Arrival.
Your holiday experience begins even before you reach your destination. By train, plane and fast comfortable connections, start your stay in Switzer-land by arriving rested and relaxed.
Arrival by trainWhen it comes to rail travel, the Swiss are world champions. That goes for international connect-ions, too. Every day many trains cross into the country from throughout Europe – from Germany and Austria, France, Italy and the Netherlands. To enhance your travel experience, most trains include a dining car or bar, electrical connections, a newspaper service. And much more besides. Arrival by airYou land in Switzerland, climb aboard your train or bus, and head for your holiday destination. It’s that simple. Swiss airports are well connected to the country’s extensive public transport net-work. Zurich and Geneva Airports have their own railway stations, with trains departing every few minutes to the city centre or more distant desti-nations. Basel and Bern Airports are served by regular local bus services to the city centre, from where you can continue your trouble-free travel by train.

Panorama route 1 – from St. Moritz to Zermatt. Glacier Express
The world’s slowest express train is also the most famous – with stunning scenery and a remarkable array of rail-way engineering feats linking the Alpine resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt. The red and white train wends its way across no fewer than 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. But don’t worry, you won’t miss anything. Observation windows open up vistas of unique landscapes – for example, the Engadine with its tradi-tional sgraffito-decorated dwellings, the Reichenau-Tamins meeting point of the upper and lower Rhine rivers, and the Domleschg valley with its 13th century Schloss Ortenstein and other countless castles. Other scenic highlights include the glorious Goms region, Disentis with its beautiful Benedictine monastery, the 400-metre deep Rhine Gorge and the 2033-metre high Oberalp Pass. And of course the mighty Matterhorn. All in a spectacular setting of rugged rock faces, crystal-clear mountain lakes and unspoilt villages. Mentioning all the scenic sights would take us forever – so why not step aboard the Glacier Express and see for yourself?

Panorama route 2 – from Chur to Tirano (Italy) and Lugano. Bernina Express
The Bernina Express must be the most spectacu-lar Alpine crossing. Departing from Chur, the crimson-coloured train climbs to the Upper Engadine before weaving its way behind the Bernina Hospiz (2253 metres) through the Poschiavo Valley into the Valtellina region of Italy.
The first highlight awaits passengers near Filisur, where the train traverses an awe inspiring landmark – the 65-metre-high Landwasser viaduct. The route contin-ues through 55 tunnels and across 196 bridges, making short work of the
gradients (even without a rack-and-pinion system). The cross-border Albula and Bernina lines between Thusis and Tirano owe their UNESCO World Heritage status to stunning sights such as the famous Montebello Curve (with views of the Bernina massif and Morteratsch Glacier), the Pitschen, Nair and Bianco lakes, Alp Grüm and the Brusio circular viaduct. And nothing can compare with catching that first glint of glacial ice on the horizon.
The most beautiful Alpine experience. The Bernina Express seamlessly connects the cool north with the warm sunny south, effortlessly overcoming the steepest gradients. This is one of the most beautiful rail trips in the world.

Panorama route 3 – from Lucerne to Montreux. GoldenPass Line
Going for gold. The GoldenPass Line links six lakes and two of the country’s contrasting language regions. Combine timeless tradition in German-speaking Central Switzerland with French flair on Lake Geneva. All in one day.
Taking a day trip on the GoldenPass Line is in itself like taking a short vaca-tion. After leaving Lucerne and its enchanting lake and mountains, enjoy more scenic splendour as the Lucerne-Interlaken Express climbs leisurely past the Alpnach, Sarner and Lungern lakes up to the Brünig Pass. Then comes the descent to Meiringen, Brienz (on the same-named lake) and Interlaken. Here you change trains to continue along Lake Thun and past the picturesque wooden houses of the Simme Valley to Zweisimmen. From here, the Golden Pass Panoramic heads for glamorous Gstaad. Along the way Rossinière is renowned for its Grand Chalet (dating from the 18th century and the largest inhabitable wooden house in Switzer-land). Passengers’ first glimpse of Lake Geneva comes as the train winds its way through vineyards to your day’s destination, Montreux. Between Zweisimmen and Montreux you can also travel by the Gold-enPass Classic, a replica of the elegant Belle Epoque trains – and a must for nostalgia fans.

