Visiting an old friend……

I was back in a former parish recently and with some time to

spare I decided to call on a family who had been very supportive

during my time there. I was welcomed warmly by the man of

the house who was delighted to see me and he brought me

straight in to the living room where his wife of fifty-four years of

marriage was watching TV. I greeted her but got no response.

Her husband said “She doesn’t know anyone now father, in fact

she doesn’t utter a word.”

Joan (not her real name) was diagnosed three years ago with

dementia. Until that time she was an active woman, a mother of

five grown children and proud grandmother of 13. She was a warm and vivacious personality in whose home every caller was sat down to a feast of home baking, she was active in the parish community serving in the

Society of St. Vincent DePaul for many years, a popular and much-loved figure.

I tried to connect with her that day but no amount of coaxing brought the slightest response. Her husband has

recently made the decision to allow her to go to a nursing home as his health is straining under the burden of

her care, and while he hates the thought he knows in his heart that it is the best thing for her. I came away sad

that day, but glad to have seen such love in action.

Dementia is a cruel disease, someone we know and love gradually disappears before our very eyes and while

there in body is not really present in any meaningful way. It must be one of the most difficult illnesses for a

family to be faced with, hard to make any sense of for all involved.

God in Jesus has identified himself with every human person who suffers, in fact you could go so far as to

say that Christian faith doesn’t mean much to those without an experience of suffering in some way shape or

form. Suffering is the starting point, it’s what makes prayer and relationship with God important. We never

suffer alone, we are aligned with God, the God who chose to stand in solidarity with all the broken.

Suffering is inescapable, but suffering never has the last word; life and love have the last word. At every

celebration of the Mass we walk with Jesus through his cycle of suffering, sacrifice and death to newness of

Risen life in God. We experience in every Mass the fulfilment of God’s promise of redemption. For that

reason the life of prayer and the Sacraments can be for the dementia sufferer and caregiver a lifeline of hope.

In the Eucharist Jesus comes to be present to us and in the end that is the most valuable gift we can give to

one another – presence. We don’t need hi tech skills or gadgets just the ability to be welcoming and listening,

to sing songs and clap hands to have a childlike willingness to be there totally for another.

Dear Editor,

I live in Weston Park here in Lucan and to access

the 66 bus I must cross behind a roundabout

which is so overgrown that motorists cannot see

me until seconds before impact.

Having established that Transport Infrastructure

Ireland (TII) are responsible, I have made contact

and TII confirmed their role. I sent them photos.

TII sent out a consultant, time elapsed. I contacted

TII again and they told me that someone would

take action as soon as possible and gave me that

company's name and details.

Time has elapsed. Mornings are getting darker. A

schoolboy trying to cross at same time as my

husband prompted him to send me a video of the

death trap. I advised TII again. Nothing. Last

Tuesday evening I went out and cut and pruned a

little. Still nothing. On Saturday three of us from

Weston Park cut back more. It’s not a permanent

solution but it gives us a sporting chance crossing

the road.

There is something very wrong.

Yours sincerely,

Caitríona McClean

In Grateful Appreciation

STAFFORD (IRENE) The Stafford family would like to thank family,

friends, neighbours, carers and medical staff

for their support on the recent loss of their Mam,

Irene. Sadly missed.

We are continuing with the wiring

of our upper floor/ kitchen area

and we can make our own tea and

coffee. We have just about

completed a comfortable space

where members can socialise.

I mentioned last week that we have purchased

board games, including Scrabble, Chess and

Draughts, for use by all members. Did you know

that there are many variants to draughts? Want to

find out more? Call to us and all will be revealed.

Also as part 2 of the shed re-wiring job we are

wiring the ground floor for workshop equipment.

We are reviewing our Constitution at present,

seeking to amend and improve it to better reflect our members’ needs and wishes. We will

distribute the current Constitution, by email to

members for whom we have e-mail addresses,

two weeks before the AGM. Any proposed

amendments must be received at our e-mail

address, [email protected], no later

than three days before our AGM. If you are a

fully paid up member and you do not receive an

Email with a copy of the Constitution attached,

please reconfirm your e-mail address to us at our

Gmail address. Proposed amendments or

additions to our Constitution will be presented and discussed at our AGM. It may be necessary to

hold an EGM at a later date to amend our

Constitution.

