Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
H ark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King,
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconcile.
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
join the triumph of the skies;
with the angelic host proclaim,
‘Christ is born in Bethlehem’
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.
Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
late in time behold him come,
offspring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
hail, the incarnate deity,
pleased as Man with to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.
Hail, the heaven-born Prince of peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
born that man no more may die,
born to raise the suns of earth,
born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.

O Come All Ye Faithful(Adeste Fideles)
This carol is sometimes attributed to John Wade, a British exile living in France.
Otherwise, it is considered to be an anonymous Latin Hymn. Around 1751, Wade
put the text with music, probably by John Reading (English). In 1853, the familiar
translation first appeared, attributed to the Rev. Frederick Oakley.

Silent Night
S ilent night! holy night! All is calm, all is brightround yon virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace!
Silent night! holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight;glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,Christ, the Saviour, is born!
Silent night! holy night!Son of God, love’s pure lightradiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace,Jesus, Lord at they birth.
Silent NightSilent Night was written on Christmas Eve in 1818 in Oberndorf, Austria. One common story of this carol was that the organ at St. Nicholas
Church was broken, and the repairman could not get there in time to fix it, but recent research has found no evidence in the church
records or elsewhere to back this up. Joseh Mohr, the assistant pastor of the church, had written a poem, “Stille Nacht” in 1816. On Dec. 24, 1818, he gave the poem to his friend,
the church organist, Franz Gruber. Gruber immediately composed the melody and
arranged it for two voices, choir and guitar in time to be performed that night at Midnight
Mass. By 1955, “Silent Night” had become the most recorded song of all time.

Away in a Manger
The first two verses of “Away
in a Manger” were originally
published in a Lutheran Sunday
school book in 1885. Two years
later, James R. Murray published
it as “Luther’s Cradle Hymn,” thus
creating the misconception that
Luther had written it. Although
some attribute the words to
Luther, they are usually considered
American anonymous. Some
credit the music to Murray; others
think he merely harmonized an old
German folk song. The words are
frequently sung to the tune of
the Scottish song,
“Flow Gently Sweet Afton.”

Frequently thought to be much older than it
is, the words and music for this American carol
were written in 1857 by John Henry Hopkins
as part of a Christmas pageant for the General
Theological Seminary in New York City.
4. All ye, beneath life’s crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow,
Look, now! for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing:
O rest beside the weary road,
And hear the angels sing!
5. For lo! the days are hast’ning on,
By prophet bards foretold,
When with the ever-circling years
Comes round the age of gold;
When peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient splendors fling,
And the whole world give back the song
Which now the angels sing!
It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

Ho!Ho!
Ho!
O Little Town of BethlehemO little town of Bethlehem,How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleepThe silent stars go by;
Yet in the dark streets shinethThe everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the yearsAre met in thee tonight.
2. For Christ is born of Mary,And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keepTheir watch of wond’ring love.
O morning stars, togetherProclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,And peace to men on earth!
3. How silently, how silentlyThe wondrous gift is giv’n!
So God imparts to human heartsThe blessings of His heav’n.No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,Where meek souls will receive Him, still,
The dear Christ enters in. 4. O holy Child of Bethlehem!
Descend to us, we pray;Cast out our sin, and enter in,
Be born in us today! We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Immanuel!
God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen
This 18th Century carol out of London, England, has an
oft-confused title. “God rest you merry, gentlemen”
is correct, not “God rest you, merry gentlemen.”
The verb “rest” is used here in the way now
most familiar from the phrase “rest assured.”

Joy to the worldIssac Watts (1674-1748) was evidently short and not very handsome. A
young lady (Elizabeth Singer) who had fallen in love with him from his writ-ings, asked him to marry her, but when she saw him in person she took back the offer. She wrote later that Issac Watts was “only five feet tall, with a shal-low face, hooked nose, prominant cheek bones, small eyes, and deathlike color.....I admired the jewel but not the casket” that contained the jewel.
Maybe, he wasn’t a looker, but Issac Watts could certainly write. Wanting to write songs based on the Psalms from a New Testament background, Issac Watts wrote Joy To The World from Psalm 98. (Ps 98:4 Make a joyful noice unto the Lord all the earth; make a loud noise and rejoice and sing praise....). Watts was not immediately appreciated. “How dare he take the pslams and try to improve them,” was the outcry.
Many years after Watts’ death, Dr. Lowell Mason (1792-1872) took the hymn and placed it to music based on The Messiah by Frederick Handel (1685-1759), a contemperary of Issac Watts. Lowell started composing music in my home state of Georgia where he lived and worked as a banker (Savannah, GA) from 1812 - 1827. When he tried to publish his first set of musical works, it was rejected.
Finally, the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, Massachusetts accepted it. Born in Massachusettes, in 1827 Lowell returned there from Georgia where he eventually became president over the society that finally pub-lished his works. He went on to a great music career, composing over 1600 sacred works, including “Antioch” in 1848 which now takes the title of Isaac Watt’s work, Joy To The World.
Joy To The World is now universally sung as one of the most joyous songs of Christmas. Watts’ poem,Joy To The World, has also been sung to John Wy-eth’s tune, “Nettleton”, to which is more commonly sung “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” However, Lowell’s tune remains the most popular.