Panorama route 4 – from Lucerne to Lugano/Locarno. Wilhelm Tell Express
From Tell to Ticino. The Wilhelm Tell Express isn’t just another panoramic route. This is where boat and train team up to show you two of Switzerland’s most beautiful regions – Central Switzerland and Italian-speaking Ticino.
It’s difficult to say which part of the Wilhelm Tell Express route is more memorable. The three-hour cruise on Lake Lucerne? Or the train journey on the famous Gotthard route? What it lacks in speed, this “express” makes up for with the most varied travel experience imaginable. At Lucerne’s quayside, you board a historic steamer. In the distance, famous and familiar sights – to the left
Mount Rigi, straight ahead the Bürgenstock and Titlis, to the right the Pilatus. You glide past historic landmarks such as the Schiller Stone, Rütli
Meadow and Tell’s Chapel. And in
the elegant Belle Epoque floating restaurant, enjoy pleasures for the palate. At Flüelen, you change to a 1st class panorama car for the rail journey to Canton Ticino. The train winds its way from 470 to 1100 metres altitude, passing through the 15-kilometre Gotthard Tunnel (which dates from the 19th century and took 10 years to build at a cost of some 200 lives). The train re-emerges on the sun-kissed southern side of the Alps, and in the summer season an accom-panying guide provides interesting information on the Gotthard region.

Panorama route 5 – from St.Gallen to Lucerne. Pre-Alpine Express
The softer side of Switzerland. It needn’t always be towering peaks and deep rugged ravines. The Pre-Alpine Express introduces you to a Switzerland of gently undulating hills, picture-perfect villages and orchards.
This train is definitely not designed to take you from A to B via the quickest route. Climb aboard the Pre-Alpine Express from St.Gallen to Lucerne, and there’s one thing you’ll require in abundance – time. Because there’s so much to see. First there’s St.Gallen with its famous Abbey Library, one of the most ancient and impressive monastic libraries in the world. The route then crosses into neighbouring Canton Appenzell with its distinctive
landscape and impressive Alpstein massif. Rolling hills and pristine villages
pass by your panorama windows as the train winds its way through the
idyllic Toggenburg and the peaks of the Chur-firsten range come into view. In Rapperswil, the “City of Roses” at the eastern end of Lake Zurich, you pass the scenic See damm; and then the Rothenthurm upland moor before the Mythen cliffs (landmark of Canton Schwyz) come into view. When the Pre-Alpine Express passes Arth-Goldau and Lake Zug you’re nearing Lucerne, your journey’s end.

Panorama route 6 – from Lucerne to Brig. RegioExpress Lucerne–Bern and Lötschberger
Delightful detours. The most direct routes may be the quickest. But not always the most scenic. The RegioExpress trains of the BLS go to great lengths to make detours – rewarding passengers with spectacular sights.
Straight lines are simply not an option on the excursion routes of the BLS. So many winding ways invite you to ex-plore the wealth of historic and scenic sights. Only a quarter of an hour after leaving Lucerne you reach the former Franciscan monastery of Werthenstein, for centuries a popular place of pilgrim-age. Another attraction is the Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve, since 2001 a UNESCO World Heritage site with its untouched moorlands, sparkling streams and unique flora and fauna. Your journey continues to the cheese-making region of the Emmental, famous also for its traditional farmhouses. From Canton Bern, the train crosses into Canton Valais – but avoiding the time-saving Lötschberg Base Tunnel to take instead the classic century old moun-tain route to Brig. Numerous hiking and excursion opportunities present themselves along the way, spectacular sights including the Kander viaduct. And before reaching Brig take time after Hohtenn to admire the breathtaking views of the Rhone Valley.

Panorama route 7 – from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch. Jungfrau Railway
To the top of Europe. An excursion up to the Jungfraujoch is the highlight of any vacation visit to Switzerland. Stand on the “Top of Europe” – and the world of the Alps is at your feet.
You can’t help sensing a certain spirit of adventure and exploration when you reach the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. Climbing skills, strength and stamina are of course needed to con-quer the Jungfraujoch on foot. But you can leave all that to the professionals – and let the train take the strain instead. Departing from Interlaken Ost, your destination is the highest-altitude station in Europe. When changing trains at the Kleine Scheidegg, the views of the notorious Eiger North Face, the Mönch and Jungfrau are simply stun-ning. Once on the “Top of Europe” at 3454 metres, heaven is almost within reach. A wonderworld of sparkling snow and ice extends as far as the eye can see (including the mighty Aletsch Glacier, at 23 kilometres the longest in the Alps and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site). You can even go inside the mountain, and tour the “Alpine Sensation” exhibition tracing the fascinating 100-year history of the Jungfrau Railway.

Panorama route 8 – from Geneva to Locarno. Lavaux–Simplon–Centovalli Line
Switzerland – wine land. Take the train from Geneva to Locarno, and you’ll discover the Lavaux vineyards, a divinely beautiful land-scape between Lausanne and Montreux. And a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007.
via Lausanne (home of the Olympic Museum), Montreux (famous for its annual International jazz festival), Martigny (gateway to the Great St. Ber-nard Pass) and Brig (with its splendid 17th century Stockalper Palace). The route then passes through the Simplon Tunnel linking Switzerland with Italy. From Domodossola the narrow gauge Centovalli Line brings passengers back across the Swiss border, passing chestnut woods, deep ravines and the Merlot del Ticino vineyards along its winding way.
“Wine is bottled poetry,” wrote the 19th century Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson who (although completing his “Treasure Island” while staying in Switzerland) never saw the shores of Lake Geneva. Had he done so he would have dis-covered that wine is poetry while still growing as grapes on the vine, even before the bottling process. Between Nyon and Morges the lakeside vineyards of La Côte take pride of place, followed from Lausanne to Montreux by the largest wine-growing region in Switzerland – the Lavaux. Many a traveller is tempted to take a leisurely tasting tour through the vineyards and medieval towns with their welcoming wine cellars. The train continues

Panorama route 9 – from Basel to Geneva. South Jura Line
These towns make Switzerland tick. The South Jura Line links not only two of Switzerland’s largest cities, but also the German and French-speaking parts of the country. And in between – lovely lakeland and the hills of the gentle Jura.

The train trip from Basel to Geneva cannot claim to be one of Switzerland’s great classic rail journeys. But between the River Rhine and Lake Geneva many scenic surprises await the traveller. From Basel the train first reaches the tiny town of Duggingen and ancient Angenstein Castle, then continuing through the Laufental valley region with its limestone rocks and ravines. Your route continues through lovely land-scape along the southern rim of the Jura mountain range, with the towns of Morges, Yverdon-les-Bains and Neuchâtel, strung like sparkling pearls along the way. A further scenic highlight is the landscape around the Three Lakes Region of Biel, Murten and Neuchâtel. On hillsides you may see herds of Freibergers, the only Swiss breed of horses. And of particular inter-est to admirers of Swiss watches – Biel, Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds, the country’s most important watch-making centres.

UNESCO World Heritage Switzerland.Switzerland is a land of great diversity. One only has to look at its remarkable range of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, totalling no fewer than 11 natural and cultural attractions. And best of all – they are all so easily accessible by public transport.
Old City of BernBern never fails to fascinate visitors with its easy-going old world charm. Founded in 1191, the city’s medieval townscape is one of the finest in Europe. Attractions include sculpted Renaissance fountains, Switzerland’s largest cathedral and six kilometres of covered arcades.
Three castles of BellinzonaBellinzona’s impressive castles are among Switzerland’s best surviving examples of medieval military fortification. Rebuilt several times over the centuries, the fortresses of the Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro have during recent years been restored to their full glory.
UNESCO World Heritage site – the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch
Benedictine Convent of St John, MüstairFounded as a monastery in the 8th century, this complex comprises architectural styles and artistic treasures dating back more than 1200 years – to the delight of archaeologists and art historians. The convent is home to a community of nuns dedicated to the Benedictine ideals of worship and work.

La Chaux-de-Fonds / Le LocleLa Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle are two of Switzerland’s most important watchmaking centres – and also examples of innovative town planning. Watchmaking grew from a traditional craft into a booming industry, integrated into the development of the urban townscape.
Lavaux, Vineyard TerracesThe Lavaux Vineyards enjoy great scenic splendour, with views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. This is one of Switzerland’s largest wine-growing areas (2050 acres) – nourished by the triple effect of solar rays: direct sunlight, the sun reflected by the lake and the warmth stored in the terraced walls.
Monte San GiorgioA treasure trove of perfectly preserved fossilised fish and sea reptiles, dating back 240 million years when the site was a marine lagoon. In its place rose this mountain – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by Switzerland and Italy. A top attraction is the new fossil museum in Meride.
Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps“Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” total 111 properties in six countries (56 in Switzerland). Findings of organic materials such as wood, textiles, plant remains and bones give a fascinat-ing insight into life between 5000 and 500 BC.
Rhaetian Railway Albula/BerninaThe Albula/Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway is one of the most spectacular in the world. It combines breathtakingly beautiful Alpine land-scape with a route which winds its way through twisting tunnels and over towering viaducts – a legendary feat of remarkable railway engineering.
Swiss Alps Jungfrau-AletschThe Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch is one of the world’s most stunning high mountain landscapes. The region covers a vast and varied range of habitats, harmoniously ranging from Mediterra-nean-style steppe to glacial terrain and snow-capped Alpine peaks.
Swiss Tectonic Arena SardonaThis site offers a unique insight into the formation of mountains and valleys. Over millions of years the continental collision between Africa and Europe caused massive rock layers to fracture and fold over each other. The region reveals the extent of this phenomenon.
Convent of St.GallenThe Abbey of St.Gallen, its beautiful library and Baroque cathedral together form a unique ensemble. The Abbey Library comprises the finest secular Rococo interior in Switzerland. Known as the “Pharmacy of the Soul”, it houses 170,000 precious books and 2000 medieval manuscripts.