We learned this week that we were successful in our application for a grant, from SDCC, LCDC,

Community Enhancement Programme Mens’

Shed Funding 2019, to provide a water supply

and drainage for our kitchen area.

We still urgently need 1-2 additional committee

members as we anticipate that some current

committee members will be seeking a changed

role. Why not you…?

Our 2019 AGM will be held on Wednesday 9th

October 2019, 18.30 to 19.50 in Lucan Library.

Attendance at this meeting is strictly limited to

paid-up members. We are open Mon. - Friday,

10am to 2pm and are contactable at our shed, at

the rear of the IWA premises or online

acclaimed One-Act Plays. Shakespeare’s A Dick by Mark Kenneally,

Directed by Janet Mc Kennedy.

A Little Box of Oblivion by Stephen Bean,

Directed by Carol Ryan.

Venue: Lucan Spa Hotel. Time: 8.30pm

These are two innovative, modern comedies that

will have you laughing all the way home.

In Shakespeare is a Dick, Wally is cursed by

Shakespeare to speak only in Shakespearean

verse. This has hilarious consequences.

In A Little Box of Oblivion, a woman leaves a box on a park bench in the care of Cool Guy and a

series of characters try to guess what’s in the box.

Imagination runs riot in a wonderfully amusing

and highly entertaining piece of theatre.

Esker Active Retirement Association Hi All, We’ve been back at the club for two weeks now

and it’s so good to be around such lovely happy

people, sharing stories of our summer and getting

back into our activities once more. Last week we

had our soccer coach Stephen back with us, he

took it easy with the warm-up and then got us

started on our walking football game. Such fun, I

was very happy as I scored two goals and our

team won 3 – 2. We had all our usual activities

afterwards, scrabble, indoor bowling and cards.

Today we had the lovely Marguerita, our dancing

teacher, back again. I had forgotten just how good it makes you feel when you dance! We did

a foxtrot, a slow waltz, some line dancing and the

slush. Such fun and we didn’t even realise we

were exercising at the same time. We have to

practice our dancing now for our next trip away in

October when we go to Kenmare for a few days.

We’ve got so many going on this trip, we need

two coaches!! At this stage, everyone should

have their deposit paid to Hilda and the balance

monies should be paid to Select Hotels in Cork.

Details of the phone number to call and address if sending cheques, are on our Whatsapp group text.

Any queries, please contact Hilda.

More new members have started with us and are

settling in well. If anyone wants to join our club,

either give me a call on the number below or call

in any Wednesday to St Andrew’s Church Hall,

we start at 1.30pm until 4pm. We’ll have the

usual activities but I’m also trying to organise

something new before the end of the year.

The evenings are drawing in, winter will soon be

here so please don’t sit home alone, come on down to our club and make new friends. We’re a

very friendly bunch so you’ll soon feel at home

here.

Till next time,

Lucan ICA Tues 1st Oct: Craft group meet as usual 10m to 12.30pm.

We send get well wishes to any of our members

who are not well at the moment.

Farewell to Fr. Joseph Hao

Parishioners at St. Patrick’s will be sad to see Fr. Joseph

leave the parish, returning to

his native China.

We wish him every blessing

in the future!

What about the Boys in

Green last Saturday! We’ll all be

up early to see them take on Japan

this Saturday. It will be another

bruising encounter but hopefully we’ll (us sitting in our armchairs),

will come out on the right side!

Celebrating the Boys and Girls in Blue this

Sunday! If you were one of the

lucky ones to get a ticket, it’s a

great opportunity to celebrate

such great feats. Long live the

Dubs!

Birdie noticed that the old main gates from the

newer cemetery in Esker have been taken away – perhaps for restoration!

Scam Phone Calls! We’ve heard

of a couple of incidents with

people receiving calls from

numbers claiming to be a bank or

broadband provider. While it is an

old trick, it seems to be more prevalent in the past

week or so.

Don’t answer any numbers you don’t

recognise. If concerned, ring your bank or broadband provider, and you can always report

such calls to the Gárdaí.

In some cases, the phone company notifies the

incoming call as Possible Fraud, which is very

helpful!

Quite a few Bangers around the place these

evenings! We’ve heard reports of kids throwing

them a people and cars. Surely this cannot be

classed as fun! Very worrying for the future if this

behaviour continues.

Take care out there!

NEWS

St Joseph’s College Debs Night: Our recent graduates

looked fabulously glamorous last Wednesday

(18th Sep) at their Debs Ball and the night went

very well indeed! A big thank you to the staff of

Dunboyne Castle Hotel for their excellent hospitality and for the delicious meal which they

served on the night. A special word of thanks to

Ms Meade for organising the glittering event and

to the girls' year head Ms Byrne and all of their

tutors and teachers who attended the event. It was

lovely to have an opportunity to chat to the girls

and to hear all about the career and life paths that

they are now pursuing. We thank the girls for

their time in St Joseph’s and we wish them all,

success and happiness for the future!

Some of our graduates at their Debs Ball

Our new students celebrated a special First Year

Mass in St Mary’s Church on Wednesday. It was

a lovely ceremony to start their journey in St

Joseph’s. We would like to thank Fr Tom

Kennedy for celebrating the mass, Ms Mellet for

arranging the beautiful music, Year Head Ms

Byrne and all of the singers, readers and

participants.

The Language Hub has commenced again on

Wednesdays in the Language Lab at lunchtime.

All students from all year groups are welcome to

come along to practice and improve their Spanish, French, German, Italian or Irish. Students can also

play language games on the computer to help with

vocabulary. Thank you to Ms Walsh for

facilitating this great resource!

Well done to our Junior Camogie Team who

had a brilliant victory in their first game of the season, against Maryfield College. Final score 12-

10 to 1-2. Well done to everybody involved!

An afterschool Badminton Club has commenced

on Tuesdays at 4pm in the sports hall with

Ms.Keena and Ms.Walsh. This club is suitable

for all ability levels from absolute beginners to

advanced levels and is a great way to make new

friends whilst learning a new sport.

On Monday we welcomed first year parents to the

First year parents Information Evening. It was

great to see such a good turn-out. Thank you to all

Our TY parents’ Information Evening took

place on Tuesday. It was lovely to have an

opportunity to speak to parents and we would like

to thank everyone who attended.

The staffroom of St. Joseph's College hosted the

Bewley's Hospice Coffee Morning this week.

The coffee morning featured the added element of

a Bake Off. Sixteen staff members participated with other teachers bringing along their baked

produce. The display was such that Mary Berry

herself would have been amazed. Delicious treats

were served with the coffee resulting in over €350

collected for Hospice services. Thanks to those

who baked, judged, organised and especially

those who contributed.

Green School Seminars: Mr O’Connor and Mr.

Walsh organised a series of Green School

Seminars last Friday to raise awareness of

correctly using the bins in our school in our

campaign to achieve the Green flag for litter and

waste. All year groups except 6th years attended. It was held on the same day as the Climate Strike

so that students might be encouraged to remain in

school for the presentation. Our presentation

involved giving the background to why the

Climate Strikes were taking place on a global

level and then discussing what our own Green

School committee have been doing over the last 2

years. Councillor Paul Gogarty was invited to

attend and speak as he has links with the Green

Party. He spoke very passionately about his

personal experience and we are grateful to him for

taking time out to visit our school. The girls on our Green School Committee provided a bin

demonstration before asking students to try and

win a prize (bamboo toothbrush) by correctly

using the bins. The theme of each seminar was

that small changes can make big differences!

This year’s Parents’ Association AGM will be

on Wednesday 2nd October at 8pm. All parents

are encouraged to attend.

currently in 5th class, who may want to attend

Adamstown in September 2021, to visit the

school. This is a great opportunity for both

parents and students to meet the management and

teaching staff and to see everything the school has

to offer. Management will be visiting the local

primary school in the next number of weeks with

more information.

1st Year Trip: The first year students went on a

class bonding trip to Court Lough Adventure Playground in Balbriggan. The students got to try

archery, wall climbing and zip lining. A great day

was had by the students. Thank you to the tutors,

Ms Corrigan, Ms Tandy, Ms Tarpey, Ms

McKenna, Mr. Smith and Mr Dennehy, Marie and

Kevin the SNA’s and the TY mentors for all their

assistance in making such an enjoyable trip for

the first years.

