Quinsigamond Community College SUMMER 2015
Take an online course at QCCGeneral Information:Online classes are similar to face to face classes in the sense that there is a real instructor and fellow students involved in the learning process during the college term. Grades, lectures, due dates, assignments, group discussions, textbooks, tests, college credit, are all a part of online classes as well. The main differences are that the classroom is a web site that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and that lectures are most often read instead of listened to; discussions are typed instead of spoken. Courses have a weekly schedule so the student needs to logon to the online class several times a week to stay current. Discussions and communication with the instructor are conducted predominately in web-based message areas, chat rooms, e-mail, and online discussion groups.
Some classes may require students to logon and participate at specific times for some of the course work. For a small number of courses instructors may require on-campus or proctored mid-term and final exams. Computer Literacy, keyboarding skills, and internet connectivity are required. Check the Online Section Notes below listed along with each online course section for details. An online course list can also be found at www.QCC.edu , click Academics, then online degrees and courses to view the list of courses and sections.
Requirements:To take part in an online course you will need a computer with Internet access with the following minimum standards for technology. Some courses may require access to specific applications not listed below.

TYPES OF COURSE MODALITIES
Blended A Blended (also, hybrid) course has fewer in person course
meetings than a face-to-face course. A portion of the course is
delivered online and a portion is delivered on-site face-to-face.
Blended courses use the institution’s Learning Management
System for the online portion of the course.
OnlineAn online course is a course that is provided entirely through
the institution’s Learning Management System. No on-site
class meetings are required. Although it is preferred that all
assessments occur within an online course, a proctored in-person
exam may be required.
AcceleratedAn accelerated course runs in a compressed time and either
meets more often to ensure adequate contact time or utilizes
other proven accelerated learning methods to replicate the
required contact hours. Specialized accelerated learning cognitive
methods may also be used. An accelerated course may be offered
face-to-face, online or in a blended modality.
Emporium An emporium model course is a course that utilizes computer-
based learning versus a lecture approach, and is supported
by individualized instruction. It is delivered entirely onsite in
a computerized classroom and requires an additional weekly
meeting. Students may have the opportunity to complete more
than one course in a single semester and have their progress
carried over to the next semester.
The following types of course modalities are offered at Quinsigamond Community College:
