SUPER EDITING CHECKLIST

THEME: EDUCATION


STEP 1: Cut out and give each student a strip to correct everything they can find on it.

Elicit participation by asking them to find at least 5 errors to correct, and when

theyve found them, to find another 5. Then get them to compare their

corrections with a partner.

Find and correct as many mistakes as you can in the following:

STEP 2: Copy the words on the slip on the board and correct them as follows:

Since landing at New Yorks JFK Airport last April, Thambi has

been attending Manhattan High School, which is in his

neighborhood. In Grade 5, he won a chess competition. His

parents and community are very proud of him.

Label the kinds of mistakes using the Super Editing Checklist (below).

STEP 3: Hand out the following Super Editing Checklist and remind them of the

mistakes theyve learned to correct. Then get them to do the corrections

according to the numbered mistake, e.g. under 1. Prepositions, theyre to

correct for prepositions but not for spelling or SVA.

STEP 4: As they complete their work, those who finish first should sit together to

check their work. As others finish, theyre to look for partners for mutual

checking.

STEP 5: When everyones had the opportunity to check and recheck, the teacher will

go over the correct answers on the board. The students will keep their

checklists permanently and use them for checking their own writing or for

mutual checking.


THE SUPER EDITING WORKSHEET

Check for the following:

1. PREP (Preposition)

Youll need a pen for write, a notebook to write, a pair sneakers to go school in, a pair of

glasses to see at, and a cellphone for in emergencies.

2. SVA (Subject-Verb Agreement)

Rewritten: Trigonometry was my most difficult subject in school, working out angles and

measurements to calculate various lengths and heights, whereas physics, chemistry, biology,

physical education, history, and geography were a real piece of cake. (And, which occurs

twice, is the only word correctly spelled.)