Ploughing Championships: The 5th and 6th year

Agricultural Science students attended this year’s

Ploughing Championships in Feenagh, Co. Carlow. They visited an RTE live broadcast of the

weather, had a look at the latest farming

machinery and learned how anaerobic digesters

can work. Bringing the farm to Adamstown. The

students enjoyed the day and learned a lot from

the trip.

Transition Year Trip: This week the transition

year student’s went on a two night trip to Carlingford. The students had a jam packed

schedule with activities including crab fishing,

kayaking, pier jumping and laser combat. They

also took part in a team building exercise called

nighline. This involved students being blind

folded. They then had to work together to move

from one location to another. It was a very

successful and enjoyable trip. A big thank you to

Miss Harkin, Miss Doherty, Mr Gavin and Mr

Smith who accompanied the students to

Carlingford.

Lucan Community College

Lucan CC Girls basketball bounce back: Our

Girls Basketball Teams are back up and running

again this year after last season’s successful

Dublin final championship win. The Under 16

and Under 19 teams started the new season this

week against the Teresian School. Training for all

is on Monday at 4.15pm in the gym and new

players are welcome.

Lucan CC Boys Senior Hurlers held in

dramatic draw: Our Senior Hurling Boys took to

the turf for their first match this season in

Portmarnock. The team played magnificently in a

tricky away game. However the home side fought

back in the second half to reel Lucan CC in and

the game ended ina draw. Thank you Mr

Morrisey and Mr Foley for their coaching so far

this year.

Sport Against Racism in Lucan CC: Lucan

CC’s PE department and Wellbeing team

highlighted the importance of eliminating racism

from sport through a series of practical workshop sporting events. The Sports Against Racism

Ireland (SARI) team joined forces with the

college to deliver a hands-on, action packed

workshop where students gained insights into the

effects of racism and tools to eliminate racism

from all sports. Thank you to SARI, Ms Ryan and

our PE teachers who facilitated such an enjoyable

event for our students.

Coláiste Phádraig CBS Open Night 2018: A final reminder that the Coláiste Phádraig Open Night will be held in

the school next Thursday 3rd Oct from 7-9pm.

All students from 4th/5th and 6th classes in the

surrounding areas are invited to attend.

Application forms for new 1st year enrolments for

2021 are now available from the school office.

Careers: All 6th yr students attended the Higher

Options Day at the RDS lass Thursday. This

popular event has become an annual fixture on the

Education calendar of most secondary schools as

over 180 colleges, universities and institutes of

further education, from home and abroad, set up

stalls to inform and attract students. Over the course of their visit our students got to attend

lectures and talks about a wide variety of careers

ranging from Engineering, Teaching, Nursing,

Agriculture, Science and Design and many, many

others. There were talks on the CAO system,

Apprenticeships and studying abroad and the

students definitely found the whole experience

informative and helpful, as they prepare to make

important career choices over the coming months

and years. The students also took the opportunity

to dine Alfresco in the food court yard and relax

in the beautiful Autumnal sunshine.

Table Quiz: The Coláiste Phádraig Parents

Association are holding a fundraising Table Quiz in Kenny’s, Lucan on Friday 18th October

starting at 8pm. A team of 4 costs 40e and all

funds raised will go towards the cost of installing

a library and a 2nd Classroom of the Future in the

school. We encourage everyone to support this

important fundraising initiative for the school.

Zambia: The Zambia 2020 Immersion Group

have been active this term fundraising for next

summer’s trip. A Lucky First Goal competition

for the All Ireland Final replay saw the winning

time of 35.10 mins. The 1st prize is 150e and the

winner has 30 days to claim the prize. The group

have also restarted the Ice-Cream sale at lunchtime in the canteen every Friday. The good

weather was ideal last week to launch the

initiative once again and numerous delicious ice-

creams such as cornettos, magnums and choc-ices

went down a treat with the students (and

teachers!). This initiative will continue throughout

the year.

Golf: Our golfers had their 1st outing of the new

season as they took part in the Irish Schools

Senior Championship on Friday 20th September in

Forrest Little Golf Club. The school had 3

students participating, Seán Quiqley, Ciarán O’

Brien and Colm Walsh. All three had decent

rounds with some birdies and solid pars on the

tough parkland golf course. The course provided numerous challenges for our golfers, including

water hazards, strategically placed bunkers and

penal rough but they all had some moments of

quality and composure throughout the 18 holes,

mixed with some wayward drives and loose putts.

