfly records in her first year in Mas-
ters and Penny S is setting records every time she dives in the pool- Well done!

At Noosa again 9 swimmers completed either the 1km or 2km Blue Swim and had a fun day despite
early showers. These distances are very achieva-
ble for any pool swimmer.
Brisbane Northside recently enjoyed a South
Bank Social outing even though some members
lost their way to the restaurant. However, the food and wines at the Italian Restaurant were
―most acceptable‘‘ to those who attended.
Seven swimmers travelled to Twin Towns Oasis Pool for the State Championships and brought
home a veritable swag of medals.
The event represented another experience of good weather, good swimming and good compa-
ny. All swimmers won medals in their age groups and QBN won the Small Club Trophy. Once again
Fun, Fitness and Friendship shone! After the AGM
members dined at the Twin Towns Bistro to sa-vour their results.
Welcome to new member Sally R.
Social Secretary Shelley is planning an afternoon
at the theatre to see Jesus Christ Superstar at QPAC in June and she has asked members to con-
tact her re time preferences….possible Sunday afternoon performance?
Brisbane Southside swimmers are watching
with interest as the new outdoor 50m pool is be-ing constructed beside the Brisbane Aquatic Cen-
tre. It is certainly looking very impressive so far.
Hopefully by November visiting swimmers for their 30th Anniversary Swim Meet will see an almost
completed venue. Other additions to the Sleeman Centre, such as the World Class BMX Track are
also attracting great interest from future partici-pants.
At the State Championships at Banora Point all
club members swam well bringing home a swag of medals and PBs. The women‘s 280+ Medley
relay scored State and National Records. The
club‘s oldest female swimmer, Amy M, really set some fantastic individual records and Coach Jen T
was named Female Swimmer of the Meet as well as Over 50 Swimmer of the Meet. Remarkable
achievements for you both…..your club salutes
you!
Amy has already gained ten record breaking swims this year and in her 50m Backstroke she
actually broke her own record (from River City) at
Albany Creek.
Planning is well under way to make the club‘s An-
nual Swim Meet a very happy celebration of 30
years at Chandler. It is believed that QSM held the first swim meet at the venue.
Miami Masters had a very, very impressive list
of swimmers who featured in the FINA World Top Ten for 2010. Jane S, Margaret F, Joan M, Pauline
B, Neal M, Mark F-W, Henry V, John C, AND Den-ise R all deserve a ― well swum‖ pat on the back.

At the National Championships in Perth the club‘s team of 6 females and 5 males performed very
well with an Individual medal tally of 20 gold, 15
silver and 14 bronze. They also won gold in 4 re-lays and brought home the Aggregate Points Tro-phy for 240+ Relays. Congratulations to all!
Miami swimmers recently took part in another Charity Swim. This time for the Bluefit Founda-
tion, which supports bush children who do not have access to those sporting facilities, which we
all take for granted.
Alan G organised a Magical Mystery Bike Tour last month – a gentle pedal through the back streets
of exotic Palm Beach, starting at Tallebudgera
Creek and finishing with a swim at Currumbin Es-tuary. The ultimate destination, however, was the
Palm Beach Pub where all enjoyed food, drink and good company.
A group of swimmers meet at Burleigh Beach eve-
ry Sunday at 7:30a.m. for a leisurely swim to North Burleigh. All visiting Masters are warmly
invited to join in.
Twin Towns Masters were given ―Big Wraps‖ after hosting the first State Swim to be held at
their pool at Banora Point, with State President,
Therese and MSQ Administrator, Helga attending the club‘s morning tea on 21st May. President Ken
was extremely proud of all those members who competed and/or were part of the ―chain gang‖,
―catering crowd‖ and Raffles co-ordinators.
Well done also in regards to the professionalism
of the officials. A HUGE THANKS to you all!
Ken then headed to Perth for the National Swim
(for the 12th time) and a chance to catch up with
his sister.

important member of QTT.
Level 1 Masters Coaching Course – 28/29 May 2011 at Miami Pool
Congratulations to the 25 Masters members who
signed up for the coaching course! Poor Helga had to order and reorder workbooks due to the
increase in participants, but it was great to see so much interest in becoming qualified in coach-
ing Masters Swimmers. I can only see this as a
bonus for all Masters‘ members.

Over the last weekend of May, 24 brave people gave up their time to attend the MSQ Level 1

adult swimming, nutrition, health & medical as-pects of coaching, stretching, rules and teaching
new skills to adult swimmers (prac session).
Nick Marshall, Physiotherapist facilitated sessions
on ―Health and Medical Aspects of Coaching‖ and

He clarified quite a few misconceptions many of us had about the rules. Steve Cornelius was
very versatile and invaluable. He did a great
job with both catering and facilitating! A big thank you to all the presenters for giving up
there weekend and for sharing their knowledge and skills.
The highlights for the weekend were the practi-
cal sessions and the interaction between partici-
pants and presenters. It was great to see eve-
ryone getting involved and sharing their ideas
and experiences. All in all, it was a very enjoya-
ble and successful weekend. I look forward to
seeing these wonderful people achieving their

Clubs need to start making a decision on whether they wish to partake in the two new programs: Participation and Improvement.
A major prize will be awarded to an individual drawn from all nominations sent in to the office. The
major prize will be a trip for two to a holiday destination overseas.
Each program, will in addition draw an individual retail voucher, a club prize, a prize for the Club
Coach and 5 minor prizes.
It is therefore imperative that your club makes a decision now already regarding an interesting,
innovative program it wishes to adopt.
The program needs to not only be applicable to one event, but should be ongoing for the rest of the
year and into next year. More information will be released soon.
Participation Program:—Ideas: set goals for individuals; create your own club swim program that could count towards the aerobic and Million Metre swims; create a program for your volunteers,
officials and/or coaches.
Improvement Program:- Ideas: a program that recognises the highest number/points/events…
an individual enters in whatever the club determines; obvious and consistent improvement over a
considerable period of time; innovative coaching program; innovative club program designed to at-tract new members; overall club improvement in…
Set the guidelines for your program, but remember it must not be based on only one event.
MSX - The new Masters Excellence Program for our more competitive swimmers.
It has a 4—four tier structure: PLATINUM, GOLD, SILVER & BRONZE.
The times you need to swim for each distance and each stroke, will be sent to clubs.
These times are based on the Point Score System as per the Results Portal (both long & short
course).
All swimmers, who achieve one of the tiers, will receive an award. One major winner will be drawn
from all 4 tiers.
THE MAJOR PRIZE IS: A TRIP FOR 2 (airfare and accommodation) to the