Although they failed to qualify for the next round,

the students enjoyed the event and hopefully the

experience will serve them well in future

competitions.

The Leinster Inter Schools League Match Play

draw was made recently and Coláiste Phádraig

will have been drawn in group F alongside

Ashbourne CS, St. Vincent’s College Castleknock and CUS Dublin. There are 16 groups in total

with only the group winner advancing to the

knockout stages. The three group matches will be

played over the next few months and hopefully

our golfers can all bring their A game and

progress to the next round of the competition at

least.

Study Skills: A number of study skills seminars

were held in the school this week for our 6th yr

students. Mr. Fox and Ms. Hunt had arranged

speakers to come in from Student Enrichment

Services and run workshops for our exam

students. The feedback was very positive

afterwards and the students picked up some important study tips that will hopefully be put into

practice over the coming months. A similar

workshop will be held for parents in the school on

Tuesday 22nd Oct at 7:30 with the focus being on

how to help the students develop effective study

habits. Parents of students from all year groups

are invited to attend.

Soccer: 1st yr trials began last week in the school

with huge numbers in attendance, all eager to

claim a coveted spot on the final panel of 22

players that will be selected in 4 weeks’ time. The

panel will then begin full training for the League

and Cup campaigns that begin for 1st yrs in November. Our u15s begin their League and Cup

campaigns in October while our u17 team also

begin their campaigns in the coming weeks. After

last year’s u17 Leinster Cup and All Ireland

success, this year’s panel will be somewhat

different as numerous key players are no longer

eligible but the new group are still optimistic of a

competitive season. Hopefully our teams will all

enjoy some success throughout the season and

maybe the school can claim some silverware

along the way. Since 2007, Coláiste Phádraig have reached 26 major soccer finals and have won

17 titles (Dublin, Leinster and All Ireland) in that

time, (more than any other school in Leinster).

Meet Helena Duggan, author of A Place Called

Perfect and The Trouble with Perfect

Tuesday 22nd October, 10.00am – 10.45am

Helena Duggan is from Kilkenny, a famous

medieval (and haunted!) city which was the inspiration for the eponymous town in A Place

Called Perfect.

She writes stories full of quirky, creepy and

unforgettable adventures. She's also a graphic

designer and illustrator.

Helena was inspired to write the A Place Called

Perfect series after coming across an unusual pair

of antique glasses in Australia and imagining the

story behind them. Perfect is a mysterious town

where everyone must wear glasses to stop them

going blind. But as strange things keep happening and adults disappear, are the glasses stopping

people from seeing the truth of the town?

John Curran T.D. – Fianna Fáil Email: [email protected] Phone: 01 6183792.

School Building Projects: I am calling on the

Education Minister to set out a timeline for the

school building projects that have already been

approved and yet are stuck at a design and

planning stage for far too long. These include:

Lucan Community College, Griffeen Community

College, Divine Mercy Senior and Junior NS and

St. Joseph’s College. I am calling for an

emergency school building plan, to be

implemented and for the Department to meet

every school that is experiencing longer than normal delays in order to communicate what is

happening and when they will start to be built.

Teen Spaces: SDCC are set to roll out the

installation of 5 Teen Spaces across the county in

2019. The spaces will include Wi-Fi & Griffeen

Park is set to benefit from €120,000. The site is

on the Esker side and will include a tea

shop/coffee-pod type facility with seating and

toilet facilities.

Cllr. Paul Gogarty – Independent and Green. Tel: 087-2752489. Email: [email protected]

I applaud the actions by young people to protest

against inaction on climate change when we have only a narrow window to prevent temperatures

rising beyond two degrees, hopefully preventing a

domino effect that will make the crisis far worse.

Politicians have collectively failed to show

leadership and that this has spurred our children

to take direct action. I was delighted to contribute to a discussion in St Joseph’s College last Friday

about what can be done on an individual basis. I

urge everyone to continue educating themselves

about climate change to refute the myths and

conspiracy theories and to get involved in any

meaningful way they can. Eat less meat and dairy.

Protect biodiversity. Reduce consumption, re-use

and recycle (as the final option). Lobby

supermarkets and businesses. Make

environmentally-conscious consumer choices.

More tips available at bit.ly/pgclink .

Overgrowth: Now that we are in hedge cutting

season, I have asked the Council to cut back

overgrowth in and near various estates, including

Colthurst, Abbeywood, Foxford, Glenvale and

Foxborough.

Bus Connects and Public Transport: I am

currently reviewing the revised set of proposals

for the Lucan Core Bus Corridor. I was encouraged to see clear intention from the NTA to

engage with South Dublin County Council on the

N4/Kennelsfort Road interchange which will

improve the effectiveness of this route (something

which has been pursued by my colleague John

Curran TD).

Biodiversity in Lucan: In response to interest

expressed by residents’ associations in supporting

biodiversity, I have a motion down for this

week’s Lucan Palmerstown Fonthill Area

Committee meeting asking the Council to work with residents to identify appropriate biodiversity

areas around Lucan, Palmerstown and North

Clondalkin.

School Secretaries Work To Rule: Last week

almost 3500 school secretaries across the state

staged a one hour stoppage to highlight the

discriminatory pay scales they have endured for

past forty years. 90% of school are not employed

by the Dept. of Education but by boards of management of their corresponding school. This

has led to the vast majority of school secretaries

on low pay, no sick pay, no holiday pay and

having to sign on in the summer months. There

was great support for the secretaries by teachers,

parents and of course pupils. School Secretaries

deserve our support and they deserve pay parity

with their colleagues.

Transport Users I checked out a very common complaint I

received about the bus service to Lucan at

evening peak, users being left on the Quays and at

Heuston with several buses passing full. I found

out this to be true and is very frustrating after a

full day at work. On one occasion three buses

passed full and on the second four buses passed.

This problem has become greater after the

summer holidays. The problem is buses get

delayed before they reach O Connell Bridge and

the longer the delay more users accumulate at the city centre stop and many consecutive buses leave

the city centre full passing users on the way. To

avoid this problem many users coming in on the

Tallaght Luas now come into the centre to catch

their bus. Many users in the Grafton St. area make

their way back to Merrion Sq. in order to get a

seat. These problems must be addressed by the

NTA before they move on to other fairy tale

projects. T. Newton 086 3127364

Well done the Jnr B hurlers, who threw the

kitchen sink at a very fancied NaFianna team and snatched the win right at the death, only taking

the lead for the first time in the 60th minute,

great composure shown in the end, and another

promotion secured and a county final to look

forward to on Saturday 5th October 2:30pm in

O’Toole Park. Well done to PJ, Paul, Christy and

Kevin and the team looked very well in the tops

kindly sponsored by Kevin O’Toole. Well done

also to both Minor football teams who recorded

good away wins to get their Championships back

on track, Minor A football now have a winner

takes all games at home vs Ballymun Sunday 6th October on the same day Minor B should get out

of the group with a win vs Peregrines, also a

home game. There was plenty of disappointment

as well with the Senior hurler’s rueing a slow start

and missed chances, losing out by 4pts to Craobh

Chiaráin in the County quarter final. Also our

Senior Camogie team suffered the narrowest of

losses to Ballyboden away, 1-11 to 1-10 on

Sunday last, they will be looking to bounce

straight back this weekend when they take on

Skerries Harps away at 10am Sunday morning the 29th September. The Inter and Jnr 3 Camogie also

suffered defeats, however Jnr 4 bucked the trend

with a good win. Our Minor LF once again drew

in a high scoring game, and will now have to

watch other results to see have they done enough

to secure a Championship semi-final spot. The

Inter Ladies put in a battling performance on

Wednesday night in the Shield semi-final but

came up short away to Clann Mhuire. On

Saturday our Senior footballers will be looking to

ensure progress to the County quarter-finals as

they take on Clontarf in O’Toole Park 3:15pm Saturday 28th September. Then on Sunday both

Junior football teams have winner takes all games

as they both look to get out of the respective

Championship groups. A away to Vincent’s 11am

and B away to Fingallians 3pm.

Our deepest sympathies to the Boyle/O’Neill

family on the recent loss of Maura. RIP
